Title: Map of St Kentigern's Cemetery, 951 Balmore Road, Glasgow please
Post by: kieran257 on Sunday 06 February 11 02:14 GMT (UK)
Hi All,

I am hoping that someone can help me.  I need a map or the graveyard  of St Kentigern's Cemetery, 951 Balmore Road, Glasgow to help locate the grave of my grandfathers brother.

I have the grave reference etc but I don't know what way the graves are numbered.

Or maybe someone can tell me what way the graveyard is numbered so that I can find the grave.

I am completing all this research for an elderly auntie who would love for me to find the grave and hopefully find a headstone.

Thanks for all your help and assistance

Kieran

Hi Kieran,

Lost your personal e-mail address (when Santa brought me a new laptop).

E-mail me, which will give me your e-mail address and I'll send you a Section Map of St. Kentigern's.

It's not that great, but at least it identifies the sections.

You're quite right Harry although there's a vehicular entrance straight into St. K's about 100 yards down the road from the entrance to the West Nec.

I've been playing with maps again, and have marked both vehicular entrances with blue dots, and the original entrance to Lambhill with a red X.

The simplest way (I've found) is to turn off Balmore Road at the traffic lights into Skirsa Street, then take either the second or third turning to the right which both lead onto Tresta Road. The entrance to St. Kentigern's is exactly opposite the top of Fara Street (which you can't see because of the red letters!) and the Western Necropolis/Crematorium is just along the road.

wn = Western Necropolis, sk = St. Kentigern's

Hi there, just want to say I am new here and wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction, how would I go about finding out a number of a buriel of someone buried in St Kentigern's.

Also, probably not the right place to ask, how do I go about finding out about Irish connections, as I have gone back as far as I can and the lady at the geneology office said that Ireland is a bit like a black hole if you don't have much information.
Thank you.
Tricia ???

I have just seen your post and I am willing to try and help you as I am orginally from Ireland.  You don't say what part of Ireland your relatives are from.  I will send you a PM with my email address so you can contact me directly.

All the best for now

Hello MonicaL,

Thank you for your help, all help is gratefully accepted & thankyou for your warm welcome :)

I am wishing I had found this site years ago.

Hi Kieran,

As to your question, my problem is I am not 100% sure as to how to go about finding out where in Ireland I need to look, would I be able to find out when and where they moved to Glasgow from, I am thinking it might have been during the famine, vague I know.

Thank you for offering to help.

Tricia :)

My father drew up the original plan for the plots in St Kent's for his father Francis McGlynn (superintendant).  He would have been interested to see this map, though he is now part of it.
Great post.  Anybody thinking of visiting should check the Mitchell Library as they have the lists for St Kent's.  It will generally give you name, date of death, and age.   Interesting for yong children dying who may not appear on other records.
This was built in the country and my grandfather was buried at the edge, on the hill to avoid the swampy areas.  It now has houses backing on to it.
Note that unlike today these older plots were for 8 bodies not 6.  Many were gifted to the church where there may have been a husband and wife with no children, or they lived further afield.  You may look at the grave with a different name on it although you have a plot number for your relation.  Note that the people buried in others plots were usually on the Poor Law and the Mitchell again has the old Poor Law books with a Computer reference.
                     regards, Dave McGlynn

Very interesting information Dave, thanks.

My paternal grandparents are interred here but not in the same grave. My grandfather died from war wounds whilst home on leave during The Great War, and is buried in a Commonwealth War Grave. (My granny subsequently re-married and is with her 2nd husband).
About 22 years ago I wrote to Glasgow Cemeteries Dept (at that time in the Trongate) asking for details of my grandfather's last resting place, supplying his exact date & place of death, next of kin and parents names. They charged me a fortune (back then) and then told me there was no record of him being there. I then wrote to the War Graves Commission, down in Kent I think (before the era of websites and emails) and got a reply by return of post with the grave and section number, free of charge.

Lodger - if you don't mind me asking, is your grandfather amongst those listed on the Scottish War Graves Project's site?

As you probably know, I've trekked the length & breadth of St. K's to try and find not only the CWGC stones, but the family stones for men and women killed in action etc.

I'd hate to think I'd missed him!

Anne,

There never was a stone at his grave, I've no idea why or what the criteria was to have a stone erected but, he is commemorated on the large memorial in the cemetery. (I discovered that quite by chance).

Oh that's a shame.

As his name is on the 'Screen Wall', it means his grave was in a Common Ground part.

