Hi Everyone!
I'm going to try this again with more information!
When my great-grandfather and his brother came to the USA in 1912 from Sligo, Ireland they changed our last name from McTieran to Tierney.
Patrick was my great-grandfather and his brother was Hugh.They married sisters.Katherine and Bridgett McMorrow, and they came to the USA in 1914 from Lietrum, Ireland.
Patrick and Katherine's children would be:
Kathleen(1923),
Desmond,
Frances(1929),
James(1925).
Hugh and Bridgett's children would be:
Ruth(1923),
Elizabeth(1925),
marggret(1927),
Agnes(1929),
Jean(1936).
I do have more information but this should get me started i hope!! Please get back to me if you think you could help..

As your interests are more in descendents I will move this message to the area mentioned. I am going to put it into the Ireland Board as you mention 2 different counties.
I would suggest you also place a separate entry into each of the counties: Waterford and Sligo with as much detail as you have on each branch of this family.
You may also like to post a message in the Beginners forum asking for general tips in tracing family. Please do not be afraid to ask questions, there are lots of people happy to help. ;)

Hi,
As you have close dates of births and counties, you're first aim should be to get the townlands. This I would think would be easiest from the birth certificates. If you have the exact dates, you can order these from the GRO in Dublin

If you don't know the dates or index references, you need to search the indexes. These are in Ireland or should be available in your local CLS Family History Centre.
Once you have the townland, I would recommend searching the 1901 and 1911 census for the family details. This has loads of interesting information.

Hi Newbie,
I had a similar problem with my Irish family. They kept saying they were born in Ireland on the records which isn't a lot of use. Then I found them on the 1861 English census and low and behold, I had the townland name. So what I'm saying is check all census, birth, marriage, death, burial, children's births, baptisms records that you can and one may strike lucky.

Thanks for that, I really haven't progressed very far on this side, have got very interested in my Trollops from Wiltshire!
When I do start again with the Tierney's I'll remember your advice and encouragement, hope I don't sink in a black hole ;D
