If you google  "HMS Vivid"   you will see a whole load of links.   Apparently there was a Sub called HMS Vivid during WW1,  so,like you say we need to also date the uniform  or age of the sailor.

Are there any marks or writing on the back of the photo?

Dave, have you any ideas yourself when the photo dates from, WW1  or WW2?

During WW2  sailors stopped wearing ships names on their hat bands for security reasons.

Sorry there is nothing written on the back of the photo, it was in a small album, actually messures 6.5cm x 4cm. Trouble is the album comes from Boston Massachusettes, and although I was once told I had relations in US or Canada I have no one I can check this with now. Thanks for the replies though.

can you deduce the date from any other photos in the album?

Aha, I have now taken all the photos out of the album and there is one writing on the back of one photo, although at the moment it dosn't make sense, there is an address that could point to this other picture, which is of a female, being around 1916. Would this be any help. Many thanks to all.

Do a google search for Submarine HMS Vivid  during WW1

The uniform is definately not World War II -  it's the WW1 era.
HMS VIVID was the Devonport Naval Barracks and was later renamed HMS DRAKE.

Submarine was launched in 1943.
Do you have a date for the photo.

There where ships of an earlier date, prior to the land establishment.

Wow, thanks for all your help, I'll have to sift through all you have sugested. I would imagine from some posts that this is WW1, and would seem to be land based HMS VIVID, but I don't know yet what this means. Was it a stepping stone to somewhere else, a reserve base, did people from here actually go to war. Maybe some of the other sites you have sugested will explain this, bit thanks so much to all for everything so far.

I think it would be correct to say that there was a Signals School at HMS VIVID, but there were plenty more organisations within.

A training base as far as I can see. I have looked before because my grandfathers brother was there. He was not a signaller. He went from there to a seagoing vessel. Is there no indication of when the photo was taken, the clothing certainly seems to be early, but you can see  the similarities of dress in this photo, taken in the 1930s [the person on the left in the photo was born 1909]

Many thanks everyone, unfortunately I have no idea when the photo was taken, or who it is, but as it was in my late mothers photo collection I have to assume it is a relative. I know this may not be navy, but, the attached photo was also in the same album. On the back of this photo it says 'Seamans Studio's, Bristol and as my family are from Bristol this may all tie in. Anyway don't know if this photo may help in any way.

Looks like army to me. Probably best if you start a new thread with this photo asking for help finding soldiers details. Why did people not put any notes on the photo's.

Tell me about it, I have found a whole host of photos who I am fairly sure are relatives, but I have no one to ask about them. Still thanks once again for everyones help.

Hi Dave Just noticed your request for info about HMS Vivid. Accordinging to my dad's naval documents, he served in Vivid from April 1929 to January 1921. He was a Chief Stoker and at that time Vivid was the stokers training school.  Vivid used to be the Iron Duke (so it says in dads docs!)

Hi Regarding the Photo of the two young men John and someone else I think the person on the left is my great uncle Samuel Lincoln I have another photo of him and both photos look like the same person Samuel served until around 1928 on the ship HMS Vivid Hope this helps thanks

Hi Xemonsus, My uncle John was stationed at Vivid 7-Sept-1927 to 15-Oct-1928. Looks like they knew each other. Small world.

Hi Youngtug  Thanks for replying so quick, I got the date wrong, I thought he served until 1928, he actually did serve longer than that. I couldn't believe it when I stumbled on the photo, it came as a great surprise I now want to show other members of my family. However uncle Sam was born in Stranraer Wigtown Scotland in Jan 1902 and joined the navy around about 1920/21 I think,  if its of any use to you his number was J93740 Samuel Lincoln you might be able to research I do also have another photo of him when he had just joined but on a different ship he also sevred on a ship called Impregnable but seem then to spend a lot of time on the training ship Vivid 1 again if you are interested you can have a copy with pleasure hope this info helps you with any research if you are doing any on your uncle John take care. Craig
