Hi
Has anyone come across the surnames Ovenden & Brizenden from Mayfield 1600-1900 if so would love to hear from you?

Hi
I have a Mary Ovenden on my tree, she was born about 1785 Mayfield and married Stephen Humphery 1805 Speldhurst, Kent.
Sadly no records have been found to trace birth and parents.
You may find Brizenden also has a spelling as Brissenden, there seems to be a number of them in Ticehurst.

Hi Suzy
You're in luck. I have a Mary Ovenden bapt. 14 Nov 1784 dau of william Ovenden & Elizabeth Cripps at Mayfield.
William Ovenden married Elizabeth Cripps 21 Aug 1768.
I have traced the Ovendens back a few generations & the Cripps go back to 1500's all in Mayfield & surrounding areas.

Excellent. I have her children if you are interested?
It is the Humphery side that connect to my Fairbrothers, Mary Ovenden would be a sister in-law to one of my ggg grandmothers.

We must be 3rd cousins I'm guessing.
I haven't yet established where the Ovenden's came from prior to 1744 but have a wealth of info to share, not sure how to put it on here though (if it's more than an attachment then I've had it !! )

That's interesting. The date's right for Thomas Brissenden. Is this available online to view or at ESRO?

It is from the East Sussex 1785 Land Tax Publication by Roger Davey, there might be a copy at ESRO, you can still buy copies online.

Hi
I hope this thread is still active. I have Ovenden ancestors in Rotherfield, Mayfield and Withyham from the late 1560s up to the 1750s.
One ancestor William Ovenden (born 1605 in Rotherfield) married Elizabeth Cripps (or Crippes) in Lewes in 1631 by Licence. She was a widow at the time and I think her maiden name may have been Wicken. Unfortunatey I don't know anything about her background yet.

Yes they are on my tree. William Ovenden married Elizabeth Cripps 21 Aug 1768 at Mayfield. Dates are a little different to yours.
Their daughter Mary married Stephen Humphery 26th Sep 1805. Stephen being the son of my gggg grandparents Walter Humphery and Ann Turner.
The name Humphery has many spellings...Humphries, Humfrey etc.

Hi Suzy
There are several William Ovendens in my tree lol! The earliest marriage I have is the Ovenden/Crippes marriage in 1631. Obviously these are not the same people as those who married in Mayfield in 1768 but they may well be related.

Hi
My Ovendens were in Rotherfield and Mayfeild in the 1600s before moving into Withyham in the 1700s. The confusing thing is that there are several people with the same first name and there are also a couple of marriages between cousins.
Thankfully I've managed to look at a lot of Ovenden Wills and these have helped me work out who is who.
I'll post a update with more details on my Ovendens later so you can see what I mean.

Hi,
Coming a bit late to this chat but I thought I would ask if anyone has details for James Ovenden who married Maria Lydia Hickinbottom in 1794 in Westminster London.
Maria was a widow when her daughters married in 1816 and was probably widowed before 1808 and Maria passed away in Ontario Canada in 1846.
On her grave she is decribed as Maria Lydia, Widow of James Ovenden M.A. of Mayfield, Sussex.
So I'm looking for more details on James, who would have been born before 1776 in Mayfield, Sussex.
Thanks, Meretta

Hi Meretta,
The Mayfield general register has the following burial:
16 May 1803 James Ovenden 36 years
I failed to find any baptism for him in the Mayfield register but if he's Maria's husband at least you have more evidence of his year of birth.
Good luck in your research,
Stovepipe