BUT, if you look closely at the photos of the screen wall on SWGP, you'll see each name has a reference beside it. These numbers are the lair numbers, so I would imagine you could find out exactly where he is. St. K's burial records are usually very good and there's a Register of Burials in Common Ground held at the Mitchell Library.

If you like, PM me his name and I can send you a close-up of the name panels (including close-ups of each individual) where you could see the reference more clearly.

Hi Anne,
As I have already mentioned, the CWGC gave me the lair details and I have been to visit the plot which, I can assure you, as I did ask at the time, is not common ground (I wonder how it could be when it was purched by the CWGC?). As for the photographs, I took some about 10 years ago of the memorial (I understand it has since been replaced) so I wouldn't require any more. I seem to remember that there were only about a dozen or so names on the memorial, so I think you must be refering to some other memorial when you talk about a Screen Wall. I haven't been to see that one.

For the Lodger,
† † † There was no criteria for a gravestone.† Like today you had to pay for it and most people would not think of putting one up as they knew where the grave was and visited at the annual mass.
† † † My own grandfather's was a stone that fell off a sarcophagus and his son Charlie who was working there had it engraved for the price of a packet of cigarettes.† †
Try the Church of the Immaculate Conception who may have St Mary's records which may give you more information.  At least they will know where the records are.
† † † † † † † † † † † †Regards, Dave.

This wee photo is the 'Screen Wall' in Section 5. The title 'Screen Wall' is the name CWGC give to these types of memorials.

Thankfully the fir trees around it have been recently cut down.

I meant no offence/disrespect about your grandfather's lair. Many CWGC burials were in Common Ground and even then, the rule about no stones being allowed was upheld.

Next door in Lambhill, there are a good few CWGC stones bearing the inscription 'Known to be buried (elsewhere) in this Cemetery' - these stones have been erected but do not actually mark the graves/lairs as these burials were in common ground, so the stones simply commemorate the person and the place of their burial.

I would get in touch with CWGC and enquire why there was never an individual stone. New/replacement stones are erected all the time due either to maybe an existing family stone toppling/becoming illegible or to new discoveries - i.e. 'non-commemorated' or 'in from the cold' personnel who have been found to have been buried in 'X' location but have previously had an 'unknown' burial location on CWGC's database.

There are two of the above type of stones in St. Kentigerns ......

There is a wee row of CWGC stones which sit behind, and backing onto the screen wall in Section 5.

Two of these are 'Special Memorials' - stones which commemorate, but do not mark the actual graves.

J. Devlin, Royal Artillery is buried in Section 11. Grave 1558 and J. Higgins, Pioneer Corps although buried in Section 5, Lair 1903 this stone is not in that actual 'spot'.

You'll notice the slight difference in wording at the top - Joseph Devlin's says "Known to be buried in this Cemetery" while John Higgins' says "Buried in this Cemetery"

My Great Uncle, William White is also buried at St, Kentigens, so the information from previous postings have been very helpful.  William fell from, his ship, HMS Nereide in dry dock in Glasgow 30th June 1915. I am trying to gather information regarding the circumstances leading to his death. The cause of death is stated as. "killed or died by means other than disease, accident or enemy action" which sounds very confusing. if anyone visits the newspaper archives and find any info I would be most greatfull.  Also my great Aunt Honorah White, who was a Nun ( known as Sister Anthony, died at Poor claires convent laswade rd, Liberton, Edinburgh. However the convent I believe has beeen converted into housing. I wondered if anyone knows whwere the nuns are buried. she died Jan 1959

many thanks

Hi kieran357, I came across your post while doing some family research. My family is Gallagher from Donegal, my auntie is also Gallagher and I am trying to find her brothers grave who she believes was buried in St. kentigerns circa 1950. Any help would be much appreciated, I believe that the Mitchel has recordd of burials for this place at this era. Thamks in advance, Walter.

Hi Gerry,

As you'll know, Section 13 is in 2 parts, one either side of the main road and quite a big area to cover ......

A wee tip I use is to visit the Commonwealth War Graves site and see if I can find any 1st/2nd World War graves as near as I can to what I'm looking for in a particular section.

See: http://www.cwgc.org/search-for-war-dead.aspx?cpage=1&sort=name&order=asc

The above link should take you to the first page for St. Kentigerns and once you get there, go through all the pages and note down all the names and lair numbers for each grave in Section 13. You'll eventually be able to figure out how the numbers run, but it won't be a five minute job once you get there!!

