I have a  John SIMCOCK that seems to match your John who was born in Cornwall c 1836 and emigrated  to South Australia

John SIMCOCK married Julia Ann THOMAS in Callington,  South Australia 23 Feb 1856.
Source:  www.nla.gov.au  Advertiser (Adelaide South Aust) Sat 24 Feb 1906 Golden Wedding notice:  Simcock-Thomas.-At Callington, on Feb 23, 1856, by Rev. R. C. Flackhard, John, eldest son of I (?) Simcock, Kanmantoo, to Julia A., eldest daughter of Nicholas Thomas, Callington. Present address Norwood

John SIMCOCK died in Norwood, South Australia 14 Jun 1915.
Source: www.nla.gov.au  The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA )Tues 15 June 1915 Death notice: SIMCOCK.-On the 14th June, at Muller-street, Norwood. John, beloved husband of Julia Simcock, in his 80th year, late of Kanmantoo.

Julia Ann SIMCOCK (nee THOMAS) was alive in 1919 - she placed an in memorium notice for her husband in the newspaper in Jun 1919.  She died sometime before the end of 1925 in South Australia

So far I've only found one child for them:  Alfred SIMCOCK born South Australia about 1857, died Moonta South Australia 05 Feb 1901.  I haven't found any descendants for him yet.

Julia Ann THOMAS was born in Cornwall and arrived in South Australia with her parents and siblings on 27 Jan 1848 on the ship "Success"  Two of her uncles and two male cousins were also on this ship.

Cheers

This is great. I have a lot  of info on the other descendants of the other family members, but this is the first time I have made contact with a descendant of Nicholas THOMAS

I am putting in the names of Julia Ann's THOMAS family into this thread so that other THOMAS researchers will be alerted

The THOMAS family all arrived in Adelaide on the same ship  in 1848:
3 brothers Mauris THOMAS, John THOMAS & Nicholas THOMAS;
The sons of Mauris THOMAS, Mauris THOMAS (jnr) and Charles THOMAS;
The wife and children of Nicholas THOMAS.

Were the 11 children the offspring of Julia Ann & John?

Could you please answer these questions for me
What was the name of Julia Ann's mother?
What were the names of Julia Ann's siblings?
Was Priscilla THOMAS a sister or relation of Julia Ann's?

Cheers
Barb

Julia Ann Thomas THOMAS was baptised 20 Apr 1836 at Illogan parents Nicholas and Mary

Her brother John was baptised 12 Dec 1836 so Julia was probably not a baby (since census and other records seem to indicate she was born about 1833)

Now there is a Nicholas THOMAS = Mary ROSCROW 13 Feb 1836 in Illogan - possibly a reason for the late baptism

Looks like Nicholas died 23 Apr 1873 Nr Callington Dist Str 52 401 He was aged 60 status relative not recorded residence near Callington

No sign of a death or remarriage for Mary

I would think if there was a second marriage between 1841 census and immigration in 1848 it should be in Redruth district of which Illogan is a part but I do not see anything. There are no births in SA to Nicholas and Elizabeth.

YOU ARE A STAR
It will take me weeks to digest all this and try and fit it into what I already have
And then there is Bob's data

Half the  population of South Australia must be descended from these Cornish SIMCOCK and THOMAS lines!

Thanks so much
As always you are so generous with your time and expertise
:) :)

I forgot to mention to Bob that there were also two THOMAS women, Mary Ann KIDD ( nee THOMAS) and Emmeline THOMAS, daughters of Mauris THOMAS snr, ie cousins of Julia Ann.  They arrived in Melbourne in 1856.  Emmeline moved to SA and married George Henry COBBIN, chemist,  in Mt Barker in 1865 and then Francis Isaac William Elford SMITH, chemist,  in 1896 in Port Augusta.

Mary Ann KIDD (nee THOMAS) married William Cowley WATTS in Melbourne

You are very welcome Barb,

I love it when we have posts uniting Cornwall and South Australia  ;D

Now for Bob's SI[NM]COCKS

John SINCOCK = Martha CHENOWETH 21 Jun 1835 Crowan

There is a John SINCOCK baptised in Crowan 19 Jan 1812 parents Edward and Mary

also John SINCOCK 2 Feb 1806 Crowan parents Edward and Grace
also John SINCOCK 25 Jun 1809 Crowan parents Edward and Grace
also John SINCOCK 25 Feb 1810 Crowan parents William and Grace
also John SINCOCK 20 Aug 1815 Crowan parents William and Grace

Sorry no luck with a baptism listing father as John. I can see these marriages in Crowan but no marriage for a John at this time period either. How do you know his father was John?

