Title: Does anyone need help with brickwalls (that don't require offsite )**complete**
Post by: Thamesite2017 on Tuesday 11 January 11 03:59 GMT (UK)
Any folks need second opinions/help with their new zealand research?

We seem quiet on topics that people can help from their homes/computers/at home resources..so I thought I'd add a thread.

Who are you trying to chase/sort out this year.

I'm always on the lookout for any new people following my main families.
Anyone connected with the BARKERS who first settled at Mahurangi, the CORNES, PASCOES and VERCOES who came to the Thames Valley?  ??? would love to hear from you, hoping to get a book published in the near future - THAT IS MY GOAL for 2011

I have not had any luck finding the immigration details for:

Herman Nielsen b. 1859 Denmark
Mary Nielsen nee Miller b. 1859 Scotland
Herman b. 1881 Scotland
Isabella b. 1882 Scotland

I believe they arrived in NZ 1882 or 1883 (according to death cert/burial records and the next child is born in 1885 in NZ)

Also the immigration details for

James Ogilvie Mackie b. 1890 Egypt (English)
travelled to NZ around 1911-1914 from England
any help would be appreciated

Thanks

John

May I be cheeky and ask for the shipping details of my grandparents?  They are on Findmypast but no money at the moment to buy credits.
They will be under Tew.  Cecelia and Harold.  Granddad had to debunk in Auckland for the Army and Nana arrived in Wellington, this will be about May 1919.

after some searching, I found that Herman Nielsen was an engineer on a Steamboat which regulary shipped passengers to and from Scotland to Australia and New Zealand from 1881 till 1885. Presumably he thought NZ was a good place to move and in 1883 received his certificate of engineers competency no. 98 on 20 Aug. 1883 2nd class Wellington NZ, then sent for his wife (or she came on one of his ships around 1883-1885)

Here is a new one for you all.

John Lyall born 1859 Scotland married Amelia Liabeau probably in Pigeon Bay Canterbury, as no date has been found.

John died 14 July 1931 and is buried in Bromley Cemetery, Christchurch.

I know they had one daughter by the name of Rose Ethel in 1884.

My main problem is when and where did Amelia die?  Did she remarry after John's death and took on another name?
She has just despaired.

Any help please.

Totally puzzled by this lady.  Think her father was John Libeau.

Rose Ethel or Ethel Anne she was sometimes known, married a Herbert Thomas Clements abt 1912 who happened to be the Mayor of Otahuhu.  He died in London a day before coming home to New Zealand, but not certain on the date, it will be after her death date of 1953, and I think he remarried.
It would be nice to make contact with any relations of hers to sort out what really happened.

Yes there was a number of Hall's living in Pigeon Bay in the mid to late 1800's.  I wonder if she had Ethel out of wed-lock to John Lyall then married a Hall?

Suzy

The IGI (@ FamilySearch), has the following birth entry :

LIBEAU - Amelia

Born :     1862
At:    Akaroa

Parents:   Joseph LIBEAU & Mary Ann HEDGEMAN

It seems a very good match for Amelia HALL (also born circa 1862).

Hi Suzy

The marriage for Rose Ethel shows as follows on NZ BDM online.  (Interestingly, it only comes up if you search on grooms name ??)   ::)

1912

Hubert* Thomas CLEMENTS
Ethel Rose LIBEAU - c.k.a.  LYALL

It appears that the husband's first name was "Hubert"  (rather than "Herbert") ... but seems from Rose's headstone inscription, that he was known as "Thomas".  ;D

I'm guessing that you already have a note of Rose's burial at Otahuhu Cemetery?   (Her headstone gives the names of her son and daughter).

The plot next to Rose's, gives information for an ashes burial for a "Herbert Thomas CLEMENTS - died 8 October 1955 - aged 69 years".
The M/I though reads ... " ILMO  Hubert [sic] Thomas CLEMENTS"  ....
{The [sic] seems to have been inserted by the transcriber of this record ? }

As there is no record of a death in NZ for this "Hubert" or "Herbert" CLEMENTS, it seems then to fit the story you have that this man died in England.

Post by: Lucy2 on Thursday 13 January 11 01:48 GMT (UK)
continued   ...

Hubert (Herbert) Thomas CLEMENTS :

Archives New Zealand (Auckland Office) also have a probate record for the following (which very likely is the man buried at Otahuhu Cemetery) ?

CLEMENTS - Hubert Thomas
Bucklands Beach - Builder - 1955

Thanks Lucy.

You have dug up a bit more than what I could find.
The other child of Rose was Jean Clements.
Yes I did have Hurbert, then I thought this must be a mistake and should be Herbert.  He was born in Tasmania. I would presume he was cremated and returned to New Zealand?

I am a little puzzled to why Rose took on the name Lyall, when her mother married a Hall and her birth under Libeau, a lady with many names.

Born Abt. 1860 England
Died Abt. 06 May 1925 Gisborne, New Zealand

Married Abra Mary Frances Harrison 1895

Had 4 children to her

He had at least 2 other children to a previous relationship with a Maori lass know as either Teo Harepe Tamati or Rutu Te Onarepe Tamati.  Neither of these children had his last name but went by the last name of Fox.

No idea who his parents are or where he was born or when he came to NZ.  I have found references to his at Archives and at Papers Past saying he was a trustee.

Have found his burial on the Gisborne Council Cemetery Search.

this is a great thread Althea.

It is amazing what a second (or 3rd, 4th, 5th) set of eyes can do for a brickwall - different spellings, search techniques, resources etc has really shed light on things for a lot of people. I know that it is easy to give up when you hit a brickwall but all it takes is a little success and you are on your way again.

Keep up the great work!     :)

I would be interested in your connections with this family tree.