Alternatively, if you can go along Monday-Friday, there's usually either groundsmen around somewhere or there's someone in the wee office beside the crematorium (at the Western Necropolis gate further up the hill). They're usually very helpful but they can be quite hard to find as they work between all 3 cemeteries and you know how huge the area is.

Good luck!

Anne

Hi gerry222, the individual rows all run consecutively however they don't necessarily run in order from row to row. The lairs are laid out at 3 foot centres so you just have to count the gaps in your final tally. What is the lair number? Walter.†

Gerry/Walter,

Lair 1731 will be on the right hand side almost right up at the top (at the end of the back gardens beside the railings)

Have a look here: (The Scottish War Graves Project)
http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=139&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=120&mforum=scottishwargraves

Go to page 9 and scroll down to you reach the photo of the stone of James Patrick Hughes, R.A.F. You'll see the railings in the background of the photo and once you find that stone, you'll be very close.

This is Section 13, Lair 1773, so the one you're looking for will most likely be in the row facing.

Good luck!!

Anne† :)

Hi Gerry, not strange at all and I am more than willing to help. I live a couple of miles from st.kentigerns and I would be happy to show you however I don't know if that is allowed. Having said that it shouldn't be a problem. Enter st. kentigerns at tresta road, the memorial masons portacabin on your right and plan of the cemetery to your front. Go up the road to your left to the first metalled path on your right/opposite the third path on your left(It will make sense on the ground)you are now at the far end of section 13 to the right/section 13 being split in two by the main or central path(Consult the map)Lair 1731 is about 4 double rows from the top of the hill or railings as Anne said earlier, facing up the hill towards the railings. There is a prominent stone cross on the next row up. 4or5 lairs in is the grave of Alexander† Cormack, May 1946, this is marked on the side as 13/1733, next to that are two unmarked lairs, the second being 1731 next to a rotund headstone of Francis P. Mains, Nov 1944. To confirm the numerical direction in which they are laid out, the next numbered lair is, I think McGowan, numbered clearly as 1714. If you pace out the difference, counting from 1714 you will arrive back at the spot previously indicated, or 1731. They are about a pace between at this point in the cemetery. Any further help I can be I will be happy to oblige, I have just found my aunts brothers grave nearby from 1952, they too moved away. Walter.
p.s. I did see the grave Annne mentioned earlier as a spotter to 1731, there are quite a few military graves around there. WW

My dad wanted to find his mums grave as she died when he was 8 (1945) and He and his brothers got scattered to different aunties

We found her records at  the Mitchell library and got lair numbers etc

We went to saint kentigerns today and asked the squad of gravediggers we seen who took us up to the area and we found the lair ,your map was spot on and so were the council boys

The only thing to look out for  when checking recordswas my dad said she was buried in lamb hill and I got the records for there ,it was only after looking at burial grounds in the library that I noticed that st kentigerns was on its own

My old mans now a happy man and is looking into a headstone

hi tricia55, the mitchel library had the records for st kentigerns on microfiche at the beginning of the year. I was looking for a lair myself at that time , (which I have since found) and was told that the records at that time were through in Edinburgh getting digitalised and would be available in that format after easter, now past. Contact cems and crems at Glasgow and give them as much info as you have i.e. full name, date of death, address  :Detc., and they should be able to help you quite quickly. In my experience they are very helpful and only too willing to assist. Walter.

The rolls of microfilm are still kept at the Mitchell Library on the third floor. It's the actual Burial/Lair Owners Registers held by the Archives (2nd Floor) which were taken to be digitised.

The date for release and format seems still to be anybody's guess though!  ::)

In general, the microfilms only go up to the 1950's, so information on more recent burials would have to be sought from Glasgow City Council.

As regards 'Lambhill' ..... although there's 3 cemeteries all sitting side by side (Lambhill, St. Kentigern's and the Western Necropolis), they are commonly referred to 'collectively' as Lambhill as that's the name of the area in which they are located.

Anne  :)

Thanks for the update on the files Anne. It is also possible to get lair/section info for St. kentigerns from the parish records if you know which parish officiated at the burial. Some lairs were even bought on behalf of the parish and given to parishoners who did not have the means. WW.

Hi Natalie,

Yes, there is a section 18 (well, two actually).

I'm afraid I'm the guilty party here and I must apologise for putting the WRONG numbers on 18.

Section 18 is split into 2 parts and sits between the two 13's and the two 20's.

If you click on the map on the first page of this thread and save it to your computer, you should be able to print it out. If however, you intend to visit St. K's, I believe a section map has been erected at the entrance.

The numbers go up to over a thousand in most sections.

