Hello, I am an Audoire descendant and trying with out much success to identify a good number of pics dating back to around 1900 . At this time several branches of Audoires from both Alderney and Guernsey emigrated to Sheffield. A colony was formed.
I have recently posted a similar request on the Guernsey Forum with some pics.
I feel this is about my last attempt after several years of effort. I really felt as though I had to try since many of the pics would be forever a mystery.
Likewise a Refugee group was formed and there is little documented evidence apart from my pics etc.
Please advise

I note there are six (or so) Audoire members in Sheffield in the 1911 census. There is an excellent site "Picture Sheffield" run by the library with thousands of Sheffield images - but there is no reference to the family in the index. Might be worth a look, though.

Hi Andrew,
I think you have a sheffield name?
I think I have explored all avenues in Sheffield and accounted for the Audoires here. The unusual name helps. The problem is identifying the Channel Island ones.
I imagined that there could still could be descendents who could identify their relatives. We are only talking grandfathers or great grandfathers. (particularly re.WW2 evacuees)
There must be photographs elsewhere that can be cross referenced and also the C.I. are small and people close knit.
I use picture Sheffield and also "Sheffieldhistory" I have had great leads there.
Thanks for your interest.
Kind regards

Apologies on two counts. Firstly, for getting your name wrong (!) and, secondly, for misunderstanding your query. Am I right in thinking you are looking for remaining Audoires in CI, coming from the Sheffield direction? In that case, I cannot really help as you seem to have used all the right sources.
I do have a Sheffield name - I can trace my line back to the Ecclesfield Machens in 1560 and was born in Sheffield (but I now live in SW France). My wife's family is solidly Jersey (she is a de Ste Croix) and we are going there again next month for more genealogy, as there is little pre-1841 on the net. Much of what there is stems from Ancestry-style "supposition" rather than solid evidence. Is there an Audoire connection to Jersey - if so, I'll have a look at what is around next month.

Hi Andrew,
I dont know if you had my name wrong. anyhow its michael dyson but mothers name audoire.
I am really looking for any Audoires, or anyone, who can help with a fair number of photos. Otherwise useless for posterity.
Do you know of a Peter Machin, Sheffield local history buff?

Hi Mike
Couple of questions.
Where are the pics?
Are you on Facebook (sorry)?
The reason why I ask is because there are two (closed) groups on Facebook. One call Jersey Temps Passe and the other Jersey Family Tree. The former specialises in collecting old Jersey photographs and giving the history of the location. They have possibly over 1,000 photos and I am sure they may be able to help. The latter specialises in Jersey Family History and giving advice and if needed (paid) research.

Hi
Jen and Stuart
I posted a few on the Guernsey forum but with no answers, tried Alderney Library-Museum? but uninterested, years ago now.
Stuart- the pics will only relate to Alderney and Guernsey, the later is where my Grandfather came from. (You may know Alderney was probably the base for Audoires) There is a site, Channel Islands and the Great War, they put some pics on.
I have however been trying to put something together about WW2 refugees in Sheffield which does include Jersey. Some people there that I dont know. I put a group pic on the Guernsey forum, no response.
I am on face book, look for the badger. How about you Jen?
Thanks
Mike

Hi Stuart
Not seen the book, do you know if there is any mention of Sheffield? There were not that many evacuees possibly because it was a bit of a target

I'll get back to you.

Hi Mike
Further to my comment about the evacuee book, I have been in touch with the author and this is what he told me:
There are no Audoires in the book and none of the families in the book went to Sheffield, at least not initially. The most popular initial destinations were Bradford, Bolton and Wakefield but a few went to where they had relatives, mostly London, the West Country and the South Coast (in some cases out of the frying pan into the fire!). Many also moved about and some may well have ended up in Sheffield.
There were almost 5,000 evacuees and I have only the stories of about 150 of them, i.e. circa 50 families. A significant number made their own travel arrangements, a small number actually evacuating by air and on the scheduled mail boat services whereas those who went on 20/21 June went on a ‘fleet’ of available ships, mainly cargo boats, at no cost although they were limited in what they could take. My own parents booked to travel on the Southern Railway mail boat to Southampton. I still have their sailing ticket (the maritime equivalent of an airline boarding pass) and it is dated 4 July 1940 – four days after the Germans invaded and six days after the last mail boat, the Isle of Sark, sailed to Southampton.

Hi Stuart,
Thanks for that, do any of these names relate to Jersey? Pity I cant send pics, they will still be on the Guernsey forum I guess, under Audoire.
Names mentioned and others who may appear in photo or I think may be otherwise connected
Mr C.A.U Rose Hon,Sec. (the one holding the shield?)
Mr E.J.Audoire Vice chair Mrs S.J.Audrain
W H. Gile
R.Wilks-Green
Phylis Streader.
Mrs W.Soudain Mrs D.Pontin
Possibly dePutrons who were related by marriage to EJ Audoire.

I can only suggest searching the Jersey Archive web-site. There are a number of Audoires Occupation Registration Cards.

Hi,
I have just seen this thread. I am an Audoire in Sheffield, with quite a big family too! The oldest Audoire I know is Clifford Audoire who is around 86 ish (my grandad). He had 7 children, so this line of the family is quite big.
I can probably ask around for more info though as my knowledge is lacking!
