Title: Samuel James Theodore THICKNESS & Emily Sarah Euphemia SIEVERS
Post by: rutht22000 on Saturday 18 September 10 16:19 BST (UK)
I am trying to find out some more about this husband and wife who were in New South Wales by 1846.

Samuel (b.1818) was from St Budeaux, Devon and Emily (b.1826) was from London.  They married 1845 in London (not sure where).

They had 3 known children in New South Wales -

John b.1846
Frederick b.1848
Fransisca b. 1852

Emily died in 1868 in Cooma, NSW but I have nothing more about the family or what happened to the children.

Her brother John Nicholas Sievers (b.1837) apparently also went to Australia, but he is an absolute blank other than his birth in London.

Any information about their life in Australia would be gratefully received.

Regards and thanks
Ruth

The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser NSW 31st July 1884
SUDDEN DEATH.-On Tuesday evening Samuel Thicknesse died very suddenly and in circumstances of a very melancholy character at his residence, East Maitland road. He retired to bed about 9 o'clock, and afterwards became very restless and complained of heart-burn. He subsequently got out of bed to get something to ease his pain, and Mrs. Thicknesss, who was in-bed, immediately heard a fall, and on getting up she saw her husband lying on the floor. She endeavored to raise him, and being unable to do so, she went to the front door and called for assistance, Two young men, who were passing, responded to the call, and on lifting the unfortunate man up, found that life was extinct. Dr. Russell afterwards attended. The deceased was 66 years old, was born in England, and had been a school-teacher until about twelve months ago, when he was superannuated. For some time past he had been in reduced circumstances, owing to losses, and fretted a good deal, but did not appear to be in ill-health. Yesterday afternoon an inquest was held before Mr. A.Vindin,  coroner, at Mr George Galley's, Cross Keys Inn, when the above facts were elicited. Dr. Russell, in conjunction with Drs Blackwell, made a post mortem examination of the body, and found that all the organs were perfectly healthy, except the heart and kidneys, which were diseased ; and the medical evidence was that the disease of those organs was the cause of death, The Jury found in accordance with such evidence.

It appears that he must have remarried after Emily died in October 1868, (his age also fits born 1818)

The Sydney Morning Herald 5th Oct 1868
Deaths
On the 28th September, at her residence, Seymour, Maneroo, EMILY SARAH EUPHEMIA, the beloved wife of Samuel THICKNESSE, after a long and painful illness, aged 42.

Banns were read between Samuel THeodore JAMES bachelor and Emily Uphemia SIEVERS spinster minor on the 21, 28 and 5th 1845 at St Dunstan and all Saints Stepney.

there is a date of 7 Oct 1845 preceeeding the banns dates (covering 5 couples with same banns dates) wonder if it is possibly the marriage date.

Looks like the marriage was in West Ham district in the Dec 1/4

THICKNESSE Samuel James Theodore = SIEVERS Emily Sarah Euphemia 12 599

There is this curious assisted immigration

Sep 1862 aboard the OCEAN EMPRESS

Samuel THICKNESS 44 single, native place Plymouth Devon occ Schoolmaster. was C of E and could read and write

not spotting him in 1861

MMM Now this seems to fit with Logan's find. Are their 2 Samuels?

The only baptism I am spotting is

Samuel James Theodore THICKNESSE baptised 7 Jul 1819 Plymouth St Budeaux parents John and Sarah (father Captain RN)

Well it is the same man Logan has found, remarried.

Samuel James Theodor THICKNESSE = Sarah Ann THURSTON Bega 1873 #1913

Can't find any Samuel THICKNESS on any census to date. All seems to fit with the passenger list re age and occupation. What on earth was he doing back in England applying for assisted passage in 1862.  ???

Monaro Pioneers site has 11 references to people with surname THICKNESSE (and 1 for THICKNESS) includes this person.
http://www.monaropioneers.com/

THICKNESSE, Samuel James Theodore m 1873 in Bega to Sarah Ann THURSTON,
one child listed to this couple:  Edward S THICKNESSE. b: 1886 in Bega, NSW d: 1947 in Sydney, NSW

Looks like some certs are needed to unravel the number of Samuel James Theodore THICKNESSs there are!  This one could even be the one who was husband of Emily, (as Kris has already said)  as he would have been 55 at the time of the marriage - although 68 at the time of the birth of Edward - still not impossible.

