Title: How did you find Rootschat?
Post by: casalguidi on Tuesday 05 April 05 09:54 BST (UK)
I don't think I've seen this posted before so might it be interesting to know how we all found our way to Rootchat?

Me ...................... a fellow researcher sent me a link to a post which she thought may be of interest to me - little did she know what she was getting me into  ::)

For the life of me I can't remember.

I probably saw a reference to it on some other site, but as it was the first forum I joined,(since then ScotlandsPeople [now defunct] and GenesReunited [now less interesting]) I just don't know where.

But, as Graceland says:
Quote
it don,t really matter how we found it but its a great site  ;D

I'll drink to that !!   ;D ;D

On google search engine .
I can't remember what exactly I was searching for, whether a name of one of my rellies  or a general genealogy query I was looking for . I just stumbled across this site by  pure accident.  I'm hooked , it's the best for helpfullness and friendliness

I got in contact with a distant relative through a Mailing List last autumn and he recommended I look at Rootschat where he'd posted some info of a common ancestor - the rest, as they say, is history.  Been hanging around here ever since  ;D  ;D

I'm not really sure because I originally joined the site in January 2004.  But I think I was just Googling and found it by accident!!!  I didn't use it much in the early days, but from last September I've been hooked :D

One of the best "accidents" to happen to me ;D

Hi,

I found it by travelling along wee back roads and rough Irish country lanes. I came through many Irish townlands http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/ - 12k Irish Townland Search. I found 5 places starting with " Root ", three ending in " hat " threw in " sc " for super chat and arrived here . It has to be an Irish townland. I've never met so many people with the gift of the gab. Have all of yez kissed the Blarney Stone ?

I was bored and completely fed up.  I typed in a general search for genealogy in the hope that a site I hadn't seen before would pop up and answer all my questions.  Guess what?  It did ROOTSCHAT.

Funny, I don't seem to get bored or fed up anymore!

I think I saw it mentioned in a magazine article and being nosey, at a loose end and surrounded by family tree brick walls thought I'd have a look!

I'm still nosey....less often at a loose end...but have knocked down monumental brick walls all with the help of Rootschat!!

So if you don't mind, I'll keep coming back!  ;D

I happened to be talking to another researcher on MSN, and he mentioned that he had put a couple of posts up on rootschat, and as I'm curious by nature,I decided to check it out, it's now listed in my favourites, and its now become an addiction, that I can't afford not to have. Not only is it a great site,it saves my sanity, knowing that others can have the same problems and rewards, with the click of a mouse.

I was bored with my ancestors after the first week of ancestry.com and didn't have the gump to order certificates from the UK to further my research (wither) ... so, I looked on other genealogy message boards for someone that I might help.

Well, I found someone named Joe... and sent an email with some information.  It turned out that I didn't help Joe... Instead,  Joe helped me with a link to this site.

Now, I am never bored AND I have ordered many certificates! Thank you Joe!

I think it was through Google.  I was getting very frustrated with my HUGHES in Llandudno research (10% of the town has that name!) and I think it Googled it's way to me exactly 1 year and 15 days ago.

Some folks on the OU Family History group had mentioned it but not taken to it   :-\ but I hadn't got round to visiting.

I was on a message board on Genealogy.com, asking questions, and someone directed me to Rootschat, saying there were very kind people here who did lookups.

Well!  One of the best pieces of advice I've ever had.  I am constantly stunned by the kindness of strangers here.  Of course I don't think of them as strangers any more - they are part of my Rootschat family! ;D

I don't have access to censuses, etc, but I do try to help beginners with queries to which I know the answers, and have done some translation from French for a fellow Rootschatter.  But you have to be quick off the mark!  Many times I've logged on, seen a post and thought, "I can help", but someone has beaten me to it! :D  ;D

After we had been e mailing a little while he told me about this site.

I have had so much help on here over the past year or so with my Bedfordshire line I can't believe it.

It's a wonderful site. :) :) :)

I put a request for help on Channel 4 Teletext for my elusive grandmother Elizabeth Violet Everett.

One kind gentleman who answered my request did several lookups for me and after a few emails told me to have a look on the Rootschat site.
I had a look around for a couple of weeks, liked what I saw, then put my request into Beginners.

I often wonder who he is, as I only knew his Christian name, and if he recognises himself from the information I've given then..........a big thank you!

I still haven't found my grandmothers birth but have solved quite a few other problems to do with other branches of the families trees.

