She may well have travelled under a different name from either Gardner or Perrott.

I don't know if you've noticed the 1927 birth (won't put the name here as said child may be living) under surname Gardner mother's maiden name Perrott that's listed on freebmd (West Bromwich area). Might be worth taking a look at.

"They" had the child adopted - was her husband listed as an informant on the certificate?

It might be that Maud had moved away by then but gave her husband's details (even if he wasn't the actual father).  Was she the informant, and if so, what was her address at the time? Since this is the last confirmed sighting of her you should try and get as much information as you can about where she was and who else might have been with her at the time.

Ask her to have a look. For there to be no information on the informant sounds impossible, unless because of the adoption some fields have been left out.
It should be in column 7. (see here: http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/births.htm )
The name of the informant may be the same as the mother or father's name and the address may be the same as the address of birth (that usually means the birth was a home birth).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandwell_General_Hospital
 - this was originally the infirmary attached to West Bromwich Union Workhouse.

It seems (according to the NA) these people may have some records for Hallam Hospital, perhaps drop them an email:

I believe Maud Perrott Gardner is my grandmother.  My mother, Barbara, born Feb 1, 1927, was the daughter of Maude Gardner.  I have Barbara's birth certificate.  Barbara was adopted two years later by Edward and Alice Bax (all deceased).  I also have that adoption certificate.  Barbara married an American GI and migrated to the US.  This information is brand new to me and I would love to have additional information about my grandparents, Gardner and Perrott.  I would also be pleased to share any information I have.
