I'm looking for the parents of Jonas CHALONER, likely born about 1566 in county Staffordshire. He was Vicar of Condover from about 1615 - 1639. He died 1 April 1640 at the age of about 74 and was buried at Condover on 4 April 1640. Apparently his son, Thomas CHALONER, was the Headmaster of the Shrewsbury School from 1637- 1645. Jonas may have had a second son, George CHALONER.
Jonas' first wife was Elizabeth (surname unknown) who died about 23 May 1619. He later remarried to Eleanor OTELEY in either 1622 or 1627 (conflicting record reports). Eleanor was the daughter of one Sergeant OTELEY and Isabel MITTON (daughter of Richard MITTON of Salop).
Any light that anyone can shine upon this brickwall genealogical issue would be greatly appreciated :)

Crocus65, welcome to RootsChat. I can't help with the parents, but did have a look on the online Oxford Dictionary of National Biography which has articles on several Chaloners. For Thomas Chaloner it has
"c.1600–1664, headmaster, was born at Llansilin near Oswestry in Denbighshire, the son of Jonas Chaloner, vicar of Much Wenlock, Shropshire, and later rector of Byfield in Northamptonshire." I don't know whether those dates and places tie in with what you know about "your" Jonas' career. A number of the other Chaloners on the ONDB were clergymen - perhaps a family calling?
-
Hi -- thank you so much for checking this out. All leads are very much appreciated, indeed! And just for your information, the present day Challoner that I'm inquiring for is a retired clergy. Amazing!

Jonas CHALONER, Rector, died on 1 April 1640 and was buried 4 April 1640 at Condover, Shropshire, which is in the Diocese of Lichfield, so think from information sent me that his will, if there is one, likely resides in the Lichfield Record Office.
His first wife, Elizabeth, died about 23 May 1619. He later remarried to Eleanor OTELEY, in either 1622 or 1627 (conflicting record reports on Ancestry.ca). Eleanor was the daughter of Sgt. OTELEY and Isabel MITTON (who was the daughter of Richard MITTON of Salop). A son, Thomas CHALINOR, (about 1600 - 1664), was Headmaster of Shrewsbury School from 1637 - 45. Another son, may be George CHALINOR.
I live in Canada, so I can't just pop in to the Lichfield RO to inquire :-)
Is there anyone who lives nearby or who is going to the Lichfield RO that might be willing to do a look-up for me?
-
Crocus65 - I've never been to LichfieldRO, but I have ordered wills from there, but not for a couple of years. There are contact details on this link, so you could call or e-mail them direct. Sadly the wills still don't seem to have been added to the online Staffs catalogue which would make our life a bit easier!

(Incidentally if anyone is visiting Stafford they used to have the Lichfield will list on film).
-
Thank you for this information and especially for the tip about the Lichfield info on film.

N.B. also this parallel thread (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,499023.new.html#new) on the Denbighshire board.

Hello shenor, after many tries I think I have actually found a way to reply to you!! Thank you for your Post. I had , from another source, had the suggestion that the parents of Jonas Chaloner were Robert Dudleigh and Queen Elizabeth. I would like to contact Joan Chaloner, to check her source of this information. Would you, please, help me to do so. Thank you. From yllahc.
-
Hello shenor. I haven't had a reply to my previous message. I hope you received it. I am wondering what your interest is in Jonas Chaloner. I would like to get confirmation of the message that his father was Robert Dudleigh and mother was Queen Elizabeth1.i

Hello Crocus65, Are you still with us?! I was just looking at your request from 2010 re parents of Jonas Chaloner, vicar of Much Wenlock, born 1566. I have been on the same search for many years. The latest possibilities I've come up with are: 1) from Ancestry.com., 9/5/2018: "Jonas was born in 1566, the son of John Chaloner and Alice Spenn. (John died in 1599). Same info from jeffjerwin2 on Aug.21,2017.
2) from shenor, in 2010. she said that a Joan Chaloner had info that Jonas' parents were Lord Robert Dudleigh and Queen Elizabeth 1, in other words he was an illegitimate son of royalty.
Take your pick! - and let me know what you think.

Hello Rosie99. Thank you for your message. I'm enjoying being "back in the loop", and continuing my research into the Chaloner/Challoner family tree. I realize that members such as shenor, and crocus65 last posted in 2010, but I've sent them Posts anyway. I hope they get them!

Hello Crocus 65, I'm "longing" to hear from you! I'm wondering if you trace your family tree from one of the children of Jonas Chaloner. I'm descended from Thomas, who became Headmaster of Shrewsbury School. Are you descended from Thomas, or perhaps Mercia, or George, or Seth?

Hi, CROCUS65! I hope you see this! I'm trying again to communicate by these posts. I am wondering if you have a special interest in Thomas Chaloner, Headmaster of Shrewsbury and Ruthin Schools. If so, I have a photo of him, and several articles which may interest you, one of which is called "Thomas Chaloner,,, "A Rolling Stone", by Keith Kenyon Thompson.(Hope you're keeping safe from the virus).

Hello, ROL,
Are you still around. I'd like to chat with you. I have info on Thomas Chaloner, schoolmaster at Shrewsbury School - including a photo. Please reply.

Apologies to all who have replied to this request. The gentleman I was researching for has ceased his inquiry, so there is no longer any need to continue researching this topic. Thank you for all your interest.

Hi Crocus 65,
Thanks for your reply. At least I can stop "bothering you", since I know your quest is completed! I will now concentrate on hearing from Rol Cheers. Stay well.

Hello. I am new to this site. My mum Sheila Beaumont ne Challoner has been doing family history for about 35 years. We know the family secret regarding jonas' parents, when we worked it out so many people thought the same thing. We are direct decendants from Roger the last born of Thomas headmaster.Your expression 'over the pond' triggered you might be someone called Jeoff in Alberta Canada. Also Joan Challoner was a descendant of Thomas, who sadly passed away 2 years ago aged approximately 80. Her son is called John.
We live in North Wales. My name is Victoria.