I have also learned that I'm not the only person who gets a buzz from finding out information for myself and others.............so much so that I have kicked the smoking habit after 50 years!!!

There's  not enough time to smoke and RootsChat!!! and the latter gives me a bigger buzz!!

Paul sent us a message on Genes Reunited about one of my wife's ancestors in relation to June 2005 RootsChat challenge.

I followed the link (and forgot to reply to his question - sorry Paul).  I gave it a go, and came back at the weekend for another go.

Heather B turned round a bunch of my Nottinghamshire enquiries within a few hours, and I got the bug.  I also nabbed some web space and converted my family history book to a web site.

Many hands make light work.  Resources and talents are shared.  And the whole tone of the site is constructive and friendly.

All this in about six weeks!

Well I am new so I know how I found it - I had been searching for ages for one ancestor - bought birth and death certs which turned out not to be him.  I could only find him on two census years - one he said he was from Birkenhead and the previous one he said Altrinhcam!  Eventually Altrincham turned out to be the one - he was born in 1850.  So I finally had confirmation of father's name and occupation mathcing the marriage cert.

A kind contact researching the same name (different person no family connection) posted a look up request for 1851 census . Another very kind rootschatter posted the reply and suddenly I had a host of new ancestors.  The jigsaw puzzle fitted together perfectly.

Brilliant - I joined in and saw what lovely people chat here and now I am an incurable addict - I rush home from work to see what new posts have appeared.  Hope I can be as helpful to someone else one day.

I rang my uncle for his birthday (he was 80 and is my main source of family history) and when he asked me if any of the 5 men called Guy at Trafalgar were our ancestors, and I couldnt answer, I googled my great grandfather's name, and came up with a cousin I didnt know I had (ggf married twice, we never knew) in Canada, looking for rellies on here.  Most amazing luck, what a great site!!

Wow Diane!

A very warm welcome.  What a brilliant way of finding your way to RC  :D

That is the beauty of a site like this, old posts still come up in searches on Google.  If you look at the poster's profile you get an idea if they are still active which helps manage expectations.

I hope you find many more connections  :)

As a fairly new researcher I came across Rootschat by accident. I was completely blocked on some family lines and posted some questions. What amazed me was that within minutes I had received all sorts of replies and my advance with my family history was incredible. I then decided to subscribe to Ancestry.co.uk in order to try and complete my researches but am only too happy to make look-ups fpr other people. The friendliness of the people has been phenomenal.

I found this website via Googling one of the family names I'm researching and was amazed at just how big this website is! I've only been on a couple of times in the last few days but have already seen loads of information that I can use. I already subscribe to GeneReunited and have found that a very useful website too. The people on here seem very friendly and looks like I'm going to have fun and hopefully find even more members of my family tree.

I found this site  yesterday whilst 'googling' for geneology forums. Couldn't find anyhing i liked until i noticed a comment about 'Rootschat'. I liked what i found.
I've been searching for my Welsh ancestors but am relatively new to this game. Looking for Hughes and Evans in Wales is like trying to walk through treacle!!
I'm determined to persevere though and everything i've read on here so far encourages me a lot.
I've already told one of my daughters about this site, she is looking back on her fathers side.
So---Hello all. Polidor. :)

Thanks for the welcome.
I began my search by joining Genes Reunited. A relative living in New Zealand got in touch and has opened a couple more doors for me. A lovely photo copy of my mother's grandparents was a very pleasant surprise and also a copy of my own grandparent's marriage lines. I sometimes wish i was looking for relatives with a surname that began with 'Z' but am ploughing on regardless!!!!!.

Hi all
Talking to someone else interested in family history and they recommended this site.  I'd never heard of it, but browsed around and liked what I saw, so joined up.  Everyone is so helpful and friendly.  I'm totally hooked.
As I live in a rural area, and it's not always easy to get to major libraries or other resource centres.  This has been a godsend.  :D   :D

If they don't know the answer then they usually have a link to something (or someone) that can help.  Don't just restrict your self to the chat room though and have a whizz around the different boards you maybe suprised at what you find.

I noticed one query has no name on it at all....and it looks to be an interesting query when you add the information needed)

Hello,

I found rootschat via a recommendation on the Your Family Tree Magazine web forum.

I had a problem posting a new topic in a forum, and was made to feel very welcome in the chat room. :)

A great website! :)

Hello, focus!  And a big, warm Rootschat welcome to you!

