Title: Brookside Seaton Burn - home of Rollo Barrett
Post by: snowydog on Thursday 06 January 11 13:16 GMT (UK)
Does anyone have any information on a house called Brookside that I believe used to be in Seaton Burn near cramlington?

I believe my grandmother was in service there before WW2 and that the house used to be owned by Rollo Samuel Barrett who used to own several mining companies in the area.  Im trying to track down when she might have gone into service and more about the barrett family who she use to work for.

unfortunately im not local to the area so dont know any history about whether it still exists, or was demolished.

All I do know is that in later years she worked in heddon hall, but whether this was for the barretts or not I dont know.

thanks for any information anyone can provide

Rolland Samuel Barrett was the Managing Director of the Haydon Bridge Coal Co. Ltd. A "Brookside" is apparently still in Seaton Burn, see http://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/roger.broughton/family/wedding/index.htm

If you go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and put the coordinates 423782, 573700 in to "Search" it will centre the map on a building called "Brookside Lodge" as it is today. Looking at the earlier maps it is not clear if this is the site of the "Brookside" that was there in the 1930s

Just adding to that info provided by Stan......

R S Barrett in 1923 was a director of Netherton Coal Co, address Brookside, seaton Burn,

Also in 1933.

In 1940 R S Barrett is both chairman and managing director of NCC ( or to be more accurate R S Barrett is name of both c/m and m/d) Address now  Heddon Hall, Heddon on the Wall.

In 1947, when coal industry is nationalised, no Barrett is listed as official of NCC.

Hello. I know this was written a long time ago but I can help! My great grandfather was Rollo Barrett and my grandmother Eve Brims was born and brought up at Brookside. She is still alive and living in Northumberland. Let me know if you want me to ask her anything. Best wishes, Caroline

Hi Caroline, thanks so much for replying on this. Yes my original post was indeed some time ago, but Im still very interested in finding out more.

Im thrilled that your grandmother is still alive, I met her a few times when I was younger and we visited Mrs Brims at Heddon Hall. Originally this used to be with my grandma, Esther Gibson and then after she died with my father John Davison (also now deceased).

My original post was an effort to find out more about my grandmas service with your family, first at Brookside and then later (I think) at Heddon Hall.

Im not sure whether your grandma will remember me, but please do pass on my very best wishes and I would be delighted to hear about anything she remembers about my grandma Esther and her time with the family.

Thanks so much again for replying

Best

Gareth

Hi there. I know this was written a number of years ago but wanted to let you know that I actually live at Brookside. We have had visits from various members of the Barrett’s and enjoy finding out about the history of our home. The house has now been split into 3 dwellings but it still has a lot of the original features, including the air raid shelter under the rear of the house. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you wish any further information.
