Hi Jaz,
Could it be that Henry has also died both these dates seem to tie in with the 1871 census found by Isobelruss
Deaths

Martha CARTWRIGHT age 34 (1839)
Mar q 1879 Newport M
Henry CARTWRIGHT age 43 (1836)
This looks as if it could be their daughter Ada in 1881

Ada CARTWRIGHT Niece 16 ( 1865) Abershychan, Monmouth Dressmaker
can't find Herbert bn 1862 or Laura CARTWRIGHT bn 1868 in 1881
It appears that Henry CARTWRIGHT married Martha GAUNLETT Mar q 1861 Pontypool they should be together on 1861 census as that census was taken on 7th April
**ADDED**
It does appear that the 1881 census with Ada as niece is the daughter of your Henry & Martha CARTWRIGHT.

Hello all!
Has anyone been able to establish Henry Cartwright's parents? I have a Henry Alexander Cartwright b.1836 in Kington, Herefordshire; parents: Alexander Cartwright and Elizabeth née Pugh. I am a descendants of Alexander Cartwright's sister. I'd like to know if the Henry in this thread is the same person :)
(this added later):
I've found that there's an Alexander Cartwright who died in 1853 in Pontypool, and an Elizabeth Esther Cartwright who died in Pontypool as well in 1847. Could they be by any chance Henry's parents and the parents of the Henry Alexander Cartwright I have on my tree?
Penny for your thoughts!
Best regards!

Hi
Being local to the risca area I know that Henry Cartwright and his son Herbert both died in 1878 in the prince of Wales colliery disaster. This is recorded in the register published of deaths. If you want more info let me know.

Hi all,
Looking again at the records, I have pinned down three Henry Cartwrights born at the right time in Herefordshire. These are:
1. Thomas Henry Cartwright, bap. August 1835 Leominster, son of John and Mary Ann Leominster. He became a watchmaker. He is listed in 1851 in Leominster with his parents; in 1861 with his wife Elizabeth in Cirencester, in 1871 in St Peter's, Hereford; in 1881 in Horninglow, Staffordshire with wife Elizabeth. Then he turns up again in 1901 in prison, in Princetown, Devon (he is listed as being single, but his profession confirms this is the same as above).
2. Henry Cartwright, bap. April 1834 Leominster, son of Harry and Jane Cartwright.
3. Henry Alexander Cartwright, bap. 1836 Kington, son of Alexander and Elizabeth Cartwright.
The coal miner from Herefordshire who relocated to Wales appears in the 1851 census with the Davies family, accompanied by another lodger called William Cartwright, who is 8. This is consistent with what I have found about Henry Alexander's family, who had a younger brother called Philip William Cartwright (b.1843), who died aged 12 in Pontypool reg. district.
Henry [Alexander] Cartwright then married Martha Gauntlett in 1861 and seemingly died in the late 1870's in the mining disaster mentioned by EstherFawke.
EstherFawke, could you provide further information about this event? If what I say above is correct then Henry and his son Herbert are my distant relatives and the one Jaz was looking for in the first post of the thread :)
Best wishes,
Cimbrio

There is a newspaper article on the Welsh Newspapers site, about the Abercarne colliery disaster, naming a Henry Cartwright and his son Herbert as possibly killed and still in the Mine at the time, is this your man, if so this link will be handy. http://welshnewspapers.llgc.org.uk/en/page/view/3440373/ART140/%20Cartwright

Perhaps Jaz has the 1861 marriage certificate for Henry Cartwright & Martha Gauntlett
