Hi NorrieG
I'd like any detail you have for Jessie Irene Pearson b. 12 Feb 1895 and d. 12 Aug 1991 who I believe is interred at Kilconquhar. She lived in the USA for many years but died in Craigtoun Hospital, St Andrews. She never married.
Jessie's parents were George Pearson and Emily Smith. George was a professional golfer and played in the U.S. Open on four occasions - 1897 (tied in 48th place), 1898 (withdrew), 1905 (tied in 50th place) and finally 1907.
George and Emily both died in Earlsferry - 1955 and 1942 respectively - so may also lie in Kilconquhar Churchyard.

NorrieG, that's a very kind offer.
I have a Ann Campbell nee Grubb, married to Murdoch Campbell. I know she was buried in the burial ground of Largo in 1856 (but she was listed as a pauper in 1851 so may not have got a headstone).

In Largo Bonnyton date of burial 2.4.1804
Still born child of Murdoch Campbell ( servant )
Murdoch Campbell Largo Pilmuir

there is an Ann Grubb Who died in Largo,Little Pilmuir

I've got her death certificate (post 1855) which does list her as a Campbell at death, and I do have a marriage record for her and Murdoch in 1799. The parents match the Ann Grubb you list.
Thanks for taking the time to look it up for me though - another little bit of information added in, and a bit of a mystery too!
I have Ann Grubb,s sister Alison b 1786 in my line she married George Kidd in 1825.
Well we're distantly related then - Ann was my 5g grandmother! One of Ann's children was named Alison - presumably after her sister!

By chance do you have anything on this woman?
Isabella Pryde (never married)
b. 1857/8 in Ceres
d. 3/3/1953 in Buckhaven
I ask in this forum because she spent most of her life in Woodside, Largo. I have been unable to determine where she was buried.

Hi Mary sorry can't find anything on Isabella
who were her parents ? my index is based
on their names.
The next time Iam at the library will check local
paper for her Death as being 96 there could be something
I live in Glenrothes and stayed in Methil in the 50s

I really appreciate the offer, Norrie. Being in the USA, I can't just run down to the library.
Isabella's parents were Robert Pride/Pryde and Mary Doig. I am aware that Robert and Mary were recently mentioned here and I am in touch with that poster (we share Robert & Mary). However, I don't believe he has anything on Isabella's burial as he went down a different line from there.
Long story short, she gave birth to three illegitimate sons between 1877 and 1886 (one of whom was my grandfather) and then remained in Woodside as housekeeper to her father at least through the 1901 census. She died at Methilhaven on 3/3/1953 but Fife Council personnel have not been able to help with her burial.

Hi Mary yes I have there stone in Largo Cemetery

above John PRYDE died 6.7.1944 age 69

where in Methilhaven did she live ? I lived in the 50s only half a mile away.
Will look into some other things which may be of help to you.

Lovely! And thank you for those pieces of the puzzle, Robert & Mary are my g-g-grandparents so John would be my g-grandmother Isabella's brother and Jane her sister. I wonder what happened to poor Isabella's remains. I have her statutory death registration:
District of Buckhaven in the County of Fife, 1953, page 18:
Isabella Pryde (single) died March 3rd 1953 (4 hr AM?) Methilhaven, Methil., Female, 95 Years,
(Parents as we know), Cause: Senility, Cardio-Vascular degeneration as Cert by C.G. Skinner (some initials?). Informant was her son, William Pryde of Woodside, New Gilston by Largo.
As to "Where in Methilhaven did she live?" I can only assume that she lived in some sort of nursing home, due to her age, her senility, and the fact that her son lived elsewhere. I don't know if that would have been for a year or so - or for many years. She probably remained in Woodside up until became necessary for her to go to a nursing home. I wish I could see the censuses for the 1920's, 1930's and 1940's. Perhaps John/Jane or some other relative took care of her? John and Jane were Isabella's much younger siblings so she may have run out of siblings to care for her when they died. Of her 3 sons, one was in the USA, one had died, and William was the only one in Scotland. Anything you can find out would be most welcome.
-
Norrie - One more idea:
Perhaps Isabella is buried with the others there but arrangements were not made to have her name put on the headstone?
I suppose I'm really reaching now, but is there a cemetery office to ask? Fife Council didn't have anything.
-
Hi Mary
that could well be, in a double lair which that appears to be
there were only 5 names listed on the stone, so there was room
for one more. as the last one died in 1951 she must have known there was still room at the inn.
there was a Methilhaven Nurseing home, in fact my wives Grandparents
both passed away from there.
will let you know if I find anything else out.

