My great Grand father went on a voyage to Gibraltar on a Yacht named Chiripa, the owners name was A.J corry alias the Commodore, I have the book written about the Voyage written by one of the crew members, I would love to find out any information on the crew of the Chiripa. I am not sure if A.J.Corry name was Alfred but its the only name I could find and I know there is a Life boat named after him. thanks for any help you can give me. Christine.

Hi
The Southwold Museum gives you a start on the basic information on Alfred
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0bg7/
His obituary (scroll down)
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0bg8/
Is there any indication in the book that the men were friends of Alfred or local Suffolk men or a mixture?
Have you contacted Southwold Museum to see if they have any further information on Alfred and any voyages he made?
Regards
Valda

I did write to the museum but did mot get a reply, might try again, I know the yacht was built in Ipswich and my g grand father came from Suffolk, not sure about the rest will have to look through book again. I think the yacht was in some races, but that is all.

My great grandfather was Walter John Orvis from Aldeburgh. We have in the family a vesta box with the following inscription
"From AJC to Captain J W Orvis
Chiripia
1884-1885
1886-1891
To Bordeau and back
To Gilbralter and back
To Norway and back"
Understand that he was the skipper of Chiripia. She was owned by Alfred John Corry, Essex House, West Hill, Putney.
Where did you get the marvellous book? I am attaching photo of vesta casse.

Wow have been away for a few weeks and just found your message, at last another link to Chripa, My Auntie had the book and I found a copy in America and paid $200 Australian for it. I lived in Arthurs house as my Dad moved there after his Grandparents deaths and it was named Chiripa and I believe there was a model boat as well but never saw it. I have enclosed a link for you to look at and I will try and find the site where the photos from the book were, if not I will try and scan the photos in my book. Good to hear from you, Christine.

Hi again just realised the other link was already up, do you know which one is your Great Grandfather?
-
Hi
Managed to get the book online and have now read it. It was lovely to find a connection to Orvis. I live only an hour from Aldeburgh and visited it many times when my father was alive. Am attaching a picture of Walter John Orvis although on the vesta case they have his initials the wrong way round.

Thanks very much, my dream is to visit Aldeburgh as all my Dads side of the family came from there, but as I live in Australia now, not sure when I will get back to England, glad I helped you find some new info and I can now put a face to the name, just wish my Great Grandfather"s name was mentioned more in the book but he was only a cabin boy. Bye for now Christine.

Could Mr Underhill be the Thomas Underhill born c.1853 Dean Priory Devon Tea Dealer who is visiting Walter Whittard Tea dealer in 1881 who went on to start Whittard of London Tea.
Thomas married Walters sister Catherine and in 1891 living in Wandsworth they have an engineer as a visitor.
