Katy Hooper of the Gypsy Collections, University of Liverpool, tells me that they have today published their complete collection of photos by Fred Shaw online here:
http :// sca.lib.liv.ac . uk/ead/html/gb141smgcshaw-p2.shtml
http://sca-arch.liv.ac.uk/ead/html/gb141smgcshaw-p1.shtml(*)
If you click on the links in the left-hand Contents panel, you can see thumbnails of 300+ digitised photos, mainly of British Romany families, with names, locations and dates. The photos date from the 1890s to the 1940s.
There are also some photos of Greek, Gallician and Belgian Gypsies who travelled through Britain on their way to the USA in the early 20th century.
Hope you find an ancestor's portrait here.
Best wishes
Sharon

Hi citizen smith, thanks for the link at the uni, i found a picture of my dad and gran, but the picture is so tiny?
any idea how to access it?
thanks
-
Hi Marona
You can visit the Gypsy Collections to take a look at the photos. There's no charge. You just need to make an appointment. You'll find them very friendly and welcoming.
Or you can download an order form and get a copy of the photo done in the size of your choice and posted to you. Obviously, there's a charge for that. You'll find info about the copying service here:

would you know where abouts the collections are? is it london
thank you for sharing them with us ;D

Hello
The Collection's held in Liverpool. You can look at them there in person (at no cost). Or you can order copies of any photo by post using a form that you download from the website. There's a charge for a print.
I've been in touch with the Special Collections Librarian to see if there are any other options now that these photos have been digitised. I'll share her answer when I hear.

Surely this isn't the whole collection...when i spoke to Katy sometime last year i'm sure she told me that the collection was a lot bigger than 300 photos....when you deduct the photos of the Gallician, Greek and Belgian gypsies, there aren't many left at all!!!!!
-
Hi
No - this isn't the whole collection, only the photos taken by Fred Shaw.

hi sharon,
and thank you for info and details.
i have ordered photos previously and they have been great but was just saying its a shame not to see the faces of some group photos as they dont list all the names and you never know if your "kin" are in that picture somewhere :) (she says ever-so-hopefully ;D )
a.
p.s unsure of when ill ever get to liverpool............. but would really like to one day!

Hello
I think the problem is that Fred Shaw probably never knew or recorded the names of all the people he photographed.
We just have to be grateful that he captured these moments – and these faces – for posterity. I've been lucky enough to find two close family members in the collection. Without Fred, I would have nothing from the generation born in the 1850s.

thanks

Hi Marona
I've just tried the link from this site and a couple of sites and it doesn't seem to be working from anywhere. So I checked the Liverpool University Special Collections 'home page' to find this message:
<<We apologise for the intermittent access to the archives finding aids due to a technical problem we are working to resolve. Please email scastaff@liv.ac.uk or ring 0151 794 2696 for help locating material.>>
Suggest you contact them or try the link again in a couple of days.

hi citisen smith i cant open this link for liverpool university photos
-
Hi
The University has obviously moved the Fred Shaw page in the past few years. Here's the current link:
http://sca-arch.liv.ac.uk/ead/html/gb141smgcshaw-p1.shtml
Sharon
-
??? Ye tried that link, Sharon?
-
Hi Steve
Yes - just tried it as above and it takes me straight to the right page of the University of Liverpool website...
Sharon
-
How do ye actually open a photo then, please? I failed miserably. I managed to find the live links, to the right. But, they just took me to some sort of home page. Why I asked.
Granted; I'm not the sharpest knife. But, I couldn't manage it.
Thanks.

It looks like these pages now contain a catalogue of the Fred Shaw photos, with brief descriptions, but the images themselves aren't visible on screen any longer.
Perhaps the University has changed its policy in the past 5 years. Or it may be a temporary technical issue on the website? Might be worth checking with the Special Collections team tomorrow.
