Title: PEAREY
Post by: john42 on Wednesday 19 January 11 19:55 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am a relative newcomer to family history research and am studying my wife's father's family. My wife's great grandparents were Michael PEAREY (b. 1833 in Newcastle) and Jane VINTON (b. 23 Sep 1833 in Gateshead). They had 10 children.

I would like to learn about Michael's ancestors and would welcome any information.

Thanks

John42

Hi John and welcome to Rootschat.

It looks like Jane and Michael married in dec qtr 1854 in Newcastle upon Tyne 10b 16.  Michael has been indexed as PEARCY.

Getting the marriage cert will confirm Michael's father's name and profession.

In 1851, Michael is with his brother and his family in Byker.  Michael gives his place of birth as Byker.

In 1841, it looks as if Michael is with his parents - although as the 1841 census does not give family relationships you need extra evidence to back that up.

Thomas Peary  45  Smith
Mary Peary  40
Thomas Peary  15  app shipwright
Elizabeth Peary  15
Mary Peary 13
Jane Peary 11
Michael Peary 7
Esther Peary 3

All born in county (Northumberland).

Remember that in the 1841 census, all ages between 15 and 60 were rounded down to the nearest 5.

Looking at the IGI, there are 2 birth records for a Michael Pearey bn +/-1 1833.  One is born to Thomas Pearey and Mary Theeble (bap 16 Dec 1833, Newcastle) and the other to Thomas Pearey and Mary Shevel (19 Mar 1832, Newcastle).

The only Esther Pearey birth record is to Thomas Peary and Mary Therval (4 Jun 1838, Newcastle), making me wonder whether Mary Theeble and Mary Sheval are the same person.

Other Pearey children from IGI:
Jane Peary - 7 Sept 1829 (Thomas Peary and Mary Sheawell)
Mary Ann Peary - 14 Jan 1828 (Thomas Peary and Mary Shevele)
Elizabeth Peary - 9 Jan 1826 (Thomas Peary and Mary Sheaver)
Thomas Peary - 4 Jan 1824 (Thoas Peary and Mariae - at St Andrews RC, Newcastle upon Tyne)
Anna Peary - 5 May 1822 (Thoas Peary and Mariae - St Andrews RC)
Grace Peary - 23 May 1820 (Tho. Peary and Mary Shevill - St Andrews)

It looks as if Thomas Peary (the shipwright) married Elizabeth Vinton - any relation to Michael's wife?

(sept qtr 1845 Newcastle Upon Tyne 25 306)

Hi Spidermonkey

Many thanks for your informative posts - you included several useful tips such as rounding ages down to nearest 5 in early census records.

I suspect that Michael's father was Thomas Pearey but have no hard evidence so will need to follow your suggestion and obtain copy of Michael's marriage certificate.

I had come across PEAREY / PEARCY and THEEBLE / SHEVAL anomalies and realise these can only be resolved by obtaining relevant certificates.

Maybe we can communicate again when I have resolved these various issues?

Hi Spidermonkey

You may recall that we had an exchange on the PEAREY family about 6 months ago.

Since then I have been sidetracked with my wife's health problems (now hopefully improving) but I have acquired a copy of Michael's marriage certificate which shows his trade as 'smith'. His father is shown as Thomas PEAREY. Some of the other information is hard to decipher.

I tried to attach a copy of the marriage certificate to this message but it was rejected. If agreeable to you, could I send it to you as attachment to an e-mail? In which case, please let me know your e-mail address. You may be able to glean more from certificate than I can?

Regards

Hi Spidermonkey

Doubt if you remember me but we had some exchanges regarding the Pearey family. In one of yours, you inquired whether Thomas Pearey married Elizabeth Vinton: I have prepared a family tree which shows that is the case. Copy of FT attached.
I note that you are based in Herefordshire: I lived there in the late 1960 and then my wife and I from 1842 to 1989.
Apologies for being slow in replying but health problems persist.

Regards

John Everett

Hi John, good to hear from you again although I am sorry to hear that health problems persist.  Still, the beauty of family tree research is that it is a hobby that can be put down and picked up again when time and life allows - it's not as if the relatives are going anywhere!

If you get stuck or need suggestions as to how you can prove info, just remember to give a yell.  There are loads of people here on RC who will happily leap in a give you a hand!

As for Herefordshire, it probably hasn't changed much since you left in 1989!  Still arguing over the need for a bypass and still watching the river flood the rowing club - however it is also still the most beautiful place to live (in my opinion!) so we put up with things!!

Hi John
I see that this is a very old thread. I just wanted to drop you a line to say that I am also a relative of Michael Pearey and Jane Vinton. My maternal grandmother was a Pearey. Let me know if you’re still researching.

All the best
Fiona
