Title: Yet another old pub
Post by: Trees on Wednesday 15 December 10 08:11 GMT (UK)
Does any one know anything about The Hawford Inn please
All I know is that in 1881 it was kept by Henry Poynter WOODWARD he couldn't have been there long as a directory for 1979 lists a Wm Lloyd there and by 1891 Henry?Harry WOODWARD has moved to Warwickshire
However I am interested in the history of the Inn
Cheers

Hi Trees

I was talking to my cousin this morn (he is a fountain of knowledge about some of Worcestershire) & happened to mention the Hawford Inn - his response was this - going from Ombersley towards Worcester there is a sign for Chatley on the left hand side of the road, the hawford Inn used to stand about here & was knocked down about 40 yeas ago when they widened the duel caridgeway so the pub is more than likely under the A449 now - it stood near a place called the Dovecote (you can view this place on Wicipedia as its still standing) - the last my cousin Mick knew about the hawford Inn a mother & son were running it.

I hope that this is a litle bit of help to you even though it does sound rather disjointed.

All the very best

Phil
on my Christmas/New Year holiday at Crossway Green - Look on the map lol  :)

Hello Hazel
I guess you would like a photograph of the Inn. The County Record Office (CRO) has large photographic collection. The Hawford Inn photos  listed below are held on microfiche at both the History Centre and the County Hall branch:-
http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/cms/community-and-living/records/search-our-records.aspx
You would need to check with the CRO if/how you can obtain permission from the current copyright holder to get a copy of the original photo:-
http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/cms/community-and-living/records/record-office-shop/digital-image-ordering.aspx
1) Register Number 2299 - Date 1941. Copyright Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries
2) Register Number 31770 - Date 1962. Copyright W.F. Meadows
3) Register Number 24714 - Date 1962. Copyright Berrows
4) Register Number 1637 - Date 1951. Copyright J.R. Reid
5) Register Number 1767 - Date 1951. Copyright Miss E. Warmington

There are others photos but I believe the current copyright holder charges a hefty sum for permission and hopefully one of the above photos would do instead. As I shall not be going to the History Centre for a while, perhaps SKS -  aka Philheeks -  could have a look at them for you when he’s next in Worcester and suggest which is “the best”?

that is great many thanks you wouldn't know if there is a history of the pub at the RO it is most strange not to find any record of it anywhere. Was it a Wolverhampyon & Dudley Breweries house? That may be a starting place to finding anything of it's history.

Hello Hazel
Only part of the Worcestershire Record Office catalogue is currently on-line, but as one of the photos mentioned is the copyright of Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries, I guess it was their pub. (They are now known as Marstons PLC). It maybe that there is information on the pub in the paper index at Worcester.
Perhaps you will find something relevant on this website. http://blackcountryhistory.org/collections/search/advanced/
In the “advanced search” option key in “all partners” then “Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries”,  or Marstons

Hi
Don't forget that the County Hall branch (where any original documents for the pub would be held) is closed the first complete week (Monday to Friday inclusive) of each calendar month.

I'll pop that in my diary as soon as I start the new one thanks How is the new building progressing when is i due to open do you know?
Title: Re: Yet another old pub
Post by: Nemo on Thursday 23 December 10 10:45 GMT (UK)
Hi
The completion date is 2012. It’s progressing well by the look of it. It’s irregular shape  can be seen,  but the “waffles” area is covered  by wood – unless that’s what the innovative tiles are going to be attached to!
You can follow the Centre’s progress on:-
http://www.wlhc.org.uk/

If you hope to take photos of original documents at the CRO in the New Year, you will need to buy a photographic permit. See:-
http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/cms/community-and-living/records/policies/charges.aspx
Check with the CRO if  need to take any ID for the permit, other than your CARN card.

Hi Trees

The new History Centre,Record Office etc looks a very big building & I cant wait to get into it & get my hands on some older documents that I cant access at the History Centre

You can have a look at it on the net, I saw web cameras were in use there when I was at Weston but was unable to access them the next time I went to my local library at home & havent tried since being on holiday in the county of my birth but had a look at the building each time I pass it on the bus returning from my visits to the History Centre

All the very best

Phil

ps I hope that they keep the current History Centre Staff as they are very friendly & exceedingly helpful

Have only just come across this thread, and wonder if Marston's took over from Banks's Brewery? Don't know if this helps.

Not sure if the person looking for the information on the Hawford Inn is still looking but I live in Chatley and my father in law and mother in law used to meet in the Inn when courting. We actally own the field where the garden of the inn would of been as the main dual carriage way to worcester is right on top of where the Inn was. We also have the 1911 census for the Inn but due to ancestry having the incorrect spelling it is listed as Hanford Inn instead of Hawford Inn.

I have tried to attached the census bt it says the file is too big.

If the person whom is looking for a photograph and the Census I also have this - Please email me direct it is my main email and only myself reads it.

Many Thanks

Liam

I would love a photo of the Inn/ May pubs had a field attached to graze their clients horses and/or to grow food for the Inn I wonder if the Hawford was used in that way. I have now been to the Worcester Hive several times, but have never got round to finding more about the Inn will put it back on the to do list for our next visit. Thank you for reminding me.

To Trees

Okay have modified my memo. Not sure how this works just saw someone was looking for information. The photograph I have shows the Inn and the outer buildings attached to it there was also a small blacksmiths at the back side of the Inn. The Garden area is very rich in the soil in our field. But there is nothing to state it was there at all just local knowledge from us.

Hi Trees

Im sure I sent you a message some time ago about the Hawford Inn & I think it said a cousin of mine could remember it being kept by a mother & son - the pub has been gone for a long time & I never remember it but would have had no cause to when going from Kidderminster to Worcester to watch the cricket at New Road Ground.

I am going to the county for Christmas so will try top pump my cousin for information again as he likes talking the old buildings & was born & has lived at Hartlebury & is 85 years old so has a lot of knowledge of the county

All the very best

Hi Trees

I just looked through the replies to this posting & if you look at page 2 you will see mine at the top of the page - which comes from the cousin I said I would ask about it.  I know that he has a book titled Worcestershire historic pubs (as I bought it him) so will have a look at that as well

Thanks Phil its been an age since we were active on this one. I am well behind with my updating. My sight has been steadily deteriorating, they thought I needed two cataracts removed but after doing the first they have discovered my problem was behind the retina and I have to have a bit more complicated surgery hopefully once that is done in the new year I'll be able to get back to some good Family History work.

Hi Trees

Ive asked my cousin again to see if he can elaborate on what he told me about the old Hawford Inn before but he cant add anything more & I looked at the book of Worcestershire Historic Pubs I bought him & the Hawford Inn isn't in the book - it looks as though the only pubs in it are the ones still standing.  Mind you Im in the right place to try & find something out about the pub as Im on holiday in the county of my birth till New Year, please don't rely on me but I'll try to find something else out for you

All the very best

Phil
