Hi there,
Just came across your post. I have been desperately searching for an ancestor of mine called Catherine Milne who was born in India (1857-62).. unfortunately that's about all the information I have. I have seen the name Eugenia Catherine Milne with only 3 years difference and am wondering if that is her. It would be good to find a way to know for sure, though I'm guessing that would be tricky.

This might help with employment:

There is a possibility that, assuming he served in India, there will be papers at the East India Office collection at the British Library. Also on the BL website is a database of BMD and occasionally brief biographies of British residents of India.

Hi,
Yes, she's in the 1891 & 1901 Scottish Census (Dundee). In the 1891 census she is under the name Kate Milne, 'Where born: British Subject, India. Two children, Alice & Annie (Annie is my ancestor).

Your Kate/Catherine Milne was a widow so you would need to find her maiden name. Have you got the children's birth details?

I didn't find out that she was a widow - where can I find that?

I have Annie Milne's birth cert - says she is illegitimate, so I assumed Catherine Milne was unmarried?

It's in one of the 1901 transcriptions. Not the one on Ancestry. Perhaps get Alice's birth certificate?

Oh I couldn't find Alice's correct birth cert, I paid for one that I thought fitted but turned out it wasn't hers (mother was called Ann). Any tips on how to find the right one.. or where to go from here please?

Kate is also a widow in the 1891 transcription from the same source.

So you got the cert for the Alice Milne born 1882 in Dundee?

Hi, yes the 1882 Birth Cert for Alice, states mother as Ann. So another red herring.

Could you tell me where the source is for widow? I haven't managed to find that. It doesn't mention it on the 1881 Scottish census, but am not looking at the original.

Just for interest, Christiana Agnes's surname from her wedding entry looks like Lantour - he father is given as Lewis Lantour.

There's a death for a Lewis Lantour in the India Deaths in 1833 aged 36 and one for another daughter Lydia A aged 8 11/05/1835.

Thanks all for your replies - sorry for delay in responding - seem to have been logged out and didn't get notified of your interest!

Yes lots of confusion on spellings, but I'm fairly certain Christiana Agnes is a Latour daughter of Louis Latour.

At marriage of Christiana Agnes and John Milne her father is listed as Lowis Latour. Seems to be other variations but Latour is the name that has come down the family in subsequent generations.

I have bad some luck now in putting most of this tree together and it all looks to fit quite nicely. Just trying to trace further back but as is a frequent story I have hit the dreaded brick wall!

Thanks again.
