There is another web page that lists online editions of Naval Chronicle at:
The Naval Chronicle (http://historicnavalfiction.com/index.php/general-hnf-info/naval-facts/the-naval-chronicle)
The Naval Chronicle records some of the exploits and appointments for the period 1799 to 1817.

Hi
I saw your list.
Would you know where sons of gentlemen went to school around 1840 in order to go into the RN later?
I have Henry Charles Young born 1830 in Suffolk. He was a midshipman in the late 1840's according to the census. He did not go to the school his brothers went to. He went into the RN.
Would there be a special school for boys as in Cadets perhaps in the 1830-1840's or did they put them on ships right away?
How young would they be to be on the ships?
I have not been able to find his service record.
He retired in NZ after 1851. I assume he was still in the RN when he went to NZ.
Can you point me to any web pages at all about my questions?
Thank you for your time and help.
Hera
Are you related to Plowman's in Suffolk?

Hi
In most instances during this period, a Midshipmans appointment required a degree of patronage, usually from a family member or friend. Midshipmen were as young as 14-16, but were sometimes entered even younger and rated as Captain's Servant.
The formal training of officers did not start until 1863, at what was to become BRNC Dartmouth. Since the Navy only provided board and lodging to Midshipmen, they were free to leave at any time. The problem with Midshipmen is that because they were not Commissioned the do not feature in the Navy List until they passed as Lieutenants, which required a minimum of 7 years service before they could sit the Board.
For the sons (and daughters) of Warrant Officers, the Greenwich Naval College was available. However, if a boy entered the navy via this route he usually entered as a Mates Assistant, having already received extensive training at Greenwich.
Re the records of your man, there is a Service Record for a Henry Charles Young, Naval Cadet in ADM 196 (available online), but the time frame is a bit loose, so it might be another man.

Thanks for the lists I found my missing ancestor Caleb Emerson but spelt Emmerson on several naval lists he was an assistant surgeon and surgeon. Would you know whether he could have become a surgeon through the navy or would he have had to go to surgeon college I can't seem to find him there.
retards Lynne :) :) :) :) :) :)

Cant find my guy, he was a Seaman in 1841, John Masson.

You wont find your man in the Navy Lists unless he was an officer. I tried the National Archives website 'Registers of Seamens Service' and the main catalogue for a pension application without any luck.
If you knew the name of a ship he served on, it is possible to piece together his career.

The Navy List only gives details of Commission Officers and Warrant Officers of Wardroom Rank (Surgeons, Pursers, Masters and Chaplains). The latter group be "commissioned" in the mid 1800s I think.

Hi There,
Not a very good advert but I had a Great Uncle who trained and served in the Royal Navy called Herbert John Langmaid, born 10 January 1891 in Cornwall. On his training record it states that he would not learn how to swim, it is also a family known 'fact' that he was always afraid that he would drown. Anyway he jumped ship in 1913, in or near New York, USA and I would love to find out from what ship, when exactly and if there were any records of this matter. He was eventually caught and given the option of returning to the RN or joining the American Armed Forces, he chose the later and served in France, obtaining his American naturalisation. Any information would be most appreciated.

If you purchase his service record, which is downloadable, this will have his last ship shown with an 'R' against his name i.e. 'run'.

Thanks for that Martin, also good to know that it is termed 'Run' and not 'Jumped Ship'. Will have to think about the fee to just get a ships name. Thanks very much though at least I have a number and reference. Brilliant.
Cheers

There has been a reduction in the fees. It used to be £3.50 now it is £3.30 per downloadable document.
-
Thanks for that Stephen, obliged.

I already had that document, that is the one which says he was trouble as he would not learn to swim. Its his training record, not the ship on which he was when he 'Ran' in NY. Not to worry.
Thanks

Would Merchant Marines be listed with the Royal Navy in 1840-1850's ? I do not know anything about the military.
Thank you,
Hera

Stephen,
What a fantastic effort! Thank you very much. The list of Feb 1843 has revealed an additional posting for one of my Navy ancestors that was not recorded on his service record!!
There was also a Navy List published in November 1843 - no. XVI.
