Hi Scatty,
first of all a map showing Manor Park area:
http://www.manorpark.homechoice.co.uk/map.htm
who was Arthur James Penfold? was he married?
i know you said you didnt know much about him, is he your own family?
I have some census indexes which cover that area but they are 1851/61 and of course the 1881 is online http://www.familysearch.org/
as is the 1901. http://www.census.pro.gov.uk/
on the 1901 i found several Arthur Penfold's of varying ages.
was Arthurs father a baker i wonder?
i'll see what Penfold's are on my resources.....watch this space :)

i've drawn a blank, i'm afraid Scatty.
no PENFOLD's on my 1851/61 indexes in the area around Ilford,Stratford.
so maybe Arthurs family originated further afield
i also looked on the Vital Records.there are 7 entries for PENFOLD and they are fairly scattered over Sussex, Surrey,Walthamstow etc.
[Sometimes we get lucky and find a cluster of same surname in a certain region]
Like they say, its easier the further back you can go.
Dont give up :) try the common or beginners board [Theres a few experienced bodies to advise you.]

"Glad to say I have made some progress with the Penfolds
Arthur born 1906 was the son of Charles and Eleanor Adelaide nee Bannister.
1901 census has them living in East Ham with Charles junior Arthurs older brother.
Any idea how I can go about finding his grand parents details"
Hi Scatty ;)
