Post by: Flora1966 on Wednesday 29 December 10 17:57 GMT (UK)
My Ramus ancestors were born, married and died in Bungay...I am trying to find out where they are buried as most of them were buried at The Independent Congregational Church..

I went to Bungay in search of this church and nobody living there had heard of it!! Is anybody able to shed some light on this Church.....

Thank you

There was a Congregational church in Upper Olland Street, Bungay. My grandfather's funeral was held there. According to the Bungay website, It's now called the Emmanuel Church. This is the link:-

Hello,

Today I looked round the burial site of Immanuel Church, which used to be the Congregational Church. (And is now Emmanuel Church, with the United Reformed and Methodist Churches). If you Street Google, Upper Olland Street, Bungay, Suffolk, you will find it. With the little yellow man, come from St Mary’s Street, and it is on the right, you’ll see the yellow cones in the road stopping people from parking. The burial area is in front of the church, and when the camera for Google arrived a wedding had just taken place. Behind, the bride standing on the grass, the grave stones have been placed, both on the right and left of the boundary walls all the way along. The grave stones were moved during the last 70 years, possibly before the Second World War, my informant can’t quite remember! Burials have not taken place in Upper Olland Street for many years. The area was then landscaped into the garden. Today there were no leaves or green vegetation so it was quite easy to see the stones, but sadly not easy to read the inscriptions, but they were all very old stones, and I could find no Ramus.

Sorry.

But I did find the following on the NBI =

14 Jan   1839   Elizabeth RAMUS  69  Suffolk Bungay, Independent Congregational

24 Jun   1837   James   RAMUS 66   Suffolk Bungay, Independent Congregational

5 Sep   1809   Walter   RAMUS? 1+   Suffolk Bungay, Independent Congregational

The NBI does have other Ramus in other sites in Bungay, if you PM me I’ll send them to you, none recent. My informant did not recognize that name and he is now 87 and knows Bungay very well!

Mary.

Thank you so much Mary for taking the time to look for me....I have been to Bungay once before but wasn't very successful....

I do already have the burials that you found on NBI.....It's just a shame that the gravestones are not very clear....I know that some of my Ramus family had a bit of money so I'm just guessing that they would have had headstones....

Maybe one day I will get to visit again...

Thank you once again

No doubt you have checked the Waveney web site, but I wondered if you wrote to them whether they could tell you more about what happened at the Congregational Church grounds.

In September 2009, I produced a table of baptisms, marriages and burials for the surname Ramus, from both the Bungay Parish Records, and my research of the gravestones in St Mary's churchyard. It highlights three burials at the Independent/Congregational church, plus several more at St Mary's and Holy Trinity churches, along with many baptism and marriage details. If you would like me to forward a copy of the table, going back to 1705, please let me know.

Hi

My 3rd great-grandfather was Charles Henry Ramus born in Bungay on the 28 July 1823 to Charles Ramus and Sarah Rebecca Rudland. Charles H. Ramus later married Maria Hall in June/July 1846.

I am trying to find out more information regarding Charles H's father who was also called Charles (born in Bungay around 1800) and his parents/family who I believe to be James Ramus and Elizabeth (surname unknown).

If anyone reading this thread has any information regarding the above I would be very pleased to hear from you via PM (to exchange email address/info etc)

Many thanks

Robert Frost

hi there , I have just begun this research but see Louis Ramus from a Swiss villiage , brother Nicholas ( a little famous with nice portraits of his daughters on web). Both Nick & Louis were pages. Nick for George 3rd.
Louis came to Bungay I think and had son Charles, then James thomas,  who is my ancester. James came to Aus to Ballarat. My Grandfather was his grandson.

Hope this helps.

Cheers June