You'll find a home here amongst the 40,000 members (not all of whom are active at once, thankfully - as least as far as keeping the site speedy, is concerned!)

Your Family Tree is a great magazine, and it's forum seems to share (and achieve) the same aspirations as Rootschat, so it's nice to see you with a foot in both.  Quite a few YFT members also post here at Rootschat, and vice versa.

cheers

Paul

How did I get here "I suppose that is the ultimate question. Well my partner (Prophetess) grab me by the hair and dragged me into "her" chat room to meet her friends. Well that was a wee while ago have finally managed to drag myself away from the chat room to look at the messages, she released me to put Mug Shots on, and found this.
What A magnificient site this is and how do I get this new part of my family onto my tree.

Around January this year I googled my grandmothers name in an idle moment, not expecting to find anything. I got to rootschat and saw a photo of grandma staring back at me! Used as tag picture by a rellie I had never heard of. Hooked from then on, that is what started me on the family history trail. 7 months now and I'm coming to the point where I need to get up and do serious digging, rather than just online searches. Eek!  :o

I was literally dragged in , by the most wonderful people( dare I mention names? (M)grub, bally & sdbadger), who asked did I have any problem ,  I replied ' I do actually '!  Within minutes I was overwhelmed with information of my forebears I dont think I could have ever have achieved on my own . Contacted a gentleman for a tree I found on GenesReunited. We spoke on the telephone, and in conversation he asked if I had come across rootschat - he said the help he had received had far outweighed the help he had found anywhere else, on any other site.
Have to say I agree wholeheartedly. And, the bonus is its free as well!
Have recommended it to my friends, relatives and family history society.

Hi Rosalind, and welcome to rootschat. Do not forget that once you have spun around the boards have a look in at the chat room where members can also help out (sometimes, it seems instantly). It can be a bit daunting going in there for the first time but once you get used to it, it does become easier. Enjoy your time on here as the natives don't bite  ;D and are very friendly.

MarieC thanks for that helpful information but the details I am after
concern a 36 year old. So what does a child board have to do with the
World War 1?
Title: Re: How did you find Rootschat?
Post by: MarieC on Saturday 12 April 08 14:51 BST (UK)
Rosalind,

"Child" board means that it is a sub-board of a main subject board - in this case, the Armed Forces Board!  It has nothing to do with children!

Take a look at the main page of Rootschat, the index board with all the boards listed on it, and you'll see what I mean.  It's a good idea to have a thorough browse around Rootschat and familiarise yourself with its layout.

Hi,

I found it by travelling along wee back roads and rough Irish country lanes. I came through many Irish townlands http://www.thecore.com/seanruad - 12k Irish Townland Search. I found 5 places starting with " Root ", three ending in " hat " threw in " sc " for super chat and arrived here . It has to be an Irish townland. I've never met so many people with the gift of the gab. Have all of yez kissed the Blarney Stone ?

I loved this post!  lol.  I cant remember how I found my way here! I have no sense of direction. But leastways, I found my way back. Its the best site I've been on.  ;D

I found a reference to rootschat on another board and 'googled'. People are generally helpful but it can be frustrating to post and get no replies ;D Even a 'sorry I can't help you but have you tried ...' would be helpful to newcomers. That is just an observation not a criticism ;D ;D

Yes Joy, I'm sure it's frustrating!  I always try to answer any unanswered post I come across, even if I can't help much, for just this reason!  These are in the minority though, to be fair.  In the past, I have sometimes posted a request for help and had a reply within a couple of minutes!   :o :o

Can,t remember how but 4 years ago threw in a query for a family in Oz. Completely forgot the whole thing till Jan. this year and got an answer from a 3rd. cousin. Since then I,ve been  using RC  fast and furious. Even found another 3 rd cousin in Oz. They didn,t know about one another, but have met up now and going great guns gathering info. I have a big family down under, at least 400 or so and all thanks to RC for helping me find them.
I must agree with Joy though, it,s frustrating never getting a reply to a query. Though on the whole I,ve been extremly lucky.
Cheers. Mary.

I had googled a place name, church actually, and up came a personal family history website where some of the people had been married in the same church and the owner of the website had posted a potted history of the church.  Included on the site were some restored photographs by the folks here on Rootschat so I thought I'd take a look..........................

Several people mentioned Rootschat to me firstly from the BBC's Family tree board but others as well.

