Title: Completed, many thanks. Nellie Christine Smith 1886 Chorlton
Post by: fredquimby on Wednesday 08 September 10 14:42 BST (UK)
I am trying to find out about my Grandfather's sister, Nellie Christine Smith.  She was born on 28 Oct 1886 at 56 Percy St, Hulme, to John Thomas Smith and Nellie Neil who I believe married late in 1885.  She was the first of 9 siblings born between 1886 and 1900, none of which I ever knew.  I am interested to find out if she ever married and had a family and when she died.

If anyone can help I would be very grateful.  :)

Is this the family 1901?
John T Smith 44
Ellen Smith 37
Nellie C Smith 14
John C Smith 13
Hilda M Smith 11
James M Smith 9
Ermina A Smith 8
Dora W Smith 5
Clifford H Smith 3
Leonard V Smith 2
Arnold J Smith 5 Months

Class: RG13; Piece: 3665; Folio: 151; Page: 29.

Do you know if she was ever witness to any of her siblings marriages? and where is she living 1911?
OK scrub the last bit she is still with her parents and siblings then, so we are looking for a marriage after 1911. Fingers crossed she used her middle name  ::)

Hi Mr. Migky, yes this is the family.  John C Smith was my grand father, this is the only marriage certificate I have from the family to date, his witnesses were C. Smith (I assume younger brother Clifford) and JT Smith (I assume his father).  I have no knowledge of any of the rest of the family marriages.   ???

The name Smith is giving me a headache  :D

This is a poss for William E Naylor who died 1945 age 56 Bucklow Cheshire ?

I can see a far few Naylor's / Smiths children born Salford & Manchester from 1920, but pin pointing any that could be yours would be just guess work.
Saying that, without certificates to prove any i have posted, you are still only taking a chance i found the right matches?

Looking? i can see no more for this area.
Bucklow i think comes under Trafford council these days. I would see if you can find some one to check the electoral roll for you from 1910 on as i know the Smith's were living at 73 Shewsbury street, Old Trafford befor the lady i found got married and William Edward Naylor was living at 121 Chester road , Hulme which are not far apart.

Trafford web site link  (http://www.trafford.gov.uk/LeisureAndCulture/Libraries/RecordsAndArchives-LocalStudies) <--- a very good site.
The only thing is if they are buried in any of the council run cemeteries, they charge about £12 per name to search for them with details?

Just on the off chance i found the right man who married Nellie?
This man shown on the absent voters list at the  121 Chester road, Hulme. Manchester address.
William Edward Naylor
Private S/38063 10th reserve battalion. London regiment.
Later number 427204.

There is a medal card for this man and maybe possible service/pension records but not had time to search for them.

1929 directory has:
73 Shrewsbury street, Old Trafford.
John T Smith
Sanitary engineer

So looks like if it is the correct family, they stayed put for a few years then?

Just logged on after work and found your additional posts.  You are an absolute star!!  I ordered the marriage certificate for Nellie and William Naylor last night to verify that you have found the right family.  I feel sure you have as I know from a newspaper clipping I have that my granddads family were at 73 Shrewsbury St in 1916.

I don't know how you folks manage to find all this info, this is the second time I have asked for help and have not been let down.

Can't thank you enough.  :-*

Sorry not to reply before now, didn't realise you had replied.  The cutting I have is from the Manchester Evening News dated Jan 16 1918.  It reads 'The parents of Jack Smith, who lives at 73, Shrewbury St, Old Trafford, have received news that their son has been awarded the Military Medal. He is an old scholar of the Cornbrook Park Wesleyan Day School, Old Trafford.'  I do intend to find out more about his war record as I have three medals of his from the 14-18 war.  But that will be another story . . .

I actually wanted to let you know the certificate proved you had the right family, father's name, residence, witnesses James MacDonald and Dora Winifred, all correct.  I have even found a Naylor living in Knutsford so I've written on the off chance!

Thanks again  :)
Fred

Just as an aside Mr Migky.  I started a post to find out about my granddad's medals and got directed to the Manchester Regiment Group forum, I see you contribute there as well!

I am losing hours reading lots of posts and think you guys are all fantastic to give your time like you do.

I'm still waiting to see if my letter gets a reply, if not I'll have to start looking for the next sibling down the list!!

Regards,
Fred  :)

Hi again

Sorry to reply this way but I am a new comer to this site and are unable to send personal messages, also a little confussed with site.

Have been tracing the Smith Family for about 3 years and had a year off and as you know the Smith family is not easy to trace and I was in need of a break.

My  family connection is Clifford Smith-have quite a few bits of information but as to date I cannot find any info about my Grandfather this being your Great Grandfather.

Maybe we can talk direct but in the meantime please keep in touch and we can keep up to date with our finds.

Regards Patsymax

Hi

I have just joined trying to chase my family tree.
My grandfather was Stanley Naylor ( related to William Naylor) and my grandmother Norah Smith who was related to Nellie. My father Peter Naylor was born in 1938 in Eccles/Swinton. Norah's father was Peter Smith. Norah's family used to own bakers shops and worked at Hovis.

Hi Seagull Surfer,

Got your message about the Naylor family. I have not had the opportunity to do any family tree stuff for a long time. Give me a few days to get my head back into it and then I can talk more sensibly about it.  Nellie Christine Smith was my grandfather's sister.

Thanks
