Title: Forces information
Post by: Welsh lady99 on Thursday 07 October 10 16:26 BST (UK)
I have recently been told my dad served in the army, I have no other information. He was born in 1910 so it would not have been the First World War. In 1946 he was a cobbler. I have checked ancestory and come up with nothing. Any suggestions how I can find out more? :)

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

If your dad was in the army and either married, or had any children during the war, then it would noted in his occupation column on the certificate.

WW2 records are not available online.

His name was George Henry Tomalin born 27 July 1910 in Aston, Deritend, Parents were George Henry Tomalin and Florence Martha Tomalin. He later became a cobbler but one of my cousins remembers an early conversation about my dad following his dad into the army.
Thank you :)

I would suggest that he served between WW1 & WW2 and was probably in the Home Guard during WW2.

My grandfather was about the same age and he too served in the army, but after WW1 (obviously) but he had sadly died before WW2.

I have found that it is those who served between the wars are sometimes the ones who are hardest to find.

Try applying for his records....MOD will still hold them. The SAR form in link above needs to be sent off.

Yes I spotted the £30 non refundable fee. I need to have another conversation with my family member who told me he thought my dad served in the forces, if it seems feasible I will do a search and spend the £30. :)
