Title: McGhee AWOL from Scotland to Canada
Post by: anabanana on Saturday 23 October 10 08:40 BST (UK)
Trying to trace William McGhee who according to family lore, flitted to Canada and left his wife and young children behind in Scotland.

He was born in 1868 in Port Glasgow to parents Patrick McGhee and Margaret Reilly.

William married Mary Fitzgerald and had three children (that I know of) and last we know of him is his appearance with his family in the 1901 census at Adelaide St in Inverkip, Gourock, Scotland.

He was a seaman/ships plater to trade.

The story goes that he sent money back to the family for a short time, then nothing.  And he was meant to have died in Montreal (perhaps) pre 1921 seemingly.

Has anyone got Any thoughts on how we might find a death certificate, and see what really happened to him?

Regards,

A

You would have to have more information before you would write to the Government in Quebec City for a death registration. I looked at the Montreal city directories (online) and there was a W J. McGee, accountant, living at 36 Souvenir Ave. from approximately 1917 to 1926 and thereafter. I doubt if this is your man. But in the 1921 directory ONLY is a W.G. McGhie, elect. eng. Apt. 2, 105 Chomedy St.
There is also a William McGhie, age 23 arriving on the ship Hesperian from Scotland 15 Aug 1909 and (it appears to be the same person) arriving again  as William McGhee, age 25, from Scotland, 23 May 1910 on same ship.  Since you said that he was a seaman, this may be him?? The age is wrong, though.  Just a guess. Not sure where else to direct you for help.

Civil Registration did not start in the Province of Quebec until 1995.  Everything prior to that is Parish Records.

The Drouin Collection which is parish records for the Province of Quebec is availabe at www.ancestry.ca