There is also this person:
THICKNESS, Augusta Emily Frances b: 3 Mar 1850 in Market St., Wollongong, NSW d: 20 Jan 1934 in Mosman, NSW
NSW BMDs would suggest that Augusta is another child of Samuel and Emily
Death 1934  Augusta E MOULD, parents Samuel M T and Emily reg at MOSMAN  #3120
Marriage: 1870  George Y MOULD  = Augusta E F THICKNESSE, reg at SHOALHAVEN  #3402

Doesn't appear to be a burial record on the site for Emily

So Samuel's 2nd wife Sarah (nee Thurston) suffered a  nasty accident      :o  'ouch'

The Syndey Morning Hearld, Monday 18th May 1874 page 5.
SINGULAR ACCIDENT - The Bega Gazette re- ports that Mrs. S. Thicknesse, of Bembooks, met with a
serious accident in a peculiar manner, on Friday last. Mrs. Thicknesse went out for a walk with some children, and coming to a clump of dead wattles not far from Mr. Power's house, she tried to pull down a piece of stick which was lodged in one of the trees. The very slight effort used as sufficient to cause one of the trees to break off short at the roots; the tree fell on Mrs Thicknesse, and   pinned her to the ground. The children gave the alarm, and Messrs. Power and J. Kiss ran and extracted Mrs. Thicknesse from her position, and carried her home, when it was found that a shoulder and leg were dislocated, and it is feared the latter is broken.

wow!  ;D  thank you everybody!

The assisted passage is interesting - obviously something was happening money-wise with him if the obit is anything to go by or that newspaper report that Logan found about him allegedly defrauding.  I wonder if that followed him around and he couldn't get employment as a consequence?

It certainly fits date wise if he remarried to Sarah (and the poor girl with that accident  :o).

I had wondered about the child Augusta as I had spotted her randomly but could never fit her in but looking at her death, she is almost certainly Samuel & Emily's.  She certainly fits in that gap between Frederick & Fransisca which bearing mind the multitude of kids people had then, was a little odd unless there had been a death then.   Augusta is Samuel's mother's middle name.   Emily's family were very fond of triple barrelled christian names as well.

re the baptism Kris found: - I could only ever find the one Samuel J T Thickness being born around 1818-1819 in that area too so I think its definitely him in all the information found.  The fact that his father was an RN is good albeit circumstantial evidence that it was him as Emily's family (including in laws to her siblings) were all in the Navy and Captain Whoever...

the John Sievers could well be mine....I'll do a bit more digging, but anything's possible!  He just disappears off the planet and going to jail could have been an option for his fate!

thank you for the photos as well JM & the information Judith.  I think all in all, until someone says otherwise, its the same family.

I can fill in all the gaps now that you have all found that they hadn't dropped off the earth!!

Thanks again  :)

This is John S W Thickness' son by the look of it - have found the children with mother Elizabeth Ann being born in Berry, NSW and his parents John S W & Nancy in Shoalhaven.

There is another John W married to a Susan A in Bega but it doesn't look like he's mine as John & Susan are having children at the same time as John S W Jnr & Elizabeth.

Hi there,

From your OP,  Her brother John Nicholas Sievers (b.1837) apparently also went to Australia, but he is an absolute blank other than his birth in London and  Logan's possible find  http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13088866

Here's several more cuttings, one giving his origins as Germany and indicating he was not fully conversant with English, plus one has the trial in detail..

NSW State Records do have Gaol Records in their archives, including Gaol Photographs, and full descriptions etc.  http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online/gaol-records/index-to-the-gaol-photographs.  I don't know for certain, but I think (from memory) in the 1860's that chap would have been serving time in Darlinghurst...

Thanks JM.  The Sievers family were Dutch/German and it was either Emily's grandparents or parents that came over.  (I've no access to my tree at the moment as am on different laptop and I can't remember which way it was) but John Nicholas was definitely London born.  I think its some of Emily's aunts and uncles that were born in Germany.

I'll check out Darlinghurst if only to discount him.

