Title: Grindall/Grundill Cumberland names
Post by: karina on Wednesday 13 April 05 18:08 BST (UK)
Hi. I am looking for information on the Grindall families who lived in various place in Cumberland. I have alot of info but also have lots of gaps. Any and all info would be welcomed.
I am also looking at the Grundill name that appears in Cumberland after 1860.
Thanks
Karina   :)

Thank you for the pic. Any chance of any more info on these two as they do not appear in my tree at the moment, but must be related. I have more trouble with the recent family than I do with the ancient ones

I don't have any information other than the picture, I just saw the grave & remembered the name. I will look out for the name when I am in the record office, because of my new job I don't get as much time as I did there, I'll tell you what I'll do as a favour I am at home a day off work, hospital appoint, its 15:30 and I'll go have a quick look, but don't expect a answer right away none of this area has any indexes, so its trawling through microfilms

The photo: It was taken at a place called Camerton, which is near  the villages of Flimby and  Seaton.  Workington is the closest town, Maryport is close as well, It comes under the Cockermouth Registration District, and it is/was a farming/ mining area

I think I may have seen the name at Flimby cemetary.

William and Dorothy Grundill

JAC1225,

William he died in Lourdes Hospital, Liverpool on May 19th 1979 aged 82, so that gives you a birth date
Dorothy she died in Childwall Rd, Liverpool, on Nov 5th 1968, aged 69, I would have thought that for them to be brought all the way back to Cumbria, to be buried I think would mean that they were from Camerton or the family was

Andrew, Thank you so much for the info. My branch of the Grundill family did not move to the Whitehaven area untill 1860. I have as yet, not been able to connect the Grindell/grundell that were in the Cumbria area earlier to my family tree though I am sure there must be a connection somewhere. My earliest family members were in Yorkshire then Durham before coming west to Cumbria, but I do welcome any info on any variation of the name as some day maybe the link will become obvious.
Thanks again Karina

Hi - I'm sure you know this already, but just in case you don't, I thought I'd add ...

I live in St. Bees. We've got several Grindall references round here. There's a house where the Grindall was born who went on to become Archbishop of Canterbury centuries ago. Plus what was the Station / Royal Hotel is now called Grindall House in his honour.

Sorry if I'm going over old ground!

Not going over old ground I am sure that Karina will find it of use. If it is old ground then duplication is better than none at all (belt and braces)

Thank you both for your help and interest. I was aware of the St Bees connection as I used to live in Whitehaven, but am always pleased to hear of any info as it is suprising what you miss when researching, sometimes other people spot connections you don't.
Thanks again Karina
