Starting with the 1911 census entry- says married 12 years so c1899 or 1898 probably. Although 9 children are listed there seems to have been another child that had died before the census. Note that 14 is the number of the household on that particular census form and not the street number for the building.
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Kiltamagh/Cordarragh__Thomas_Street/739120

And here's the family in 1901-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Kiltimagh/Pound_Street__Kiltimagh/1597615

Irish marriage certificates list only fathers' names and occupations (not mothers' names) but by searching for each in civil registration index and cross-referencing results you should hopefully be able to find the details needed to order the certificate. See Introduction to Irish Records-

Hello Mick
I may be able to help you with your requests with regard to the Farrell family of Co Mayo
(in fact it lit seems we are related)
James and Catherine Farrell are my grandparents on my mother's side
My mother was Mary Josephine Farrell (then Hindle) who came to Bradford from Ireland and married my Dad - Harry Hindle
So your Dad was  my mother's brother and my uncle Pat

Welcome to Rootschat  :) Mick hasn't been online since 2016 and his registered email address isn't working so he may not see your reply although it's difficult to tell if he's still interested in the topic since he never responded to my earlier post. Since that time there are lots of new Irish resources online, many of them free, so do let us know if you need help finding information or advice.

Thanks for your prompt reply
And thanks for the early Irish Census information
It brought a lump to my throat seeing the actual document written by my grandfather (who died long before I was born) and seeing my mother listed as a six month old baby
I am curious to know how most of the Farrell children ended up in an orphanage in Sligo (Banada Convent near Tubbercurry)
It would appear that Grandad,  James Farrell and Grandmother,  Catherine must have both died within a very few years of the 1911 Census and within a short while of each other
I am aware that that period of Irish history was one torn by conflict and I did wonder if the events are related?
Where could I begin?

Just in case there's a connection- a James Farrell, cooper, died 1931- he's a widower but can't see a likely death for Catherine in same registration district-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1931/04902/4328820.pdf

Daughter Delia Farrell born 1900-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1901/01961/1756831.pdf

1911 census says married 12 years, had given birth to 10 children but one had died. Poor woman was probably exhausted!

Wow !  I'm overwhelmed with replies - thanks very much - but links from yourself and hallmark send me to the Irish Genealogy site which shows me a blank screen and asks me to solve a captcha (whatever that may be)

Try refreshing that screen and you should see a square divided into blocks- click on the boxes it's asking for, fill in you first & last name then check the agreement box and images should appear  :)

There are two screens you must get past in order to see the results.
On the first one tick the box (I've circled in red)
This is sometimes enough other wise follow instructions.
Second screen put in you own name and tick the box (I've circled in red) than click submit

It's security to ensure you're a genuine person and not a "bot" or something harmful. Sometimes, if I 've been on that site for a while, I'm asked to do another test to show it's still me who's using the site.

If the death I found for a James Farrell, cooper, in 1931 is correct one then perhaps it was only the mother who died when the children were young. In that case James was probably unable to look after such a large family on young ones and the family were split up.
Would be nice to find death for Catherine Farrell to fill in more of the family story. Perhaps she died away from home.
Do you know when children went to Banada Convent and their names? I'm wondering if perhaps some died young and/or were taken in by relatives or friends.

This is probably not Nora's death, living Carrowkeel, Bohola.

1911 shows John and Bridget Farrell in Carrowkeel. They have a daughter, ‘Onnie’ born 1913 who may be Nora  :-\

Once again I am overwhelmed at the time and effort of the various posters helping me in this  endeavour
At this point then, we have twelve children, and to the best of my knowledge,  many of the young girls ended up in Banada convent (Abbey) in Co. Sligo (not a very nice place to be by all accounts - and certainly according to my mother!)
Of the family that I know  -  Uncles Tom and Pat and my mother  Mary and Auntie Mag (Margaret and possibly Nora) came to live in Bradford.
Annie (Anna Maria) and Agnes went to live in Leeds.  Agnes was the youngest and survived until just a few years ago (and remained single all her life) Annie returned to Tourlestrane (Banada) and married the local cobbler (Jim Fleming) quite  late in life.   I used to go down and visit her at weekends when I was working in Derry
I gather the Sisters of Mercy (the Order that looked after the children) have retained the records for Banada and that will be my next stop
My best wishes to all those that have proven so unstinting in their help

There are actually 14 children - the 13 I listed earlier and one who, according to 1911 census, died before 1911. Still trying to find Catherine's death which must have been 1914 or later...

She’s difficult to find, isn’t she.

Presumably, it was the younger girls who were sent to the industrial school.
I wonder if Catherine developed poor physical or mental health and also went to an institution.
Title: Re: farrell family
Post by: ChristopherH on Thursday 04 January 18 22:37 GMT (UK)
Yes -  My Mam always quoted 14 but two died of course
But still - 14 kids!  they don't make women like that anymore
I recall visiting auntie Annie in Tourlestrane one time - I had arrived by car and was driving down the lane to her house (about 1/2 mile from the shop)  - she had a stone of spuds on her shoulder and a full bag of groceries in the other (aged 80!) And all the women of the Farrell family were under 5ft !
So as my friend above suggests - it would not be surprising to discover
that Grandma Catherine suffered some permanent health issues as a result and
became institutionalised
Perhaps the good Sisters can throw some light on the situation?
I'll keep you all posted

Some of the relatives and neighbours must have known at least a bit of what happened to the Farrell family. Have you checked with all possible living relatives in case anyone remembers being told or overhearing anything?

Wonder if tracking down connections of the Brennans or Farrells might lead to more details. If you do contact the Convent for information it probably wouldn't hurt to stress that for medical reasons you are looking for details of what happened to Catherine as you've been unable, so far, to find a death record.

found that someone had suggested sending for their records by contacting the Sisters of Charity, so I sent them a quick mail. I got a reply back saying I needed to write to

Sr Christina Gorman, Sisters of Charity, Mary Aikenhead House, St. Mary's, Donnybrook, Dublin 4 to request the records.

I'm suspicious about DOB (19th Dec. 1909)  of Margaret Mary Farrell, number 8 on list in reply #24. Mary Josephine, number 9, came hot on her heels on 26th Sept. 1910. Margaret Mary's birth wasn't registered until March. How long was the maximum time between birth and registration then?
Title: Re: farrell family
Post by: hallmark on Saturday 06 January 18 06:51 GMT (UK)
It was necessary to pay a fee to register a birth. This was beyond the means of many poorer families and as such a birth could go unregistered.

You were fined if a birth was registered late. In order to avoid the fine, some parents gave an incorrect date of birth for the child so that it fell within the period of registration. This means that a child that was 6 months old could be given a date of birth making them only 2 months old.

It was the responsibility of the parish priest or minister to register marriages. In some cases the priest failed to register the event.

It is estimated that up to 30% of deaths in Ireland went unregistered, even in the 20th century.  It is not uncommon to find a death was not registered with the civil authorities.

There is a marriage for Margaret Farrell to George Steward in Bradford. Christopher mentions that Margaret was one of the siblings in Bradford.
Death of Margaret Mary J Steward in 1981 shows a DOB of 19th December 1909.

I am trying to track down a the family of a Paddy Farrell who married Peggy Coghlan.  That had at least two sons Patrick (Born 1825) and a younger brother named Frank. Patrick married a Dorthea Flemming 16 March 1863 before going to America, Frank was married and had a daughter named Maria before going to America.

I am trying to find out if Paddy and Peggy had any other children.

Any help would be appreciated.