Norrie, I'm getting ahead of myself here (and taking unfair advantage of your original kind offer). But, thinking ahead, if it should turn out that Isabella is buried in that lair, then I would be interested in arranging to have her name added to the marker. I don't know how it works in Scotland, but I'm sure I couldn't just do it without the permission of the current owner of the lair. So I would be interested in contact information for whoever that is. I have not located descendants of her son William, so would have no idea where to begin to find any local family. Obviously, since she died in 1953, no one else plans to take care of it. All this is irrelevant, of course, unless we establish that she is, indeed, interred there. Mary

My William (Isabella's son) was born in 1886 and was alive in 1953 to inform the registrar of his mother's death. Robert Pryde and Mary Doig did have a son William born 1859 (Isabella's brother). I can't find him after the 1881 census. If we allow for a birth 7 years off, it might be him. I've never heard of Layhallan Mill - do you know where it is? I'll try to check on Scotland's People to see if the marriage record for William and Kate gives his parents' names.
You must be a night-owl, Norrie, to focus on all this so late. My brain is turning to mush and it's only 7pm here!
Regards, Mary
-
Hi there Mary and NorrieG,
I think you'll find that 'Layhallan' COULD be Lathallan ... there's a Wester Lathallan, Lathallan Home Farm and Lathallan Mill around Gilston House in Fife http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=345500&y=706500&z=120&sv=lathallan&st=3&tl=Map+of+Lathallan+Home+Fm,+Fife+[Farm]&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=map.srf

Norrie I was wondering if I could impose on you to look for my 3rd great grandparents - Robert Black and Margaret Brown. He was born in Ceres abt 1784 and she was born in Largo in 1790. They were married in Ceres in 1809. I can find no record of their deaths as their names are very common. It is hard to pin down.
Any help would be appreciated.

The family seem to have moved elsewhere in Fife!, the only marriages I have for their children is their son William who married Agnes Kinnear in Dairsie 1826 and my ancestors their son Peter Brown who married Barbara Gourlay also in 1826 but in Monimail....looks like a 'dead end ' sorry for the pun. Many thanks though for your really quick reply. You're doing a great job.
Warm Regards from Jenc

Hi Norrie
A friend has just mentioned that there's a rather grand TULLOCH headstone in Kilconquhar erected by Isabella Durkie Currie in Memory of her Mother - Isabella Durkie Tulloch 1839-1910, Father - John Currie 1842-1888 and Brother - Robert Tulloch Currie 1874-1888. Robert died 9 days after his father - both from Diphtheria!
If you have an image could you post it here please?

I'm on a roll at the moment Norrie!
Could you check your index for two possible Kilconquhar burials, please?
John Gatherum 13 Sep 1791 (New Gilston) - 21 Jun 1871 and his wife
Elizabeth Wales or Wyles 6 Apr 1788 (E. Wemyss) - 15 Dec 1871
Their deaths are recorded as Kilconquhar so there's a strong possibility they were interred there. Posting a headstone image and/or inscription here may help others too!

Hi Norrie,
I’m looking for any headstone of the Lawrie family in Largo & Newburn Cemetery.
Many years ago I looked over the graveyard and only found a couple of stones.
My Lawrie family appears to be the only family of that name in Largo from circa 1840’s onwards.
The family came from Wemyss and moved to Largo after William Lawrie’s first wife Sophia Neish died.
He married Ann Balfour in 1848, Largo.
The lineage is William Lawrie (my direct ancestor)
b.1796, Wemyss
d.1886, Largo
m. Sophia Neish 1818, Wemyss.
I can’t find a death for Sophia but Willie married Ann Balfour 1848, Largo.
Ann Balfour
b.1806, Largo
d.1893, Largo.
The bairns of Willie & Sophia are:
(1) William Lawrie
b.1820 Wemyss.
According to the OPR he married Catherine Lamb 1850, Largo but this has been proved to be incorrect. I cannot find him anywhere.
(2) Margaret Lawrie
b.1825, Wemyss
d.1897, Largo
m. 1843, Largo to Robert Guthrie.
(3) James Lawrie (my direct ancestor)
b.1826, Wemyss.
Died sometime between 1863-67.
James was a merchant seaman and was believed to be drowned at sea.
He married Isabella Sime 1850, Largo.
Isabella died 1912, Largo.
(4) Johan (Hannah) Lawrie
b.1828, Wemyss
d.1910, Largo
m.1849, Largo to James Simpson
(5) Andrew Lawrie
b.1831, Wemyss
d.1881, Largo
unmarried
(6) Agnes Lawrie
b.1834, Wemyss
d.1907, Largo
m.1858, Largo to Alexander Anderson
(7) Catherine Lawrie
b.1837, Wemyss
d.1881, Largo
m.1870, Largo to James Studd
At least seven of the above died in Largo but I have never found a stone.
The only stone I found was to Thomas Lawrie & Isabella Clunie who is a son of the above (3) James Lawrie.
Do you have anything in your files?
Buckhind
ps I forgot to add that a sister of Willie Lawrie was
Catherine Lawrie
b.1791, Wemyss
d.1855, Temple, Largo
m.1812, Wemyss to George Henderson

