Are my ancestors. I have them marrying at Greenock in 1826. First child, my ancestor Janet Anderson Haig Sharp was baptised at Rothesay in 1828, second child Flory in 1830 and nothing more anywhere. My ancestor Janet Sharp married in Kilmadock in 1849. I believe from her marriage certificate, her father was a sea captain and otherwise a mariner of Bute. But I cannot find anything else about this family. Does anyone have any clues as I think Janet was raised by others in Kincardine by Doune. I am in New Zealand and this mystery is waiting to be solved. Karen

Hi Karen
Have come across this 1841 census entry:
Alex Duncan 35, House Carpenter Journeyman
Elizabeth Duncan 6
Robert Duncan 2
Mary Sharp 15
William Sharp 14, Tinsmith Ap
Janet Sharp 12
William Brown 40 Merchant Seaman
Address: Lade Side Street, Rothesay Bute
As you say, it may be something happened to parents and they were looked after by another family in their early years.
Monica :)
Added: Don't think the above entry can be connected to your Janet. This entry shows in 1851 with the above Janet (Jessie is a variant of this name) and by 1851 your Janet had married:
William Brown, fisherman b. Bute
Mary Sharp, niece b. Bute
Jessie Sharp, niece b. Bute
Address: 37 Gallowgate St, Rothesay

Hi there. Thanks for the census information. However I believe my Janet was the eldest child and there are two older in this 1841 census return. I don't think this is going to be easy. Robert Sharp is a mystery man. I appreciate your help. Kind regards from hot and sunny NZ. Karen
