Hi, I am researching the family John Murray and Christina Murray married on 22 January, 1874, some of their children were John born 18 July, 1881(my husbands Grandfather); Kenneth born 7 July, 1875; William born 23 June 1879; and Finlay born 5 October, 1890. I found a death notice of a Finlay Murray in 1970 aged 79 years and was wondering if anyone knows of this family and if it was in fact the Finlay born on 5 October, 1890.
They lived at 52 Lower Barvas .
Also the census 1901 shows another list of children of John and Christy Murray at 52 Lower Barvas as Donald, Catherine, Neil, Finlay, Christy Mary and Ann . Wondering if they could be part of the same family mentioned above !?
My husband John Murray is the grandson of the above John Murray born 18 July, 1881 and lives in South Africa.
Does anyone know this family.
regards, Patricia Murray.
South Africa.

Hi Patricia
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Looking at the 1901 census entry, certainly looks like the family has grown to include more children.
Where was the death/notice you found for a Finlay Murray? I found this on http://lewis-canada.blogspot.com/2010/05/murray.html Looks like at least Finlay and brother Neil may have headed off to Canada and enlisted there in WW1:

Finlay arrived via New York on 1 Apr 1912 on the Caledonia. Must have made his way from there through to Canada. He shows as going to a friend, D. L. Murray. Father John was given as next of kin back in Barvas.
A possible entry into Quebec Canada on 10 May 1910 on the 'Cassandra' by Neil Murray.

More that one of the Murray boys look to have headed off to Canada :) I think this may be brother Kenneth and family on the 1911 Canadian census in Edmonton, Alberta, with Neil in the household:
Kenneth Murray 32, inspector, b. Scotland - arrival to Canada shows as 1901
Mannie Murray 31, wife b. Nova Scotia
Wm J Murray 2, son b. Alberta
Neil Murray 23, lodger, labourer, b. Scotland - arrival to Canada shows as 1910
Wills J Adson 29, lodger
Aggie Adson 32, lodger
There is a shipping manifest entry for a Kenneth Murray arriving in Quebec on 2 Jul 1899 on the 'Pomeranian'. There is also on the line above, a William Murray aged 40 travelling to the same destination. So, maybe Kenneth was not Neil's brother but a relative/friend?

Hi, thank you so much for that information, i did not realise that some of them had gone to Canada, so this opens a whole new area of research.
regards Patricia. :)

Hi Monica, could you tell me where you find the ships and travel records. I am fairly new to this research stuff and it takes me ages to find places to look.
You have found such a lot, thank you so much.

Hi Patricia
The shipping manifest details and Canadian census info came from Ancestry.com. You need a subscription to Ancestry to be able access this information. If you don't have a subscription to Ancestry, you can check your local library as some main libraries can have Ancestry Library editions that you could use perhaps.

Hi Patricia
I only usually try and help with Barrhead queries (Renfrewshire) but here goes - although I don't know if it will help.
From Scotlands People there is a birth of a John Murray on 18th July 1881 at Lower Barvas to a John Murray, crofter and a Christina Murray, maiden name McLean. Their marriage date is listed as 22nd January 1874.
Birth registered by Christina Murray (her mark). I have just emailed you the file.
There is a Finlay Murray born 5th October 1890 to the same parents, also from SP.
So they are definitely brothers - whether it is your John Murray - I don't know!
I did access another John Murray in 1881 for Barvas - but different parents. He was born 12th February to a Murdo Murray, fisherman and Mary Murray, maiden name Murray.
Good Luck

Just me again - the Finlay Murray posted by Monica has his birth date as 11th October 1890,
The original record from Scotlands People has his birth date as 5th October 1890 but the day his birth was registered as the 11th October 1890.
Also on the Church of the Latter Day Saints site some one has loaded information about John Murray, who married Christina Mclean - that his parents were William Murray and Catherine Matheson - I haven't accessed the record on SP, so can't confirm. But there are a few children for William and Catherine, including a Donald in 1845;finlay in 1867;william in 1856;catherine in 1862;margaret in 1856; and a john in 1845.
It may be worth a look
Cheers

Hi there,
Yes that is my husbands grandfather born in 1881, parents John and Christina Murray.
I have found most of his brothers and sisters now and believe some of them emigrated to Canada and Neil was killed in the first world war. but there is still lots more to learn.
Grandfather John Murray emigrated to South Africa and married Agnes Wilson also from Scotland, think they married in South Africa but am still searching for that information. Their son Neil William John (my husbands father) was born in Cullinan SA in 1908 and their daughter Jeanie King was born in 1909 at the same place. So i am assuming they were married in SA probably around 1907or1908 i suppose.
I have been in touch with the Wilson relatives in Scotland and they also knew nothing about the Murray family, so are now very happy to be able to fill in the gaps.
thank you for you help, every little bit helps fill in the gaps.
regards Patricia :)

Hi Scottish Lassie, A few years have gone by, lots of changes as we have now left South Africa.
We would love to get in touch with the Murray family from Barvas, but obviously it would be up to them if they would like to connect with the family descendants of John Murray who moved to South Africa.. Thank you for the information that there are relatives still in Scotland or Stornoway.
Patricia Murray.

Were you able to confirm the names and dates of birth/death of the children of John and Christina Murray. John and Christina appear to have been my stepfather's grand parents. My stepfather was Neil J Murray who was the son of Finlay and Jessie Murray of 52 Barvas who also immigrated to Canada in the late 60's settling in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. In reading your thread I can confirm that both Finlay and Neil (sons of John/Christina) were in Canada when WW1 broke out and both enlisted in the Canadian army. As noted, Neil was killed near Vimy Ridge. The family has a very rich history that I started to research following my dad's death late last year. I regret not spending more time with him discussing the family history and hoping you can fill in a few blanks. Thanks.