Hi Buckhind sorry my problem the inscription should have been

who died 17.3.1952
not a very clear photo, or maybe it was the wine that caused my fingers
to type the wrong words and date.

Norrie - One more idea:
Perhaps Isabella is buried with the others there but arrangements were not made to have her name put on the headstone?
I suppose I'm really reaching now, but is there a cemetery office to ask? Fife Council didn't have anything.
Hi, Norrie -
I thought you would be interested to know that I asked Fife Council to please look one more time in their records and today the Cupar office has confirmed that Isabella Pryde is buried in the lair you located for me.
I have asked if they have any contact information for the current owner of lair 1196 at Largo Cemetery so that I can attempt to have Isabella's name added to the stone. The brick wall is beginning to crumble.
Did you have a chance to see if there are any records on her at the Methilhaven home?
Best regards, Mary
-

Hi Christina my index is set up based on Parents names.
Who were their parents so I can check
Norrie

Hi - Parents were Mary Budd and James Bissett. I am not very hopeful to be honest as I doubt the family could afford a marker. The parents aren't buried there as the family moved to England shortly after the girls died

Fifefhs also show PRAT, JAMES: Barnyards; 20 June 1847 at Kilconqhuar who would be husband.
Why do you ask about their 3 sons...????
I have tracked down 4:
William PRATT, 1800-1885 (Gt x 3 Grandfather)
Alexander PRATT, 1805-1883
John PRATT, 1807-?
Philip PRATT, 1815-1885.
All parentage verified by Stat. Death Extracts apart from John. All I have for him is OPR birth.
Have you further info on them or more sons...???
Douglas.
-
Norrie,
I've looked this over again, and think I may have gone off on the wrong track...
My James PRATT was born in Kettle...his children were born in Cupar, Markinch and Kennoway, so it is more likely he ended up in that area, rather than Kilconquhar.
I've looked at census records for 1841 which show a James Pratt and Kath WHYTE at Barnyards with 3 sons, but ages and the names of the latter do not tie up.
So....now looking for the death of MY James PRATT elsewhere....
Just coincidence that he married a Catherine White.
Thanks for the assistance.
Dougie.

Hi Douglas so you think that James born 1867 Kettle to James Prett & Katherine Dall
but you have no paperwork to back it up.
remember their 1st son was called William its usual to call
the first son after their father so it should be James
I think you were on the right lines
Norrie
-
Norrie,
Tried replying there but something happened to my post and it vanished.....:-(
The last entry on your previous post are my Gt x 3 Grandparents, William Pratt & Agnes Pearson.
My line comes from their daughter, Catherine, who as you state correctly, marries John Annan.
From there, Annan mingles with Forgan and I eventually appear...
My quandry is regarding what happens with William parents, James Pratt & Catherine White.
I know they marry on 12 Nov 1794 @ St Monance - GROS 454/00 0020 0279 (St Monance), with Catherine being of that parish, while James (b.25/05/1767 @ Kettle) was of the parish of Cupar.
That's all I have, save for the births of their children in Cupar, Markinch and latterly Kennoway (1815).
Regards,
Douglas.

Hi Ruth sorry nothing else on index I did see Anges marriage to
James Kinghorn in 19.6.1830 Kilconquhar but I though that at 29
it would not be her.
I'm lucky to have my own IGI fieshs for Scotland so it makes easier
to check for marriages.

