Hi
Can any one tell me if areas of Leek Road Hanley have ever been called or known as anything else. I have not been able to trace my house history as there is no record I can find.
Many thanks
Megan

Hi Megan,
Welcome to roots chat..can you give any more info.. leek road is quite long and on an old 1890 map it was called leek new road, many of the streets were renamed in the 1950's and leek new road was another road altogether.
Some parts were renamed as it followed through different areas
Near to the Hanley end, Winton Terrace, Abbey Road, Abbey Terrace and Trent Terrace all became Leek Road.
I lived on Leek Road Hanley for a while myself.
Perhaps you could give an idea of what period of time you are looking at.
Regards
Bill

Hi Bill
Thanks for the welcome and reply. The area I am trying to research was Joiners Square - the boundary is moved now and the house is near the All Saints Church Hall. The house was built in 1899 and was formally a shop. There is a covenant on it to say alcohol could not be sold from the premises and I wondered if it was anything to do with the church but All Saints was not built until about 1912.

Dear Megan,
If you have any doubts as to weather ALL SAINTS CHURCH still exists,I had to go to Joiners Square last evening and made sure i had the right church ,and yes it is still there .
So is it a particular property that you have an interest in ?if so what number ,I will try and look for you next time i pass down Leek Road ,if that is what you require?
Happy Hunting

Hi Megan
Have not been able to get back to you, because my wife has just come out of hospital.
I certainly know All Saints because my twelve month at Leek Road was staying at the vicarage, no 540 adjoining the church hall.
Am I right in assuming that you still live at Leek Road, as you are researching
house and not family history. If you do not want to give the exact address, could you say whether it is before or after the church hall when travelling from joiner's square and is it on the same side?
I doubt if the alcohol 'ban' would have been from All Saints but may well have been from the Methodists who were strong in the area.
All Saints did have a mission church of St Luke's in the area before the present
Church was built as also did the Methodists or maybe the owner of the land was a strict Methodist.
One of the links below shows the area in 1890 and clearly the Austin street area of Leek Road was inhabited up to near the Church... most of the houses after the church (Stuart Rd area)are a later build.
All Saints was a 'High Church' (nearer to Roman Catholic in its beliefs and even in the early seventies there was a lot of 'rivalry' between them and the
methodists (one reason why I moved on because I was 'speaking to the Methodists')..unbelievable.
Many of the people in that area at the turn of the century were from outside the area drawn by the coal mining and potteries.
Here are a few more interesting links besides the excellent one from yonderpeasant!.....search on the page for Joiner;s Square

(This last link discusses a talk about Joiner's Square' given only a few weeks ago and there is a book about it on sale at the Community Centre.

Hi Bill and Harvo. Thanks for all the information. The section of Leek Road I wanted some history on is the row of terraces opposite All Saints with Franklyn Street one side and Hazelhurst the other. I used to live there and visit the area sometimes so I know it quite well. However, no one seems to know whether that section of Leek Road was called something else. It doesn't show up anything when I search records on Leek Road.
Thank and hope your wife is ok now.

Another Potter here :)
My Great Grandfather lived in Franklyn St which was listed as a part of Hanley in the 1911 census, though I have always known it as Joiners Square

Hi there, I just came across this thread and think I may be able to help a little. I now live in the house which was until approx 4 years ago, still a corner shop as well as a domestic residence. The property was numbered 102 on the 1901 and 1911 census, and the property numbered as 55 also was subject to the same alcohol restriction. The original owners of the shop in the early 1900's was a family by the name of Warrington. I too am most interested to find out as much as possible about the house/area. Please feel free to message me if you want to talk further.

Hi Megan
In the mid 1800's The area around Joiners Square and towards Shelton was I believe called Mousecroft, the area around Joiners Square and towards Abbey Hulton was and still is referred to as Eastwood. Hope this helps.

Hi MrBee, yes that would make sense, seeing as the ward as far as the council is concerned is still known as the Eastwood ward, and other names like Eastwood Road leading down to Hazelhurst Street. I am keen to see any photographs that may exsist of that area, older the better, but all the ones I have found in books etc seem to centre on the potbanks etc instead of Leek Rd itself