Also I've mentioned Rootschat to some friends who are doing their own Family Tree researches.

Does this messageboard have anything to with subjects like the
"SoE" Special Operations Executive as I have heard of it and have just come across a distant late relative who was in the SoE a spy wow

It must have been a very popular style.  You're the 3rd person so far to have had one like it.   :D :D

I think mine was probably beigey-brown with dark brown collar and pocket tops, but it was a very long time ago and the memory is not what it was  :D

Loved reading all your comments - I know I'm a bit late joining in - like a lot of you, I can't quite remember how I came across RootsChat but I am so glad I did. Everyone is so helpful and giving of their time and expertise. I was also lucky enough to form a wonderful friendship with another RootsChatter and friendships last forever, don't they????

Last night I stumbled across a post on this site dating back to 2009 which relates to my great grandparents when they lived in Ceylon.

So far I am very impressed with this site and am amazed I never came across it before.

I can't believe that it's taken me so long to find this gem of a place. In desperation after a solid brick wall I typed in my ancestors name and hey presto up popped the forum. I have spent many months with my head down completing several trees so now feel entitled to a bit of relaxation and perhaps some help with those trickier searches. I don't find that I'm too good with the Irish side... ::)

Anyway it's nice to be here :D Patti

Thanks Jan I expect you will be seeing a lot of me, I am totally absorbed in it, I love history I collect old things and love reading old books,  I read the Flora Thompson books and then watched Lark Rise on Tv and couldn't resist drawing up the Timms family tree. How sad is that?
I guess I'm in some sort of time slip...

To be honest, I don't recall. But I do remember sitting down on the lounge one day, and wondered what it was that was sticking out behind the cushions.  ;)
In another dimension, I typed in search for the truth in google, and look what I found....

I was surfing the net and saw a question I could answer, it was almost 11pm and I was thinking about bed but thought I should pass on my information.
Then I found out I had to be registered to reply, okay I thought, I'll register, seems like everyone in England has the same user name or password as me, it took me forever to register but I did.
Next I think I chose Forum and all of a sudden people from everywhere were saying Hello and welcoming me to the forum.
They were all very nice but I thought this isn't where I should  be, so I asked them where should I be and in seconds I was overwhelmed with help.
I have never looked back, everyone was so friendly and helpful, I managed to post my information but buy now it was 2am and it was replied to the next day.
My first introduction but what an experience, whenever I meet a Genealogist with a problem I say" have you tried Rootschat"

I can't remember either.  But it was way back in 2007.

It's a superb site with so many helpful people.  Shame I couldn't log back in with my old user name and fouled up because I had changed my email and couldn't remember my password.

So I had to re register.  Hey ho.

It's a wonder I remember anything these days.

This is a first for me.Never joined anything or been in a forum!! Both my parents just passed away and am planning a trip to Scotland (from Australia) so was researching Temple in Midlowthian and found this site. My father was a Sinclair whose grandparents were from Muthill. Dad was also a Freemason and I now have his belongings. Very Cool!!

Thankyou Jess,
Yes, this site is loaded with friendly and amazing people. Well I am still emptying my parents home (very hard and lots of work) and yesterday I found an ancient looking convict button off a uniform. Not surprising, since I am in Australia. I was thinking I will never know where it came from but anything is possible. Any ideas what to do?

Hi, you could always take a photo and upload it onto the site and ask if anyone could give you information about it, its a long shot but you never know your luck. If you do not know which forum to post a request on put it on the "common room" and a moderator will probably place it on the forum he or she thinks would be more beneficial.
Best of luck with your research.

Hello Lookinak75,
Welcome to Rootschat. I can only assume you mean Genesre*****d. The other pay sites all allow you to look at records, how many is dependent on how you have paid. And don't be fooled into thinking that you can only get info from the paid sites; freemd, freecen, freereg, and familysearch are all good free sites that are handy to use.

I'm still quite new to Rootschat too. I found it from an ad in a magazine I got out from our library. I think it's fab -always something interesting to read, I find myself reading through old posts quite often.

I tend to use FindMyPast and A* for free at the library. Although it's just when I'm getting somewhere that my two hours are up or my one-year-old wakes up (I pop him in his pushchair for his nap if I fancy a little look!).

I'm fairly new to this site, having asked a couple of questions elsewhere. I found the site via a friend on a private forum, mainly based on a shared interest in wildlife. I'd said something about having problems finding information about some particular person or situation, and she suggested RootsChat. She'd found it very useful in fidning out about family who'd moved to the US.