Hi Norrie
I have the following transcription in Newburn Churchyard of:
Wm(anderson), w Isobel (Syme) 7.3.17(29) 59;A A A C: And Anderson tennent (Rires), w Ann (Christie) 7.2.1757 57; And Anderson late tennant (Rires) 31.10.1758 57
Could you see if you have the stone.
Also wondering if you can tell me the meaning of the numbers. Am I correct in
William Anderson died at 59 years old, and Isobel Syme died 7 Mar 1717 at 29 years old
Andrew Anderson died 31 Oct 1758 at 57 years old and Ann Christie died 7 Feb 1757 at 57 years old.
Andrew is son of William and Isobel. If the above is correct then Isobel born 1688 had her son Andrew in 1701 (I have it 1704) at the age of 13 years! There appear to be no other children born to this couple.
Can you help?
Regards Ruth

Norrie,
Could I trouble you for another look-up...????
Trying to locate more info on my Gt x 4 grandparents, David Pearson & Christian Wylie.
I know they both died before 1869, and brought up their family in Kilconquhar where they were all born, the last being 1816.
David & Christian actually originate from Cameron & Leuchars, but I thought they may have been buried local to their last known home, Rires, Kilconquhar.
Any assistance would be grateful,
Dougie.
-
Hi Dougie
I am a 3rd Great Grandson of David and Christian.
They married on 6 Sep 1799 in Cameron Parish, Fife and I have four children for them: Agnes (1804), David (1806), Christian (11 Mar 1815-11 Mar 1889) and John (abt 1819). I feel certain there are more but I haven't found them as yet!
Christian married Robert John Armit in Westray and Papa Westray Parish, Orkney on 30 Oct 1844 and I have loads of info for them and their 8 children. Robert's family hail from Polduff near St Andrews in Fife.
Feel free to contact me by PM.

Here's another one for anybody who collects Sunters.
In 1820 William Sunter, pipe-layer, married Elizabeth Peebles in Kilconquhar parish. They lived in Main Street, Earlsferry.
William died in 1878, aged 80. His parents were David Sunter, linen-weaver, and Margaret Andrew.

Hi I am researching my husband's family, and some of them go way back in Kilconquhar. The names are Wallace, Wilkie, and Duncan. Specifically, I'd like to know anything about a William Wallace, born 1740-1770, he is listed as father to our last known Wallace relative, George Wallace b. 1791-2.
George's parents are listed as William Wallace and Pauline Wilkie. I think that Pauline is Polly or 'Pally' Wilkie on the baptismal records (b.1762 Kilconquhar), her father was William Wilkie b. 1725. Her mother was Alice Grubb. George Wallace was married to Janet Finlay, she died around 1840. Lastly, Alexander Duncan, listed on a great-aunts marriage record as her father. Her mother was Catherine Wallace, but Catherine was not married to Alex, and did not list him on her kids' birth records. I'd like to find out if he was married to someone else, and when he died. There are 2 Alex Duncan's born in Kilconquhar, one in 1810 and another 1830. If any of these people are on the headstones, I'd really appreciate it. Janice

Thanks Norrie, I think this will be of help to me. The George-Janet-Catherine family is mine, and the Polly Wilkie & Wallace are probably mine too, I just have to find out where they fit. George had a son James who moved to a nearby village and had lots of boys, who had lots of boys, and I actually found a living relative from that line. Thank you for all you do. Janice
-
Norrie, I got 2 dates of death that I needed from your look-up, a half or full sister (Binnie Polly Wilkie) to Grandfather George, and I'm claiming Polly Wallace as his second daughter, as there's a gap between kids that would fit for her, and the naming pattern works better with her in the family. So thank you very, very, much!! Janice

What a very kind offer. Could I trouble you for information on any Kellocks? I've just found a very large branch from Largo dating back to 1712(so far) and would appreciate any help.

