Post by: ScottFive on Thursday 18 November 10 04:27 GMT (UK)
I am finding it difficult getting details on  Joseph Samuel ALDEN of Bristol who was born abt.1850 and died abt.1883.  Some cencus information has him listed as Samuel ALDEN living in Bristol; but I think Joseph is his first name. Would be greatful for any help.

Scott.

Hi Sharon - you are a gem!!

I have been trying for ages to get some reliable information. I had an idea that Susanna Alden may be involved (via the cencuses) but you have confirmed it. I have sent away for a birth certificate as well.
Thank you SO much for your speedy reply; it has really helped  :)

Hi Scott,
Greetings from Sydney :)

Lavinia ALDEN, Christened 26 September 1847, Bristol, Gloucester, England
Parents WILLIAM and SUSANNA

This will save you a few Pounds/Dollars;
Marriage F/S Pilot;
William ALDEN, Father WILLIAM Alden
Susanna EDWARDS, Father Edward WHITE
21 July 1846, St Marys Church, Bristol, Gloucester, England

So looks like Susanna at least was a Widow when she Married William.

1861 Census there is a Edward Edwards age 16 who I would think is Susannas Son from her First Marriage. Gosh, Widowed twice in such a few years.

Looks like William was Married before also.
But where are Lavinia and Joseph Samuel in 1851?
Hopefully somewhere else with Grandparents on either Family side.
Everything else seems to match as Edward is with Susanna, Lavinia and Joseph S in 1861.

Hi Trish

WOW!

I don't know where to start.

First of all, I just can't thank you enough!!

I am fairy new to this (its becoming a real hobby with me now) and will have to sit down and figure out all this GREAT information you have supplied. This Joseph Alden chap is a great-great grandfather and no-one in my family has ever know much about him except that he married my g-g grandmother, but died in his early 30's. I can't waite to pass this on to my dad and co.
I will have to find out about this 'piot' family search thing as well...
Talk to you soon,

Scott.

Hi Scott,
You are very welcome and it was a pleasure to help.

Now FreeBMD has the Marriage of Joseph Samuel Alden and Emmeline Pinker, Reg Dec 1871, Bristol, 6a 10
Boy she was young when they married.

Now here is Familysearch Pilot;
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home

I will leave it to you to find the Marriage as it confirms both their Fathers names (Emmelines surname is Pinder on 1871 Census though).
Search for;
Joseph ALDEN, Marriage, 1871, Gloucestershire

Familysearch is great but takes a while to get the best out of it.
Check back at census info and try and match up christenings/sibilngs etc.
Not everything is on there but you have been extremely lucky with this Family!

If you need help just shout ;D

When you get the Cert please let me know.

Hi Trish,

the certificate arrived and it confirms what you were able to find. He was born in Bristol, April 1849; William as father, and Susannah (White) as mother.

Thanks again for your wonderful help!!

I have also been able to glean some more information about him via a 'distant' relative on the 'Genes Reunited' site which I just joined. He was mentioned in his mother's will in 1885 which means he was still alive. We have always thought that he died which prompted his wife to come out to Australia (she arrived in Perth in 1884) but this does not seem to be the case now. She may have left him; and he may have gone to another country; not sure, but it has really widened the mystery as to WHAT happened to him!!

Scott.

Hi, Joseph Samuel Alden born 14th April 1849 and baptised on 6th May 1849 at St Philip and Jacob parish church in Bristol was the brother of my great, great grandfather Thomas York Alden (born 17th September 1850) and their parents were indeed William Alden and Susannah Edwards nee White (my great, great, great grandparents).
William's first wife was Eleanor Stone and they were married in Stapleton, Bristol, on 11th November 1827.
I have lots more information if you are interested.

Welcome to Rootschat Christine.

Scott has not been on Rootschat since May last year.
Hopefully if his email address has not changed he will get a notification of you post on here.
If you post on here 3 times the PM system is activated and you can exchange details to contact one another off this Site.

Trish :)

EDIT;
Its strange that you have Eleanor Stone as Williams 1st Wife and I found a Marriage to a Eleanor Upton.

Hi Trish, thank you  :)

I think I have had contact with Scott a few years ago via Genes Reunited, when we exchanged quite a lot of information.

I too have found the marriage of a William Alden to Eleanor Upton but after extensive research have found that although related, they are not in my direct line.

Best wishes

Chris

Hi Trish and Christine!

Dosn't the time fly! I have been 'inactive' for a little while ... I give the family history a rest, but then take it up again with gusto when I have the time. Its so fascinating.

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier Christine - yes you are right we were in contact through another channel a few years ago. And, yes, you are right regarding William Alden's first wife, it was Eleanor Stone, as I have found. I have been taking a great interest in the Aldens lately, and it can be quite confusing as the different family-lines have the same names, eg. there are several different William Aldens.  I have found it fascinating finding out more information about Susannah Alden - our x3 Great-Grandmother, mostly through newspaper articles (e.g. the court-case where it mentions her dispute with her stepson, William, over the late father/husband's will) and census information. There is much I want to share with you and ask you, so I will 'PM' you, but bare with me; its finding the time!!

I came back onto 'Rootschat' because there is a piece of handwriting that I want to decipher. I have to figure-out first how to attach an image of this (?), but maybe you may know Christine, it is regarding Samuel Alden's occupation as stated on the 1871 census (when he is a lodger - and marries Emmaline later that year) ... it says he is a "Laborer" but, it looks like, is it "Iron Works"??

Hope all is well. And thanks again Trish for your previous help :)

Scott.
