Title: Polson family
Post by: GeorgeRP on Saturday 29 January 11 06:05 GMT (UK)
Hi every-one,

Would any-one have any information on  a John Polson b: circa 1768, who married a Margaret McLeod, circa 1790. I'm presuming they lived in the Sutherland area of Scotland, due to the birth of their son their

They had one son, William, that I know of b: circa 1791 in Sutherland Scotland. He in turn married a Betty McKay prior too 1813.

These Ancestors are as far back I can go in my tree, [on my Great Grand-mother'side], and am just hoping that some-one might be able to provide some more specific dates to what I have stated. [I'm lucky too have what I have].

Who were Margaret McLeod's parents, and when was she born, the same goes for Betty McKay.

Hope you can help.

George

According to Family Search they married in Kildonan on 16 Aug 1790. Kildonan is where my ggg-grandmother, Isabella Polson, came from. She was born c1772 and her address at marriage was given as Corag, Kildonan. I have not been able to establish her parents as there were a number of Polsons in Kildonan at that time , who seem to have moved away during the clearances.

What Child of William and Betty are you descended from?
Did they emigrate and when?
Do you have them on any Scottish Census?

One thing that might be a problem tracing back further than John Polson, if he was originally from Kildonan, is that Old Parish Register entries for Kildonan only seem to start from 1791 for births and for marriages, 1790 (John and Margaret's marriage and children look to have been just in time!). See individual IGI batch codes for Kildonan here http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountySutherland.htm#K

There is a John POLSON born c 1766 on the 1841 Census and interestingly there are McKays in the same Household. It may be not related as McKay is a common name.

Polsons from Kildonan moved down to Latheron Parish in Caithness, including my ggg-grandmother, and there are still families of them living there today. You can find posts regarding them on the genealogy pages on www.caithness.org.

I am an American relative of Polsons in Helmsdale.  My great great realative female marrued a Sutherland male and lived in Dunrobin.  I have visited Helmesdale with my mother and traced  our Polson relatives tombstones with pencil and paper. We also met with a local Helmsdale Polson. We also visited Dunrobin Castle as a previous relative.  I'm proud of our heritage. I'm told I'm from the McKay clan.  I don't know much more but I'm very proud to be a Scot.
Thanks, Jesse D. Draper