Martha CHENOWETH was baptised 1 Jan 1814 Crowan parents Samuel and Martha

Samuel CHENOWETH = Martha JOHNS 26 May 1807 Crowan

Cheers Kris  :)

About Nicholas THOMAS's 2nd wife Elizabeth
I think she is Elizabeth PENHALL (nee DALLEY or DALLY) who arrived in SA from Cornwall with her husband William PENHALL and 8 children in Sep 1847.

William PENHALL died in SA in 1850.

I wonder what happened to Nicholas THOMAS's first wife?

Cheers

But Bob, where is the  baptism to verify this  ???

You say you have this but can you please supply the source? The marriage is too early to list father. SA deaths do not list fathers, the burial at Callington does not list parents. Generally babies are not baptised the day they are born unless it is a private baptism - usually at  home because the baby is not expected to live. Sometimes they do survive and there is usually in these circumstances a second entry to indicate they were received into the church at a later date.

This is 1 day before the the baptism I found  to Edward and Mary  :-\

WA connection
I found your 2008 email by Googling Simcock and Crowan.     I am a great grandson of Joseph who married Isabella Humphrey. Have you heard from Dorothy Millar also from WA? Dot is a great granddaughter of Jane who married William Jones. Dots grandmother Martha Annie was one of 4, went on to have 12. My grandmother Martha Annie was one of 10, went on to have 7.       ...so there is quite a tribe over here. I assume you are from John jnr?   Hope to hear from you.   Regards Gavin

Hi
Iis there still anyone prepared to swap stories between the Aussie and Brit Bedggoods?
I have been a bit out of touch (last 10 years or so) with the Aussie family tree but am keen to get reactivated again.
The Brit relatives have always held a fascination but I have not had the resources to do much about it.

The internet may help with both expanding the Aussie tree and learning a bit about the Brits.

Looking forward to any response

Bob,
I am descended from a brother of your Elizabeth May (nee Bedggood), whose name was George.
I dare say that you know that six of Elizabeth's siblings came to Australia to live (and die), although her youngest brother Josiah later went to New Zealand and met up with his cousins there before passing away in 1911.

I know next to nothing about the Mays in SA but I do hve a copy of Elizabeth, Charles and Josiah Mays birth certificates.

I would like to share the history of the 1850's  if you wish, but I have no yearnings to try and learn all of the May clan in SA. However, the connection and arrival of so many from the one family coming to Australia is of interest to me.

Lets see where we get to.

Alan

Bob,
Just looked up Jane 1845 and she is presumably the youngest of 6 daughters to James Bedggood. James is an older brother of your Elizabeth May (nee Bedggood) and my George Bedggood.

James came to Australia in 1849.

More if you require it.

There were so many coming here, with their spouce and children. What was their interactions here during those early days?

Jack
I've looked up John & Jane Simcock/Sincock in South Australian Genealogy and so far I can't find anything about them. They didn't leave Adelaide for the countryside to farm and there's no blacksmith business listed for John, nor does William John marry in South Australia. I couldn't find them in the mining town of Broken Hill where lots of Simcock/Sincocks had stacks of children either (although John & Jane must have finished their family with William John as they were in their late 30s on arrival). I think they might have travelled to Victoria in search of work- there was still a goldrush there, whereas South Australia was settled into copper and tin mining (like Cornwall). Unfortunately even Australians can't access the Victorian BMDs without paying to look, so you'd need to use contacts or a facility like Ancestry to delve into Victorian records.
Sorry about the lack of success, but I did look hard!
Scratch the Victorians next!

In search of Simcock/Sincock who ended up in Auckland New Zealand, producing my cousin, Alan Simcock about 1952. I don't know how we are related!

Hello again Gary
I have discovered a marriage added to the SA Genealogy site, for William John Sincock to Florence Robina Arriola in 1903, registered at Adelaide, South Australia. Go to http://www.genealogysa.org.au/
to search for any offspring etc.

John and Julia are buried in the same grave at West Terrace Cemetery and on their headstone Arthur William SIMCOCK (who is buried at Bute Cemetery) is named as their grandson. He is also named as Julia's grandson in his death notice http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article89162286

I would speculate that he was the illegitimate son of one of their daughters.
