Hi Christine,
No I haven't yet found them.
Do you have any connection with this family?
I have been helping my wife,Judy, with her family background so she would be most appreciative of any help.
Kind regards,

Hi Don,

Not that I know of but I have a great interest in anyone with the name Frater or varients of it.
Its very interesting that you have a Isabella Frater/Fraiter I believe she may be a sister of my John Frater/Fraiter/Fratter who was born abt 1776 in Denholm,Cavers,Roxburgh and died 25 Feb 1838 Bulls Hugh, Selkirk. If this is the case fathers name is John Fraiter and mother unknown as yet. Frater is not really that popular of a name so when ever it crops up I like to see where it goes or comes from.

I have had a bit of a look in all the data I have on Frater's and can not find a marriage for your Charles and Isabella.  How ever I did find the children you mentioned:

Robert Stewart b. 01/08/1811
John Stewart b. 14/03/1820
Margaret Stewart 14/07/1815
Isabel Stewart 07/10/1817
Elizabeth Stewart 05/12/1813

I also believe that Jean may be one of their children altho on the register is says Father Charles Stewart and Tibby Fraiter( I think that may be a misprint or misspelt or a nick name ) something to keep in mind anyways.
Jean Stewart 21/06/1823

The reason for my interest is that my surname is also Frater :) Will be interesting to find a marriage for Charles and Isabella.

Warmest Regards
Christine

Thanks for the reply Christine. Much appreciated.
If the IGI is to be believed it shows the children as mentioned, to be born between 1811 and 1820 to Charles Stewart and Isabel Fraiter. The IGI suggests that Isabel
was born about 1790 in Catslack now, Yarrow and died before 1861."Tibby" is an interesting addition to our quandary. Thanks for that.
The answer will be in the finding of their marriage.
Will notify you of any discovery.
Kind regards,
Don.

Hi Christine and Don

Tibby looks to be a pet name for Isabella (Isabel/Isobel etc). See www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=tibby

Many thanks to MonicaLfor your info.re Tibby.
Thanks to Fifer too for your input re the Stewarts. The 1851 Census shows "our" lot.James is not a name in our Stewarts but Charles and Margaret sure looks a possibility
Robert, born to Charles and Isabella Fraiter in 1811 married a Janet Dalgleish in Yarrow in 1839 so we've traced one of them.
Kind regards,
Don.

I would check out that Isabella Stewart grandaughter's birth circa 1844.  ;)

Hmm - two possibles for age 7  ???

Charles S/Isabella Currie = Isabella Stewart    Birth:
23 AUG 1844      Melrose, Roxburgh, Scotland

OR

John S/Helen Cockburn = Isabella Stewart    Birth:
02 APR 1845      Yetholm, Roxburgh, Scotland

Scrub that I don't think her name is Stewart check this one out ........

Isabella AIKMAN
21 JUL 1843      Lilliesleaf, Roxburgh, Scotland parents George Aikman/Margaret Stewart

She is the only Isabella listed within 2 years in Lilliesleaf whose mothers name is Stewart.

On SP there is a birth in 1790 for an Isobel Frater (using surname/forename variants) in Stichill, Roxburgh.  That birth would fit well with a marriage in or around 1810.

There is also a birth for a Charles Stewart in 1786 in Yarrow Sekirk.

Thanks fifer for your info which is much appreciated.
Given that Robert Stewart was born in 1811 the isabella Frater  marriage would certainly fit in or around 1810.
Charles Stewart and daughter  in Townhead census are "ours".
It seems most likely that Margaret Stewart married George Aikman and that the isabella staying with her grandfather Charles Stewart and his daughter was Isabella Aikman not Stewart.
Thanks again for your help.
Our Charles Stewart was born in 1788 in Yarrow.
Kind regards,
Don.

Newbie here!
I too am hunting for some Fraters from Selkirkshire, specifically Jane Frater (also recorded as Frazer) supposedly born in Galashiels in 1833. Her father was Robert Frater (or Fraiter) born 1811 in Yarrow, and her mother was Margaret Fletcher. I have been through Scotland's People and I cannot find birth records for her or her siblings seen here https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/tree/11845771/family?fpid=26228465889
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there

Link you posted takes you elsewhere but I can see the main family trees for this line on a/try. I think it is likely that the family trees you are seeing have taken the approx birth years for the children of Robert and Margaret from the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

Only about a third of BMD events are to be found on the Old Parish Regiters. Lots of reasons for this. Many registers have been lost or destroyed over the years and not everyone registered these events for all sorts of reasons, to name but two reasons. It may also be that the family did not belong to the established church of Scotland, ie Presbytian. The OPRs are in the main Presbyterian records. If the family belonged to any other denomination, you may not find records for them pre 1855. Roman Catholic records have recently been added to databases on Scotlands People (the same issues of imcompleteness though).

Thanks Monica, whoops, I had the wrong bit of the tree there, sorry! Thanks for the info, such a pain not being able to find them, have found so many others through Scotland's People, even one ancestor "born in fornication"  :o made it in to the register!
Definitely not RC, so guess they just never got around to it, or, as you say, the records were lost.
I hope to go back to the UK to live at some point, and I'll definitely be going to Selkirkshire.
Already discovered I have lots of ancestors from Dumfries and Galloway, which is one of my favourite corners of the UK, so good excuse to revisit there  :)
