Trying to locate a map reference for Carter St. Manchester .. doesn't appear in modern maps, and can't find any references to it.
My Grandfather was born there in 1899.
From what little I remember him saying, it was in or near Shudehill, possibly a side street in the modern square of Miller St, Corporation St, Danzic St and Hanover.
Gran used to say he was born in the middle of the Coop Bank ... hence the reference.

Hi,
Have a look at this website. If you put Charter Street in the search box, there are quite a few photographs.

Your Gran was correct katesdad, it was a block of back to back houses bounded by Corporation St. Hanover St ,Dantzig St. and Miller St. Carter St,was a street running from Corporation St to a street which bisected the block-- Redfern St after which it became Times St.
.
This is from an 1892 map from the Central Library. If I am allowed to quote the number :- Lancashire Sheet CIV 6 Viktoria.

Viktoria
Thanks a million ! I was pretty sure from what I remember being told ( and what I've seen of Charter St) that they weren't the place. Thanks everyone all the same.
Sounds like I'm on to something.
I'm new to this, any idea how or where I can access the map reference, or is it only available at Mancs Central Library?

I think The Central Library is still closed for repairs. My maps in this series were a present from my son many years ago but they will still be available I am sure but it may depend on when the library is fully open again .
I also feel pretty sure there are copyright rules so I cannot copy them. I`ll see what I can Do. Viktoria.

Hi Katesdad,
Carter Street ran parallel with Hanover Street between Corporation Street and Redfern Street.
Hanover Street, Corporation Street and Redfern Street all still exist.
Not sure if I can post the link but if you enter "British History Online Maps" into your search engine they have maps showing Carter Street in 1892.

Carter street is still there although there are no longer any houses, my father lived in this street. It runs off Julia street near strangeways prison. Here is a link to the 1930 map scroll to right edge look above Victoria station there is a red arrow .
