I have just found an ancestor in Portland Prison in 1901. He was born in Hull in 1849 and from various docs I know he also lived in Liverpool (1871), Skipton, Warton near Lancaster (1881) and Hindley (near Wigan) in 1891.
Can anyone help with how and why he ended up at the other end of the country in prison?
