I am researching my Family. I have found quite alot of names, places and dates, etc. I am very supprised to see there is not much information out there on Italian immigrants in Bristol!
I am aware in my search, most of the Italians were living in the st James part of Bristol around the late 19th and early 20th Century.
My Family were staying in Montague Street as Musicians and Fruit Vendors.
I am hoping to find as much info as possible and find lots of other people with the same interest and in the same position.
Please can anyone post any info on Italian names, addresses, professions and any scanned photo's or pictures, etc from Bristol.
I hope to have a web page in the near future on Bristol Italian Immigrants, if i can get enough information.

Sorry - it's a long time ago & I'm really not sure of the area of Bristol they lived in. One, I'm sure, was Mary, who would have been born c1920. I also knew a Jim Fionda, who lived (in the 1960s) in Horfield. I am sure thay were all regular attenders at St Mary on the Quay - the Catholic church in the heart of Bristol - do you have access to the registers there?

Yes, you would be right about Jim Fionda. Most of the Fionda's and Capaldi's records were at St Mary's on the quay!
Bristol record office holds all the records.

I'm looking into my family history - ARPINO. We believe we have connections with Montague Street (the Ricci's in particular) and we think we are related to the Capaldi's. Any info you have would be great.

capaldis lived no 9 montague street are they of the same family?a mr Ricci was father to my aunt rosina and uncle frank. also capaldis' were friends of uncle johns they went to st.marys on the key church.my grandfathers daughter married a capaldi hence a capaldi/arpino union cant find the paper work (he was the bener...)the brother of granddads we were looking for.I just saw the paper with it on now cant find it!!!!!I I no some di mambos, my dad new bobby fionda they all lived in st.james which was known as little italy.There was the riccis had the grocers shop in montigue street part of the street is still there as are many other streets. my grandfather was marino arpino. will try to find the marriage dates of capoldi/arpino. i also did a mrs capodis hair they lived either henleaze or filton. Hope this helps. and hope you see this posting as i cant reply yet on the main board.

Hello Grace, yes my Family of Capaldi's lived at 9 Montague Street and were very friendly with the Fionda Family. Most of the Fionda's moved to Detroit, USA. All of my Capaldi Family went and were Married/Baptised in the st Marys on the quay Roman Catholic Church. Giovanni Capaldi and Pasqua Rosa Salera were married, living in Montague Street, and along with there Children they went from Street Musicians, to Fruit Vendors. Maybe they worked along side the Ricci Family?
Marino Arpino married Charlotte Parsons. We also have links to alot of Parsons!
Do you know if Marino was related to Maria Antonia Arpino or her Father Benedetto??

My descendants were Italian Immigrants who all lived in Bristol at one time or another.
There were 3 brother's who came from Tuscany, taly, who were all Plaster Figure Makers.
1. PELLEGRINO MAZZEI (1811-1869). Lived in Bristol in the 1850's - firstly at Horse Fair (St. James) then after his marriage in 1852 he lived at 13 Terrel Street.
He moved to London in about 1859 and after his wife's death in 1864 he lived with his younger brother in Cardiff before dying in Bridgend Lunatic Asylum in 1869.
2. GIOVANNI MAZZEI (1813-1872) - He lived in Bristol in th 1850's and 1860's firstly at Broad Weir, and then at 2 Tippett's Court, Horse Fair. He died in Bath in 1872.
His widow moved back to Bristol, and in 1881 and 1901 she is in the Workhouse in Stapleton.
Their son, George Edward Mazzie lived at 32 Eugene Street, St. James.
2 of his sons were killed in WWI and are mentioned on the Plaque at St. Mary-on-the-Quay.
His descendents still live in Bristol but with the surname changed to Mazzie.
3. FERDINANDO ROBERTO MAZZEI (1819-1904) He lived in Bristol in the 1840's / 1850's living at 16 West Street, St. James in 1849, and 13 St. James Back in 1851.
Later in 1851 he lived at Tabernacle Row, St. Paul's, before moving to 10 Horse Fair.
He moved to Cardiff by 1858 and died there in 1904.

I have been looking at some of the records, and Giovanni might have married twice.
I found a Giovanni marriage in Bath 1843 and a John (giovanni) in Bristol 1852?
I have also seen Pellegrino's marriage in 1852 Bristol. I can not find any Ferdinando only a Frederick marriage in Cardiff 1876 and death in 1906?

Hi Jamie,
I have Giovanni's first marriage (Bath 1843 to Mary Carpenter).
She died in Holborn in 1846.
Giovanni married a second time in Brsitol 1852 to Mary Ann Moffatt.
They had 7 children - 5 of whom died young.
One of them, Mary Magdalen Mazzei died aged 13 in Bristol Infirmary in 1866, and the newspaper reports that she died after drinking Port Wine and eating cheese given to her in ignorence by her mother.
Ferdinando married in 1847 in Wetminster to Mary Murphy, but his name is given as Fredrick Matza.
Most of the records of him refer to him as Frederick.
The Frederick who married in Cardiff in 1876 was Ferdinando's son.
2 of Ferdinando's grandsons were also killed in WWI-
Louis Mazzei;
Alfred Mazzei.
And 3 of his Gt-Grandchildren were killed in WWII:-
William John Mazzei;
Alfred Monaghan;
Terence O'Keefe.
(Alfred and William were both killed together in Normandy).

My great grandfather was Pietro Pinchera. Originally from Cassino, Italy, he followed a girl he loved when her family moved, presumably from Cassino, to the UK. They were married in early 1903 in Bristol. I don't know her maiden name, but her American name, when they moved to the U.S. in 1909, was "Susi."
They had numerous children, including Albert, Rose and (my grandfather) Pasquale Rocco.
Does this timeline fit in with the Pietro Pinchera you're researching?
I don't suppose you know of a Maria Assunta Ricci, who married a Pietro Pinchera in Bristol??

Just discovered that yes, my great grandparents were indeed Assunta "Susi" Ricci and Pietro Pinchera. They were married in Bristol and had a total of 6 children.
Do you have any info about the parents of either Assunta Ricci or Pietro Pinchera...both originally from the Cassino area?
I don't suppose you know of a Maria Assunta Ricci, who married a Pietro Pinchera in Bristol??

I'm only just related to Gabriele Bellisario (he's the father-in-law of my first cousin twice removed ::)!) but I think he settled first in Bristol when he came over. He certainly married there in 1859 and his first son Luigi Garibaldi Bellisario was born there in 1860 (and died in 1861). The family moved to Sheffield and eventually to Cardiff.
I've seen a couple of newspaper announcements of his marriage and son's birth in Bristol papers but I've no idea when he arrived in UK or how long he was in Bristol. Thought I'd mention him though

My paternal 2nd great aunts are...Assunta Ricci and Maria Santa Ricci. Their father is Bambino Ricci and mother Filomena Di Cienzo.