Norrie in any of your cemeteries do you have
William Whitehead and his wife Hannah Weir?
Or David Drylie who died in Jan 1876 when he fell down a shaft at Townhill #8 his wife immigrated to the US so the only person who might be on the stone with him would be a 2yr. old son George who died in 1874.
Also looking for the daughter of the above William and Hannah-- Hannah Weir Whitehead and her husband Richard Drylie. I appreciate anything you might have. they all lived in Dunfermline but am not sure where they would have been buried

I wonder if there are any Marrs on any of your lists in the 19th century, though they seem to come from Cameron and Cupar. I will be very grateful,

Hi Bernice sorry can't see a stone for Christina Johnstone
see that John was born in 20.5.1871 Cupar, I take it that Christina
was not married and the 1881 census gives them living at Edenfield Cupar
who did John get married? where does the Moncur part of his name come from ?
and what do later censuses say?
Norrie

Hi Norrie
Thanx for checking that cemetery John married Wilhelmina Clephan and its that family I am researching but just thought I'd try to tie up this mystery of her burial
Sorry for posting an email I forgot its not policy here.
Cheers Bernice

Hi Norrie,
My request is for a more recent transcription (from 2005). I have a photo of a headstone for David Finlayson of New Gilston (son of William and Margaret Finlayson), died 10 October 1988. My cousin, Christian Mary Myles Brown (nee Stewart), daughter of Elizabeth (Betty) Duzel, was buried in the same grave as David at Largo Cemetery on 30 July 2005. I am curious to know what has been written on the headstone of this grave since her burial. Is that possible?
Regards

Hi Norrie,
I'm looking for William Lawrie Simpson & Ann Sharp in Largo cemetery.
Willie was a merchant seaman who possibly died between 1901 & 1905.
Ann Simpson (Sharp) died February 1925, Windygates.
I cannot find a death certificate for William Simpson and I'm hoping there is a headstone with his death details.
Williams parents were James Simpson, died Lundin Links, 1892 and Johan (Hannah) Lawrie died 1910, Lower Largo.

Hi Steve
This is my maternal branch of the big tree.
ALEXANDER SIMSON or LUNDIN was the illegitimate son of Primrose and Philip Alexander Lundie **. He died in Arncroach in the Prish of Kilconquhar on 21 November 1859 and was interred on 22 November, 1859, in Kilconquhar Churchyard, Fife; 'feet 6 yards south of Robert Stewart's headstone'
April 3rd, 1778 OPR for the Parish of Largo, Fife, has this entry:
"Alexr. Simson: Was born Alexander, son to Primrose Simson in St Monance, sometime servant at Strathearly, who gives Alexander Lundin, son to the late Andrew Lundin of Strathearly for the father. Robert Black, Salter in St Monance, stood sponsor for the child who was baptised at the Manse of Largo the 24th of December, 1779. Robert Lessles, Elder of the Family & the Ministers' family witnesses."
A very brave girl, was Primrose, to stand up and name the son of the Laird as father of her child!
** There's some discrepancy here with the reputed father's name but my copy of Robert Alan Lundie Smith's "History of the Clan Lundy, Lundie, Lundin" (The Grimsay Press 2005) has Alexander Lundin as "Philip Alexander Lundin"
Mary died in 1841 at Inchervie in the Parish of Kilconquhar, but I have no interment details for her.
Alexander and Mary had 8 children - 7 daughters and one son.

You're misunderstanding the record. Lathallan is an area in Kilconquhar parish - Lathallan Home Farm and Lathallan Mill are south of Largoward and north of Colinsburgh. Thomas Lindsay would have been a farm labourer at Lathallan, but buried in Kilconquhar churchyard.
The Monumental Inscriptions (pre-1855) for East Fife, published by the Scottish Genealogy Society, lists several Lindsay headstones in that churchyard, but they are all members of the local aristocratic family, the Earls of Crawford and Lindsay.

Where else might a Thomas WHYTE/White and his wife Margaret Sympson be buried in the area? On his daughter's wedding in 1806 it clearly says her father was 'TW of Largo'

Hi Norrie,
Just rejoined this site and wanted to say a huge thanks plus how amazing all your photos and transcriptions were in helping us with our Fife family history from afar in Western Australia. We visited Fife in 1999 and went straight to the Kidd memorials in Newburn and Elie. Later my brother and a 4th cousin visited. Again in 2018, I walked all around the Kilconquhar churchyard when we stayed for a week at what had been the Beadle's cottage opposite. We spent time in Colinsburgh visiting the Kidd's bakery and house, apparently originally the 'Honor Oak' in the corner of Main Street and South Wynd once owned by Margaret Anderson plus enjoyed afternoon tea at 'Mayfield. In Elie, we searched for the site of Kenneth Hutchison's 1846 store owned by his wife Helen Syme and found evidence of the Rankeillor family including William Rainkillor's amazing 1755 memorial.
Thanks so much for your photographic skills and excellent transcribing.
