I am hoping to make contact with a researcher who has an interest in the RENTON family of St. Helena Island, late 1700s - 1830s. Ann Renton (b. St. Helena) married William Henley (or Hindley). Ann Renton was daughter of James & Sarah Renton. William Henley (Hindley) was born Astley, Lancashire, and was a soldier in the St. Helena Artillery. William returned to England with his family in early 1830s.
I have plenty more information on this family.
Is anyone there ..... ?
Sincerely - Margaret

Hi Margaretmarion
Just an afterthought, did any of your Rentons go on to settle, near Durban, South Africa?
In the 1960's - 1970's, a father and son were doctors ???
Cheers

Hi Danchaslyn - I do not know what happened to the Rentons (except, of course, Ann Renton who married William Henley/Hindley). There was a James Renton who was a shopkeeper on the island and also James Renton who was a soldier. Whether they were the same person, I do not know.
Thank you very much for your interest - I do appreciate it.

Hi Margaretmarion
Dr Harry Renton and his wife Norah Renton, lived in Westville, near Durban and were lifelong friends of Winifred Grace Aitken, eldest daughter of Rev Thomas Aitken, who, as I said, after he left Scotland, (1890's?) went to St Helena, as the Baptist Prison Chaplain, then onwards to the Cape.
Dr Harry was a gynae and on top of their lifelong friendship, Win in her later years worked for him. His son also a doc, practiced in Durban. As far as I know, Win was one of the children born to Rev Thomas born on the Island.
Renton was an unusual surname in Natal, South Africa at that time. I personally met the Rentons all as a child.
Cheers

My Rentons were in the island before 1800. I do not know where they were from - either the UK or St. Helena.
I am going to ask the Archivist on the island for some help.
Many thanks - Margared

Hi Margaretmarion
Have some contact info for your research on your relatives on St Helena, Karen Henry, Archivist, but apparently, there is a charge, the minimum being £21 and timed/charged at £1.50 per hour. :-[
Also, the website, sthelenaonline.com should be able to assist.
Best of luck

St. Helena Island, South Atlantic. Soldiers and families of the St. Helena Artillery (East India Company) and St. Helena in general. Could you let me know, please, which page I should use on "Rootschat"? Surnames: Renton & Henley (possible Hindley).
Many thanks - Margaretmarion

Not sure why you keep asking where posts for St. Helena belong but I've merged your latest query with the existing posts you've already made.

I don't know if you are a member of facebook, but there is quite a big St Helena following on there, if you pick wisely, someone over there might be able to help.
My uncle has lived there for over 30 years, 2 of his daughters are back in the UK now and are in constant contact with the island. Unfortunately I'm no longer in contact with him otherwise I'm sure he would have done the lookups for you as he was the one who started my off on this family history lark!

;) ;)Many thanks for the replies.
I am now in touch with St. Helena.
Again, Rootschat friends have been a great support ;D

Hello :)
In the past year I have been researching my family on St Helena island from the late 1600s to the early 1830s. Joseph Alesworth married Mary Clough on St Helena in 1801. I am under the impression that her widowed mother Sarah Clough married the widower James Renton.
I have been through all the St Helena BMD records and have found some interesting information on the Cloughs. I wonder if you have any further information of James Renton.
