Marriage/children and death of:
Alfred James Quarrell b. Dec qtr 1856, Islington, London of parents George and Sarah.
Arrived Melbourne on board the Parsee in May 1858.
and Henrietta Quarrell, b. Camperdown, VIC 1873 possibly to the same parents.

In various online trees, there is a mention of an Alfred Quarrell marrying a Martha Jane Mason. If possible, would you be able to check if and where she comes into the picture.

Ann Crawford had been married to a Carl Valdemar Theodore Serrurier - he died in a mining disaster, along with 21 other men at the Australasia mine in Creswick in Dec 1882.
Elizabeth Alice Quarrell is a first cousin to the Elizabeth Quarrell who married Pearcival Hawker.
Are there two Henrietta Quarrells?
An online tree has Henrietta Minnie b1873 m George Edward Barry as you, Sue and Alison have and has her dying in 1959 in Bairnsdale.
The tree also has a Henrietta born to Ann Crawford Quarrell possibly with an unnamed father b. c1870 and dying 1882 Creswick #11421
Now for another 100mls of rain today :o

re Henrietta Quarrell
Henrietta Quarrell (re-named Serrurier) born 1871, Victoria, Australia to Ann Quarrell (daughter of George & Sarah Quarrell) and unknown father.
Ann married Carl Waldemar Theodore Serrurier (known as William) 3 January, 1871, Creswick in a Wesleyan ceremony. Ann & Carl (William) went on to have another seven children, the last one, Albert Edward Serrurier, being born after his father had died in the 1882 Mining Disaster at Creswick.
Henrietta Quarrell, now Henrietta Serrurier died in the same year aged 12. Widow Ann remarried in 1886 to miner Robert Duncan Wartnaby.
I am currently researching the Serrurier family. Their German and French lineage according to a family memoir in the 1880's goes back to General Serrurier, one of Napoleon's illustrious generals.

Mary Martha Helen Quarrell was my grandmother.
She was an adopted child in the Quarrell family.
This adoption was always known but the true parents are not known.
Mary married George Hawthorne Wells

Emily Butters birth is recorded as Chaston as her mother was not married to Butters at the time. It is also mis-transcribed.
Australian Birth Index 1788-1922.
Emily Chuston (should be Chaston) Abt 1862
Birthplace: Cays, Vic (should be Daylesford, Vic)
Father: Chuston (in fact was Butters)
Mother: Mary Chuston
Reg: 14086
Mary Martha Helen Quarrell was raised as the first child of Emily Butters and Alfred James Quarrell. Family stories suggested she may have been an adopted child in this family.
Recent DNA match analysis supports the fact that her biological mother was Emily Butters, but Alfred James Quarrell could not be her biological father. Her biological father is likely to be a member of the Iles/Johnson family of Creswick.

You appear to have taken your information from Ancestry indexes.
This is from my resource which is the same as the online Vic bdm's. The information was transcribed from the registers and to be fair some of the writing is almost illegible. It appears Emily was illegitimate.

Thank you for your clarification of the differences in records. We actually have the original birth record, but I do not wish to share that information in this forum, as the registry record is sufficient. You are correct Emily was born out of wedlock.
