Title: CURGENVEN - anyone heard of this name ?
Post by: Kennington on Wednesday 13 April 05 09:25 BST (UK)
Hi
Has anyone heard of this surname?
I have just uncovered a gggg grandmother with the name of Elizabeth Curgenven, born 1756, Veryan Cornwall.

I can't find any information about this name so far and wondered if anyone else has seen it.

Does it have a more modern look to it now I wonder?
Mary :-\

Hi Mary,

Not sure about more modern sounding variations, but on www.192.com there are surprisingly a fair few of them around now.

On the 1871 census for instance there are about 40 of them mostly in Cornwall.

Jonathan

Hi Mary,

have you seen this site ??: http://www.ellis.genproxy.co.uk/curgenven.htm

CURGENVEN
The Premise: all Curgenvens and their descendants are related.

The very Cornish sounding name CURGENVEN appears to have been an invention by the Reverend Thomas LEAN (born 1644 in Lelant, Cornwall - died 1712 at Folke, Dorset), Educated at Exeter College, Oxford, in 1680 Married Dorothy PITT (of the family that produced the two William PITTS ). Headmaster of Sherborne school Dorset (1683 - 1695) and then Rector of the nearby Parish of Folke.
......
Alan Kent, Cornwall Family History Society, member no. 00026 is the acknowledged expert on the Curgenven name.

It was the first entry on a Google-search for curgenven

Clearly Quite a Common Cornish name So many on the IGI for Cornwall

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

Plenty of mention of the name on Sharon Symons Cornish Ancestors site for Veryan also

http://www.cornish-ancestors.co.uk/Veryan/index.htm

Your Elizabeth is listed onsite ;)

quite a few mentioned in the 1821 census for Veryan so there is a history in the area

I've traced my family tree back to Catherine Judith Curgenven who was baptised on 02/08/1818 at the Parish Church of St. Andrews in Plymouth . Her parents are stated as John (a patten maker) and Mary. I’ve also traced 4 others Curgenven’s baptised in Plymouth with the same parents:-

Elizabeth – 25/03/1799
Thomas – 02/09/1804
Benjamin – 10/01/1808
Nicholas – 30/05/1814

I would now like to find out more about John Curgenven's origin. Is he related to the Cornish Curgenvens? Anyone able to help?

Many thanks.

...and Henry, baptised on 11/06/1810.

Further Curgenven info - John Curgenven and Elizabeth Metchlor married in East Stonehouse (Plymouth) on 20/01/1820. They had a son, Francis Metchlor Curgenven baptisted on 02/02/1823. Father John is a patten maker (is this the same guy?)

Hi Megs, it's never too late. I've hit a brick wall on this one. John Curgenven, living in Plymouth in 1799, probably earlier, is the person I'm really interested in. Do you have a record of a John Curgenven marrying a Mary late 1700s?

Does anyone know of any image of John Brendon Curgenven (1831 - 1903) who founded the Infant Life Protection Society, please? The BBC is making a programme that would belatedly give him credit for his achievements as a social reformer who pioneered today's child protection laws. It seems astonishing that he would never have been painted or photographed, considering the eminent circles in which he lived and worked.

Thank you.

While searching the Philp family tree in Cornwall, there is an event where Edward Philp married Frances Curgenven in 1766 in Cornwall, UK, Francis was one of eight children of Peter Curgenven

However I note some details to be incorrect on the Shaw family tree.

If this e-mail reaches you (SHAW), please respond and I will provide details and advise you of a Recent FREE local County website that has a great database for searches back to 1500

Okay I have just read the posts, and I have been intrigued by the note that this name was made up by the Bishop of Exeter (?) but also I had seen that the name was connected with the ship the "Bounty".

My interest came from researching the Philp/ Philpe Family of my wife`s Mother and as someone has already advised, Peter Curgenven bpt 1712 married Jane Langdon bpt 1714 on May 1st 1766 in Veryan & had 8 children including Frances bpt 1739 who married Edward Philp.
I note the web site: cornwall-opc has 18 Curgenven`s in the churchyard but there does not seem to be any record in the 1500`s, this web site is Fantastic & is leading the way in the Uk (from my experience) opc stands for online parish clerks.
If anyone is interested last year I had a Philp headstone relocated back to the Veryan cemetery and refitted it to its original location.

Edward,
My wife`s FT starts with Walteri Philpe (no bpt) but marriage 20th Oct 1566 this goes down to Edward Philp bpt about 1736 but to to his 5th child John Philp bpt 15th Aug 1775, then to Peter Blamey Philp bpt 1st April 1804.
At present I am updating my wifes other FT the Lean/ Leane and so I can not recall the line down off the top of my head as the Philp FT has been widened to include as many branches as possible. This has at present 364 persons on the FT.
If this is of interest to you we will need to comunicate somehow ?

Regarding the marriage of Peter Curgenven and Jane Langdon in Veryan in 1738. I believe they were my G5 Grandparents and had a daughter Frances who married my G4 Grandfather George Gay in 1751. This does not make sense. She is too young!

The Marriage of George Gay & Frances Curgenven:
Although Francis (dau of Peter & Jane) was bpt in 1739 that does not mean her date of birth, many people have been baptised just before marriage to enable a church wedding. I have seen in my wife's family trees persons who were baptised at 12 & 14 years old and mostly at the same time as younger brothers or sisters (a job lot) but normally the vicar has identified on the edge of the page a note to confirm the age at baptism.
I suggest you check the burial of Frances to see if an age is recorded.

Hello Brian
Thanks very much for for your help. It did cross my mind about being baptised later in life. My Frances Curgenven married George Gay in 1751, and was baptised in 1739. Her burial was in 1788, aged 68, making her birth about 1720 baptised at 19 and married at 31. This makes better sense. I take it there is no registry of births.  Regards. Paul.

Paul, not cetain exactly when the registration of Births, marriage and Death started but think it was around 1840, although about 15 years ago at the Family Records Centre I checked for the oldest  Certificate which was an 1832. I believe there was a period before it became law to Register.

Thanks again.
I think I have the wrong Frances Curvengen. According to the the burial record, she was born about 1920 but I cannot find the right parents. I dont think it can be Peter and Jane. I am relying alot on Cornwall OPC. Paul.

Paul,  I am unsure with your problem, but the census records are great for locaing families from 1841 up to 1911.  Free BMD is good for 1841 to 1891 but you need to go you liberary to see 1901 & 1911 free via find my Past

Paul said

"That marriage is listed on the Cornwall OPC ."

Thank you Paul. The record is also on Family Search.
I tend to use the OPC Index and then try and find the record on Family Search.
However there are still records that appear in one place but not the other and vice versa.

Someone kindly PM'd me Blanche's baptism and I was able to view the record on Family Search.
Some additional information from an abstract of a lease in the CRO catalog provided further evidence that I now have the correct parents for Blanche. Their marriage is indexed on the OPC and again I was able to view the record (such as it is - two names and a date) on Family Search.

Thanks to those who responded.

I have Edward Philp as being baptised at Gerrans 8th April 1740 to Daniel Philp & Elizabeth James. Does this match your EP?

I am now wondering if I have made an error :-\
