Title: Birth in India. Father serving in British Army.
Post by: Francesanne on Thursday 09 September 10 16:22 BST (UK)
My Great Grandfather served in the British Army and spent many years in India. He had several children by his 1st wife. His son JAMES GILCHRIST was born on the 25th December 1884, Christened on the 17th January 1885 in Cannanore, Madras. His father was JAMES GILCHRIST & his mother was JANE GILCHRIST. I'm desperately trying to discover Jane's (believe she was Irish) maiden name and thought by obtaining a copy of his birth certificate I could learn her maiden name. She died in Poonamallee. Madras on the 29th April 1886. Can anyone suggest the best way to obtain the certificate? many thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Francesanne,

If your G Grandfather is the James Gilchrist who was born in New Brunswick, Canada, his Army records are on Findmypast.

There is a great deal of detail.

Wife is shown as Jane McCully, (deceased) and they married at Comber, County Down, on 17 January 1871.

Hi Yorklass, you're an absolute star! Thank you so very much for your help.
I'm overwhelmed.  My husbands just come out of hospital today and haven't been on computer tonight but I'm going straight to Find My Past. Thanks a million. xxxx

haven't found a birth reg for James, but there are records for some of his siblings

GRO army birth indices
Alice Alma Gilchrist Bellary (station) 1883 pg 753
Marion macnish Gilchrist Bellary 1882 pg 777

GRO regimental birth indices
Henry Gilchrist Dagshaie 1873 32nd regiment vol 1061 pg 65

You can get these from the GRO.

the 2nd marriage for James is on the LDS pilot search India Marriages and gives his father's name as William Ross

SORRY! Just a typing error. You can get them from the GRO - I shouldn't post so late - not concentrating!

Hi Osprey, many thanks for both posts. I've discovered they're not James's siblings but his children & two that I didn't know existed. Also discovered Henry in the last few days. I knew about James Jr. because he appeared on the 1901 English census. I'm still pondering over grooms father being WILLIAM ROSS. Wondering if that could be an error. I was expecting to see James Gilchrist.I will investigate further.

Very pleased to learn that I can obtain certificates from GRO. They're very efficient and pretty reasonable.

Thanks to everyone for all the help given. :)

Warmest wishes.

Hi Osprey, ignore my last post. Think I'm losing the plot!!! :-[shouldn't post when I'm tired. That's the problem of having too many relatives with the same christian name. You're information is absolutely correct :).
Think it's time I called it a day and went to bed.

All the best.
