Hi Linda
a John Fairclough married a Margaret King on 15 September 1730 at St Michael's Church, Aughton...could be yours? :)
There are 4 children born to John where Margaret is named as mother between 1730 and 1737 and Luke could well be a younger sibling.
Samuel chr. 25 July 1731 @ St Michael, Aughton
Anne chr. 26 March 1733
Thomas chr. 24 August 1735
William born and chr. 4 September 1737

Hi Ruth
Thanks for quick reply have had a look at that one and I did wonder if that is the answer but cant find anywhere Luke being connected with that family and on LDS it says just the Father as John.... ??? Didnt make things easy for us LOL
Linda

nope - they never do ;D
if Luke's mother wasn't put on the baptism record it may be pretty impossible to check whether Mum was Margaret King or not as it all pre-dates parents on marriage certificates and the census....
-
So frustrating !!!
Do you have any thoughts on the parents of John (Lukes father) there was a marriage in Aughton of John and Mrs John Fairclough in 1743 I reckon it could mean he was born around 1722 any ideas would be most welcome Ruth..

The only record in the actual Aughton parish records (not familysearch.org) is of John and Margaret King in 1730. If these two are Luke's parents realistically John could have been born in the very early 1700s.
That one of John & Mrs John doesn't appear in the actual Aughton records. Some of the information on familysearch may not necessarily be accurate especially if its got "about 1743" as the record of the date. I've got a few dates like that in my tree and the actual church record has the marriage long before the "about" date so I wouldn't place much stock on the 1743 as it doesn't actually show a specific date. Some of the other info on familysearch.org is user submitted so its not necessarily accurate (or right).
Only on the assumption that John was born in Aughton too there are (unfortunately) 4 possibles in the registers:-
John, chr. 14 Jun 1702
John, chr. 18 October 1706
John, chr. 30 September 1716 (possibly a bit young to be marrying in 1730 but you never know!)
Trouble with these 3 is that they are all "son of Samuel"; no father's occupation so its a bit of a nightmare!
There is also John, son of Samuel Fairclough and Margaret Molyneux chr. 19 June 1703 or 1704 (he could be born outside marriage if they have named the mother like that)

Many Thanks Ruth
All your thoughts sound feasible I guess I will just have to keep trying you never know I might find a breakthrough.
Good Luck with your research too.

Hello Swannie 28,
I know this is a couple of months on from your original post, but I have just been surfing some of the older boards this evening.
I am currently working on my wife's tree, which has 15 Faircloughs on already. However, my earliest date for a John is his birth in Aughton on 19th January 1799.
His parents were Robert (1780 - 1847) and Nancy (nee Moorcroft) of Ormskirk, born 22 Nov 1778.
It would appear that John had 13 siblings!! Very busy parents!!
It would appear that they were all born at Aughton Chap (sic) - this could be Chase - except for the first child, whose place of birth is given as Lydiate.
Lydiate is only a couple of mile SW of Aughton. I haven't had chance to check on their baptisms yet, but I would guess that they will be at St Michael's Church, Aughton. I will be checking on Lancashire OPC for my own satisfaction some time soon, if you would like to know.
Hopefully, I will get further back without too much difficulty, as it would appear that the family didn't have time to move away from the area and I am living only six miles away from Aughton.
If you would like more details, please let me know.

Hi BurscoughLad
I would indeed love to hear of any information you may obtain about the Faircloughs.
Thank you for your kind offer
I live down South now so don't get the chance to get up North very often.

Hello Linda,
I've had a bit of a root around today and may have something of interest for you.
Starting with Luke F. born 1744 in Aughton; there is a marriage at St Cuthbert's, Halsall to Mary Thomson (of this parish) on 18 Dec 1763
Marriage reg 1754 - 1787; Pg 28; Entry 111.
As has been previously posted, there was a marriage at St M's on 15 September 1730 between a John and Margaret King.
However, - not a million miles away - there is a marriage on 1 Jun 1739 at St Helen's Church, Sefton, Lancashire, England
John Fairclough & Ellen Heys, both of this parish, published.
If John was working / lodging within the parish of Sefton, only one set of banns would be needed. Just a thought . . .
There is a much later entry for Maghull; interesting because the father is a tailor:
Marriage: 27 Dec 1865 St Andrew, Maghull, Lancashire, England
John Fairclough - (X), 22 Farm labourer Bachelor of Halsall
Mary Bond - 20 Spinster of Halsall
Groom's Father: Thomas Fairclough, Tailor
Bride's Father: Matthew Bond, Labourer
Witness: James Bond; Margaret Bond
Married by Banns by: Joseph Lyon Incumbent
Register: Marriages 1837 - 1919, Page 106, Entry 211
Possibly two generations later
Well it's getting to be late, so I'll sign off for time being
Hope the above is of interest and doesn't muddy the waters too much!!

Hello Linda,
Me again!!
I was wondering if you know about googling "Lancashire OPC"
This is a site for parish records from Lancashire - OPC is ON LINE PARISH CLERK.
Not all churches have put their data online, but the older ones, in which you would probably be interested have quite a good deal of data available.
From your point of view the following parishes will probably be most relevant:
Aughton, St Michael
Ormskirk, Sts Peter & Paul
Sefton, St Helen
Maghull, St Andrew
Halsall, St Cuthbert
Walton on the Hill, St Mary
A general search of Fairclough brings up 6630 hits
That should provide you with something to chew on!!
