Title: Coker Family in Essex
Post by: hallsenna on Saturday 15 January 11 15:58 GMT (UK)
Hello all
Having got hooked on finding out more about my forbears I am now in the process of tracing my family tree. The family name is Coker and I have traced it back to a John Coker of Orsett in Essex in the mid-1800's. Any assistance gratefully received.

HI,

We can go back further with John Coker -is that what you would like??

Post by: hallsenna on Monday 17 January 11 21:53 GMT (UK)
yes, please. I know my grandfather, Robert George Coker (1918 to 2007), told me his grandmother's name was Fanny so figured these had to be the family. Cokers were in Orsett until 1983 when my great-grandmother Ellen died and the remainder were either in Grays or overseas. Any assistance to go further back would be great.

Title: Re: Coker Family in Essex
Post by: suzard on Monday 17 January 11 23:07 GMT (UK)
It's Coker on every other census

possibly the enumerator just spelled phonetically

personally I never think there is a correct spelling of any surname - baptisms are just written as heard -or misheard in some cases

1841 census

did you know this differs from other census ?

There are no relationships given
Ages are rounded down on adults 15+ years to the nearest 5 yrs (e.g. someone age given 15 could be between 15-19(somtimes people think there are twins or even triplets in the fmily -as there are 2 or more children age 15 in the 1841 census
also only Yes or no is given in answer to whether they were born in the county they were living in -unless they were b Scotland (answer would be S) Ireland (I) or F = Foreign parts

1841
maybe John's father - and possibly he was previously married?

I really appreciate this. I have tracked down a signifianctpart of my mothers side of the family (originally from Canada) and am keen to trace the male line for the Cokers back as far as practical.

If you are looking for birth reg -don't forget official registration did not begin until Sept qtr 1837 -and even then some didn't register

You have to llok for Parish records of Baptisms - and be a little flexible with age - as some weren't necessarily baptised shortly after birth
on some baptism records  the actual birth date is given too - but be prepared -one of my ancestors was "born Spring" "baptised the day after the first stone of the chapel was laid "

I ended up researching the chapel too!!!!!

Will have another little look around before I go

If you want parents etc coming forward  just ask and I will look up those tomorrow -unless some other RootsChatter finds anything

We are a friendly lot on here and usually all help out

My immediate family details are
Grandfather - Robert George Coker (dob 18/01/1918 died 2007)
grandmother - Silvia Ingle (dob N/K died 1983)
i would be interested in hearing from anyone who may be linked to my tree through one of the family names. I use GenesReunited and am happy to link trees

it is RootsChat policy to not post details of the living/maybe living/recently deceased - identity theft etc -so it may be best to remove details of anyone who fits into that category

Brilliant -it is always good to get info from family.

Just take it steady and systematically work through the info

There's no rush -it won't go away!!!

I'll leave posting more for a while so you can digest this info.

You have a pretty easy to find family -they stayed close - it doesn't always happen that way!!!

If you are unsure about anything -just ask

what is really strange is that my mother has just informed me that we bought one of the family houses in Arthur Street, Grays, in the 1970's and my Great grandmother was still living in Baker Street, Orsett, into the 1980's and then to discover the Finsbury, Kent, connection (I think it is Frindsbury) and we have a house there now! :D
Title: Re: Coker Family in Essex
Post by: suzard on Tuesday 18 January 11 11:47 GMT (UK)
It's quite amazin what draws you to places associated with ancestors

I found my g g grandfather's grave by accident

Visiting a cemetery on mother's day and suddenly heavy rain started - I ran for shelter -head down and went smack into a six foot high headstone. I just stood looking at it in a daze and then realised it was my GG grandparents and a married daughter of theirs - the cemetery was in the next county to where I thought they would be buried!!!!

I think you are correct with Frindsbury
Wrotham has been entered as Rotherham Kent in one census too!!!!
Sometimes the writing is very difficut to read - but then so is mine!!!!!

Been a busy few days as have discovered a completed family tree on my mothers maternal side 9Way family) already done and verified back to 1583 with the family moving from Dorchester in England to Dutchess County, Long Island in America (first records in 1616), through the American War for Independence (where the family split) then our side of the family (the loyalists) received a land grant in Ontario after the war and moved there until my Great-Grandfather came to england in WW1 then married my Great-Grandmother (a Costen in Thurrock) and the rest is history! Now to see what else can be achieved! I am really enjoying this!

Well done - you willl find your tree will never be finished
There' all the siblings and what happened to them to find out about -and all kinds of different resources to explore

I will see if I can find more about Louisa Clark if you wish????

Hi Hallsenna well you have got the rooters working overtime, there are a small band of people all over the world who are looking at the Suffolk/Essex/London Cokers if you pm me I will give you the email of Brian Coker in Canada who is running it,in your search round the net do not confuse the Cokers in Devon as being part of the Essex/Suffolk ones .
