Title: Missing connection to Bouch family
Post by: esdel on Monday 25 October 10 16:49 BST (UK)
When I was 7 my mother (Elsie Marshall) said
"We are related to Sir Thomas Bouch
and your gt gt grandfather was captain of sailing ships"
The captain bit is true - indeed the Bouch has ship ownership interests with Sproule.
But NEVER have I found the Marchall- Bouch connection.
Sir Thomas's direct descendants are few, and the time too short, so I think "related" is the correct word, not descended from.

Sir Thomas b 22 Feb 1822 at Thursby, died 1880 at Moffat
Parents William and Elizabeth Sanderson
Wife Margaret Ferrie Nelson

Grandparents Richard Bouch & Mary Barwise, Robert Sanderson & Ann Simpson

Can you help me find any connection from them to the
Marshall
Rochester
Turnbull
Ramsey
Newby
Dawson
Hudson
Robson
families?

Many thanks

This Seafaring Family nearly had me on Prozac!
There were three in the family named Lancelot Bouch.

The Elder who appeared to have originated from Clifton? Died 28th Sept 1830.
Then there was Captain L Bouch Master of the Westmoreland out of Whitehaven, he then owned/sailed The Aimwell, Ardent and Grecian. Owned about 200 Acres at Clifton, built Bellevue at Distington.
Daughter - Elizabeth Bouch Spinster and Sister Mary Ann Died 15th April 1911. Lived in Elizabeth St Workington. Servants and left £6,000.

Sorry its a bit scrappy just bits on scribbled paper when I did the history of the house.

Oh Jeff I know exactly what you mean!
But the info you have found is GREAT.

Yes 6 Lancelot Bouch and hundreds of John.
I have to take a rest every half hour.Scrappy? - you should see my notes!

Nearly all you have found is NEW:-
<<The Elder who appeared to have originated from Clifton? Died 28th Sept 1830.

This is all great stuff and I have the framework we can attach it to.
The Bouch family are heavily involved in shipping - the father of Sir Thomas Bouch (William b abt 1779) being a sea captain and William Bouch (Sir Thomas's brother) marrying Jane Sproule of the brokerage and ship owning family.
They made vast wealth trading on their own account with US and Australia and maybe with the East India Company.
I have some of the ships if you are interested - but I expect you are just helping me (which I appreciate very much!)

I suspect your 3 Lancelot may be the link between the family branches.
But my Lancelot are much earlier:-
L B b 1777 chr 2 Feb Brigham Cumberland
son of
L B b 1750
and brother of William B chr 6 Mar Brigham

The other two L B I know a bit more about:-
L B b 1735 married Ann Stamper; their children:
Robert B 1785 died 1800
John B 1774 + Mary Hey had daughter
Hannah Bouch chr 10 Apr 1800 Thursby

LB 1720 + Alice Pot (married 1744 Bromfield)
son Robert 1751 chr Dec ST Bees
William 1749 chr 11 Nov St Bees Cumberland
Catherine 1748 chr Apr Bromfield

Your Mary Ann and Elizabeth B, sisters, I may be able to locate if you know their Birth dates

Many thanks for helping
esdel

I am seeking information about the capture of the Ardent, Captain Bouch, in the Mississippi River in May,  1811 for the violation of the U.S. Non Intercourse act. The vessel was sold at auction in New Orleans after a court trial. I am writing a book that mentions this incident. Any personal information on Captain Bouch and the loss of the vessel would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Sorry, I have no more information beyond what is above.
The Bouch and Sproule families intermarried and were ship owners and Captains for several generations
The second endest of the Lancelot Bouch mentioned above did own/sail the Ardent, among other ships.
Any info you can find would be very welcome here!

A good source of info is the newspapers of the time - especially ports of arrival such as in Australia, but these usually say just "Captain Bouch"

Elizabeth and her sister are buried at Clifton, have a photo of stone will try to find.

In the Whitehaven Record office there are leather bound ship details, date of launch. owners etc, some have details of the demise pinned to the back of these documents - these volumes are known as TR3s.

As this Lancelot Bouch captained (owned?)
The Westmoreland
The Aimwell
The Ardent
The Grecian

and was not the only captain Lancelot Bouch alive at the time, we should make sure he was in command at the time of this arrest.
What happened to him as a result?
I have no death date for him

One I do have a death date for is
Lancelot Bouch son of Lancelot Bouch.
He was chr 2 Feb 1777 at Brigham, Cunberland
and died 9 Aug 1832
His brother was William

Hi Esdel

My grandmother was called Dorothy Bouch-Hissey.

I am not sure if her christened name was Dorothy, and I think her name had been hyphenated by marrying John Hissey.... Not sure but can check with family if you are interested.

My grandmother told me that she was a direct decedent of Sir Thomas Bouch. She was either his daughter or grand daughter.

When I was younger she gave me a cast iron model train with Sir Thomas Bouch written on it. It was obviously a commemorative thing that he was given through his railway work. It was about one and a half feet long and was really heavy.

She also talked about his death and that he died of a broken heart after the Tay Bridge disaster. She always maintained that the builders didn't build to his designed and he took the blame for the tragedy unjustly. Research tells me she was probably wrong.

I found your post when I was attempting to see if I could find the model train she gave me which was stolen from me about 30 years ago. As was a stamp album that my uncle put together before he was tragically killed in the Second World War.

I would dearly love to find out more about our family tree so would be very happy to here back from you with anything about the Bouch Family, especially children so I can confirm Dorothy as either daughter or grand daughter of sir Thomas Bouch.

I also believe we have a family Crest somewhere with is from this line of the family.

Many thanks