Thanks again   :)

a sibling was baptised at the same time as Samuel

THICKNESSE Margaret Susan 7 Jul 1819 Plymouth St Budeaux (Sorry I just noticed I somehow did not include mothers middle name in the baptism entry. She was Sarah Augusta.) She was buried 16 Apr 1821 St Budeaux aged 1 year and 11 months (noted as born 24 May 1819)

There was also an earlier baptism just over the border in Callington Cornwall (quite common with Naval men based in Plymouth)

Emily Sarah Euphemia Sievers was the eldest child of my ancestor Peter Sievers. Peter's ancestry is known on his father's side back to Samuel Chappuzeau born 1625, and beyond. See, for example,

John Nicholas Sievers embarked on the "Caribbean" in London in December 1861, bound for Australia, but is not listed as disembarking anywhere. He was clearly a native English speaker, though his father and uncle were certified translators, having had Dutch parents and also French ancestry. Nothing more is known of him, either before or after this event. (though he is listed in the 1851 census, I believe)

Edward Sievers was a member of the same family. His father, Andrew J Sievers, was a son of John William Sievers, Peter's younger brother. Andrew and his wife emigrated independently of Emily. Edward became Land-Valuer General for NSW. His son Noel was a brillant scholar who was killed in action in WWI

I don't understand a date of 1790 - should that be 1890? Otherwise this is not related.

Ruth - are you a relative of Augusta Thicknesse? Another member of the family in Australia has compiled a 45 page tree of Augusta's family, which may be of interest.

Hi Pavane

thanks for all the info.

I am loosely related to Emily Sievers (Thickness) via a marriage.  My great great grandmother's brother Thomas Fletcher married Elizabeth Wilhelmina Jessie Sievers, Emily's cousin

I've got them pretty much okay backwards, but it was just finding Emily forwards that was causing issue!  ;D

Ah - you are a Fletcher! There are a few of your cousins in touch with us. The PDF file on Augusta is 15 pages, not 44, created by Pattrick Mould.

Hi,
Thomas Fletcher and Elisabeth were my great great grandparents. I'd love to know more about Thomas and his family. My mother told me he was a mariner!

Hi SPMH

Yes, Thomas was a mariner.  He and Elizabeth had 16 (possibly 17) children as far as I can find. Thomas was my great great uncle.  I do have quite a bit of information about them which I'm happy to share.   Which of the children do you "belong to?"  ;D

Hi,

Thomas Fletcher
Daughter Ronella Jane Fletcher (Little Granny)
Daughter Jessie Ronella Roberts (Granny)
Daughter Olga Adeline Steele
Me

I have a lot of information backwards from Little Granny (she was smaller than granny!) but nothing about Thomas Fletcher and his family. It would be wonderful if you could fill me in backwards from him.

My mothers family lived north of Liverpool, but my generation has scattered around the world. My husband and I live near Cheltenham .

Hi

I'll PM you the family as its going a bit off track for the thread, but Thomas and the Fletchers were Liverpool and then the generation back were from Rufford, Lancashire.

Thomas was one of 13 so probably no surprise he had so many kids!  My information about Ronella's  siblings is patchy in places but will PM you know  :)

krisesjoint, If Samuel James Theodore Thicknesse married Sarah Ann Thurston after the death of Emily, when Sarah was widowed by Samuel, she may have married by GG Grandfather, John Everett in 1889 in Newcastle New South Wales.

Although I have a marriage certificate of this event, I'd love to know if they are one and the same people.  If so they went on to have three children themselves.

Thats great thanks! I am attempting to track all descendants of Samuel Chappuzeau (1625-1701), and your family are amongst them

Emily Sarah Sievers was the sister of my g-g-grandmother Ronella Aldina Emma Garner, nee Sievers.
Several other members of the family ended up in Australia, including Edward Johnstone Sievers, who was Land Valuer General of New South Wales, and was responsible for purchasing the land on which Sydney Harbour stands. Edward was a grandson of John William, one of Sarah's brothers.

Pavane mentions E J SIEVERS ... here is his Obituary from the Sydney Morning Herald 16 July 1932  https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/16903557

The V-General found the funds for the purchase of foreshore frontages from Pyrmont to Dawes Point, including The Rocks    ;)  ;)

It seems an amazing coincidence that E.J.Sievers's direct ancestor Samuel Chappuzeau wrote, in 1669, a play called "Les eaux de Pirmont", or "The waters of Pirmont" (a place in Germany).
