I have my GGG grandparents as James and Grace Holman of Cornwall.
I have this data from the 1841 census:-Enumeration District 13
Civil Parish of Gwennap
Pennance,1,James Holman,60,,Copper Mine Agent,In county,
,,Grace Holman,,55,,In county,
,,William Holman,25,,Working Engineer,Not in county,
,,Josiah Holman,20,,Copper Miner,Not in county,
,,Jerusha Holman,,30,,Not in county,
,,Elizth Holman,,28,Female Servant,Not in county,
I was interested if anyone had any details on James or Grace Holman?

Hi Blacky55 and welcome to Rootschat!
The marriage of James and Grace would appear to be:-
James Holman to Grace Eustice 4th November 1821 Crowan Cornwall
I am certain someone better qualified in Cornish BDM's will confirm or deny!
All the best in your future searches.

Thanks Keyboard86, this marriage date suggests my GG grandfather Josiah and his siblings were born before the marriage? - maybe a 2nd marriage for James? maybe they were bastards?
-
Ha Ha!!
Blacky55, please take into account on the 1841 Census that the ages were adjusted by this formula:-
People aged 15 to 19 rounded down to 15
" " 20 to 24 " " to 20
" " 25 to 29 " " to 25
" " 30 to 34 " " to 30
" " 35 to 39 " " to 35

PS But a 2nd marriage to Grace looks a possibility

Hi
There was a James Holman christianed on 29 August 1780 in Gwennap.
His parents were Alexander and Catherine.
Also, if you're considering Grace as a second marriage a James Holman married Sarah Reed on 21 April 1810 in Gwennap.

Hi Jo
Thanks for that, its seems to have some truth in it, as I have James's second child as Jerusha Reed Holman, so the Reed seems to be a link.
I also had details that he was married to a Grace Trenwith, but it could also be Grace Eustice who seems to have a tree with my GG Grandfather Josiah Holman in it.
Must be a lot of Holmans in Cornwall.
-
Hi Blacky55
I looked to see if I could find out anything more about Alexander and Catherine.
There was an Alexander Holman christened on 8 November 1760 in Gwennap. His parents were Thomas Purtis and Ursula Holman.

think the marriage to Grace Eustice may be another family. Holman isn't uncommon in Cornwall.
From IGI extracted batch C063981 for Brook St Independent, Tavistock
Jerusha Holman born 6/3/1807 bp 8/8/1807 son of James & Grace
From IGI extracted batch M051391 marriages for Mary Tavy, Devon - just a few miles from Tavistock

Trish, those Holman baptisms are in the Wesleyan Church, so looks like the family were non-conformist. IGI has Jecoliah - wonder if it's a mistranscription of Josiah?
:-\
-
Possibly . See below;

Hi Ospry,
Looks like Josiah was a different child;
Looks to me like they moved around a lot ;)
Must admit I am getting confused.
Trying to find all the Children is like a needle in a haystack.
If they married 1804 then there must be other Children.
So far we have;
Jerusha 1807
Lecolish/Jecoliah 1815
William 1817
JOSIAH, Christened 14 Oct 1821, Gwennap to James/Grace (F/S Pilot)
Emily 1825
Elizabeth from 1841 Census may be a Wife or Daug?
Cant find anything for her.
Hi Blacky55,
So I guess you are in Australia if you are descended from Josiah?
Trish :)
-
just looked at the original of the 1841 and there's a line between Jerusha & Elizabeth, so she may not be part of the family.

Hi Toni
I had thought that James may have married Grace Eustice, but I now believe she married a different James Holman, and so I think I am going down the wrong track with the Eustice connection- surprising they both had sons named Josiah ( maybe a popular name of the time?)
-
Hi Blacky55. Been a while, how did you get on with your search?
-
Hi Heritage 101
The Eustice link was wrong, and I found that my James Holman married Grace Trenwith.
I visited Cornwall to look for maybe a headstone, but I think in the mining boom of the time that he and his wife did not end up with a headstone.
I was trying to find out if James's brother started teh mining company Holman and Sons, but I didnt really prove much with that.
I did however find a photo of them both in a magazine about the Cadia Gold mine in Australia wher his son Josiah was the mine captain.
So Ive basically hit a block at James and Grace.
I did find a Trenwith Street in Cornwall, not that it helped.
Regards
Blacky55

You're right of course, James married Grace Trenwith in 1804 at Mary Tavy, Devon.
Grace was born at Redruth in 1787. Her parents were William and Elizabeth Trenwith. She died on 18 November 1867.

Hi Had any luck with your research? Interesting Josiah Jnr was sent to Newington Boarding School, Annie to Petersham, but what of Charles???? Spider
-
Hi
I haven’t really made much headway on my Great Grandfather Charles.
I know he found a large gold nugget near Cadia, he moved to North Sydney, maybe renting a house in Union St.
His wife died unexpectedly and he seemed to fall on hard times.
There was a letter from him to the defence dept to get money from his sons WW1 pay.
I’m hoping to visit his grave in Orange in a few months that may shed a little more info.
My mother said he lost his money on some dodgy investment scheme.
-
Charles funeral was 19 April 1941 in Orange. He died, perhaps a few days/week earlier living in Union Street Manly, but I believe he mover from Cadia, when he sold up the property, to North Sydney. As you probably know, he and Ada had 10 children, Ruby the eldest my Grandmother. I often wondered how he handled the transition moving from Cadia to the "Big Smoke"?
-
My Grandmother was Muriel Ada Holman.
-
I may have met her once or twice. Captain Holman's life is so fascinating that I am writing his life story. Can we correspond outside this?