I googled a family surname just to see what would turn up and amongst the results was a dialogue between two Rootschatters ... so I joined in.  I learned about part of my family, who had emigrated to New Zealand unbeknownst to me.  Since then, I have met up in the UK with one of chatters(an Australian|) and her husband.  We continue to e-mail each other. I have also visited New Zealand on holiday visiting Archives centres whilst I was there but missed meeting up with the other chatter by two months: she sadly died but I visited her locality and saw places that she had told me about and remembered her warmth and generosity.

I was being mislead by a web page proclaiming its abilities at discovering a pauper ancestor that I knew had been in the workhouse and eventually died there. Though the web page came up 0 after several edits including a wildcard entry. Reminding myself that I did not really need this info and that no site can ever be 100% perfect. Hi Sandra

Well light relief would make a pleasing change. I am on Ancestry and I can only assume that my attempts to correct a few mistakes by persons blindly accepting every single "hint" is seen as invasive or ill informed? I could give streams of examples but I am sure there might be a thread about it someplace and if not I might just toy with the concept.

Regards,
Tim

Hi Clogs,

There is a thread linked below called "Inaccuracy Ancestry Trees" - might be worth a read.

Somebody had a big thread on part of my family, which I found by Googling.... my GG-grandmother and her mother are both in other people's threads.... which I've not contributed to as I had "nothing of value to add", I knew that stuff (and more), but I'm silently hoping they'll post a gem at some future point :)

Hi Stanley, I am sure the other members would appreciate you just saying "Hi" so that they know you are also a rellie - I am sure they would love to know the "more" stuff too :)

Well, the stuff I know they would either already know if they've looked, and/or wouldn't be interested in as it's not really their family.  It's the family of my GG-grandmother's husband/children (his children before they married, with his 1st wife) and their children together .... but then my GG-grandmother did a horrible thing and dumped them all once he'd died.  So there's little interest from others in what she did next (prison + illegitimate children).  I'm from that shady downline :)

Someone on anther forum (not family tree related but where a fair bit of research into other families goes on) mentioned it and I thought it might assist with family research.

I have forgotten how. However I am on it every day and the most remarkable problem of mine was an illegitimate boy whose father was found by RootsChatters and I traced back both mother and father as if nothing unusual happened . Small village of Brandon, Suffolk and the mother left clues in her son's name helped.

I have forgotten now. But RootsChatters  have performed the impossible. They cleared a blockage in my genealogy with the father of an illegitimate son Harry Erwin Baskerville, of Brandon, Suffolk, identified and I was able to continue Harry's line back on both mother and father as if nothing had happened. Hope this does not sound too bumptious but I have been able to help others too. From Australia to Zambia (the latter actually being Northern Rhodesia at the time).

I have been with Rootschat since 2005 but I have a feeling I registered prior to that recommended by a woman  who I met in London at the archives in Northampton Street, we became very good friends but sadly she isn't able to use her computer now due to ill health.

It is both  compelling and rewarding being able to help and also ask for help ourselves, it amazes me how much people know about family history and genealogy, I have been at this lark for over 20 years and it never ceases to amaze me as to how helpful people are and of course I offer my help when I can

Everyone likes a challenge and that is what Rootschat is

I never heard of Rootschat before. I tried some time ago to see what info is available online about my ancestry, but I discovered my surname "Hastings" returns so many results that it was no use at all. I did find one pay site that sending me unsolicited advertising, and that put me off immediately.

Recently I learned however that my grandfather's name was originally something other than Hastings, and so I tried entering both those surnames into a search engine (not Google) and Rootschat was 3rd or 4th on the list of hits.

There are too many pages to go back through them all, but has anyone else seen the typo in the original poll question (not the Subject)?  "Rootchat".

Anyway, one night, too cold to remove my gloves, I was seeking a
psychological evaluation method involving inkblots, and mistyped 'Rorschach'.  I then decided to see if my sense of humour was inherited. I've never looked back.

I was looking for help on Romany surnames and came across a thread on here where one of my great uncles was mentioned on a "London Romany hawkers" list. It helped solved the mystery as to whether or not my great-grandmother had Romany heritage, which has always been a long topic of debate in my family! I've found the site very useful, especially for lookups and identifying brick walls in my family tree (particularly my paternal side, as I never knew my father, so didn't have anything apart from my father's name and surname to go on).
