Title: James Hawkins marriage.
Post by: bucksboy on Monday 03 January 11 22:21 GMT (UK)
Is there any way of checking James Hawkins marriage to Annie Carman in 1883, without getting a cert.

j/a/s 1883. Oxford district. V.3a - P.1095.

I just need to know fathers name if possible.  Mother appears to be Salome Carman(nee.Trotman).

Father maybe Arthur Carman.

Steve. :)

Unless there are any local transcriptions for that period - you would need to know the name of the church they married in to look it up in parish records

The Oxford RD covered a wide area

Hi Steve ...

I can find no record of a CARMAN/TROTMAN marriage on FreeBMD, or anything on the 1881 census for a Arthur and Salome CARMAN.

Searching for a birth registration for an "Annie CARMAN" on FreeBMD before 1870 only brings up one result:

1866 - Annie S. CARMAN - St. George Hanover Square (London)

This Annie appears in the 1871 census living in SGHS, but her parents are James and Hannah.

What is your source for "Salome CARMAN (nee TROTMAN)"?

The source appears to be the 1861 census

There is a submitted IGI entry for the 1883 marriage showing her as Ann Carman b 1859 Chedworth Gloucs

The 1861 has a 2yr old Ann Carman b Chedworth and there is this extracted IGI entry

ANN CARMAN  Christening:  11 SEP 1859   Chedworth, Gloucester
Father:  ALFRED CARMAN  - not Arthur  Mother:  SALOME

They also christened son Joseph Benjamin Carman b 1856 London on the same day.

1861 shows a son Alfred b 1854 London

The 1861 shows mother Salome as married but she is in lodgings without a husband

The 1871 shows her as a widow living in Chedworth with all 3 children.  The 2 boys are shown as b Hoxton Middlesex

Salome Trotman baptised 7.6.1824 Chedworth - parents Thomas & Hannah

1861 shows Salome as 35 and she is 42 in 1871 - b Chedworth

It would be interesting to know what Alfred's occupation was as there is no marriage listed anywhere to a Salome

Births March qtr 1854

Alfred Carman  Shoreditch  1c 183

Births December qtr 1855

Benjamin Carman   Shoreditch  1c 165

Births December qtr 1858

Ann Carman Northleach  6a 317

Many thanks for the help.

I've cobbled the info together from all the bits and pieces that I've found.

Oh well, looks like it'll have to be a cert.

The Northleach birth cert would be favourite.  I'll get the marriage cert afterwards.

Many thanks.

Steve. :)

There is no Alfred Carman death between 1851 -1871 so unless he was a mariner and died at sea - I wonder if he existed

It does make you wonder if he did. ;D

I've got another 3 immaculate conceptions like this, and no chance of finding their father.

Is there anything bigger than a brickwall. ;D

Thanks again.

I have drawn a blank with Alfred Carman as above. I know from oral family history that Alfred was father of Ann and  Joseph and that his wife (or partner!) was Salome . My father was then named Alfred  (b. 1919 Chedworth) after his Grandfather. My father told me there was an Aunt Ann in Oxford but  he didn't know her. The family legend was that there is a family connection with France but no proof of that. I was also told that the family came from London to Chedworth.