The only way to find it is basically to walk up and down each row and see if you can find a number on any of the stones - the number (if there is one) is usually on the base somewhere.

It'll just be a case that when you find some numbered stones, you'll have to try and figure out how the rows run.

Alternatively, if you visit during 'office hours', try the wee office which is at the next entrance up next to the Crematorium in the Western Necropolis. If all else fails, and you can find/see any maintenance men, they are very helpful, unless of course they are attending at a funeral.

Hi again Natalie, just follow  the instructions from AP and you won't go far wrong. There are 3 foot centres between the lairs. Find out what direction the numbers are going and work it out from the nearest confirmed number. They are not all marked. I am up there regularly, I'll have a look for you the next time I'm up. Are you expecting the grave to be marked? any dates? names etc,? WW

That's not uncommon. I'll post before the weekend if I come across anything. The Cems and Crems Dept will mark a grave on request, however I'm not too sure if they charge for this, they didn't used to. Some are easier to find than others. Here's hoping, you may get lucky, Ill be in touch, WW.

Hi Walter,

To upload a photo, you have to make sure it's quite a small file size (500 kb) or it will be rejected.

Simply write your post then click on 'Attachments and other options' and you'll see an 'Attach' option (Choose File).

Click on 'Choose File' and another window will open up with more options and these are asking where your photo is on your computer.

Once you find the photo, click on the 'Open' tab, this will attach it to your post, then click on the usual red 'Post' tab and that's it (hopefully!!).

Turn left here and about 3 or 4 lanes in you will see the following:

Hi again, it's been over 2 hours and nothing heard so here it is in open forum. As you enter the graveyard take the road up to the right, take the first left, cross over the first cross roads and at the next go left at the War Wall Screen. Take the next right, section 6 is now on your left hand side. Stop at the row with the large bush with a large tree just further back up the row. Two of the first few grave stones are clearly numbered 1485 and 1478. This gives you your direction of travel. After about 100M you will come to a double War Grave of Peter Callaghan and John Charters Young. This grave is No. 1434 (Courtesy of Apanderson). Lairs in this section are at 3 feet centres therefore it is just a case of measuring on to locate the centre of 1422, which is within that long green expanse of the row that is unmarked. Good luck, WW.
ps The file size available here is very limited

Post by: apanderson on Wednesday 07 May 14 20:27 BST (UK)
'Fraid not, sorry.

The CWGC stone in the photo below (Jefferson) is Section 10, Lair 560 and it's the closest I can find to Lair 598.

There's no quick way to find a specific lair - you really just have to check each stone for a number and try to figure out which way the lairs run.

You are looking for Lair 598, so if you start at Francis Jefferson's stone, the lair you're looking for will be 38 lairs away. (This could be in the same row, the row behind or the row facing depending on the numbering system)

Each Lair is 3 feet wide, so an option is to take a tape measure and make measurements in increments of three feet, or take something with you which you had pre-measured.

Of course you could go along and there's a stone there with the names you are looking for!!

Anne  :)

Hi, I am just new to the site so please bear with me.

I am trying to find where my grandparents are buried, I have the Section, Lair No and there was a memorial headstone placed, but no matter how long I look I can't find it. Unfortunately as I work I can only go weekends and there is noone there from the Cemetery staff to help.

I have a copy of the Title Deeds as they are detailed as follows:

Reference No. 14W31476
Cert No. 11149
Lair No. 667
Class B
Section 9

I know that Section 9 is split into two part and it also encroaches slightly into Section 10

The headstone was placed approximately June 1981 and the name would be Fitzpatrick

I also know that the lair held three and buried there are Thomas Fitzpatrick my great grandfather, Thomas Murphy my uncle and Joseph Fitzpatrick my grandfather, my grandmothers ashes were scattered there Catherine Fitzpatrick.

The headstone was erected by A. Jaconelli & Sons and the paperwork I have here is dated 09/06/1981

Unfortunately I have found that Section 9 has many headstones that have been damaged and I can only presume that this has happened to my grandparents.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello

I have just joined this forum and hope someone can help.

I'm trying to find the Lair that my grandparents and aunt are buried in at St Kentigerns, Glasgow. I used to visit with my mother who has now passed away and twice my brother and I have been to try and find it with no luck, there are a few damaged stones knocked over in general are and it may be one of those.

I managed to get section and lair number which is section 22, Lair 549, the names on the stone are Mary Hervey (nee Platt), Mary Platt and Francis Platt with dates from 1969 to 1990.

Can anyone tell me how the rows etc work as it seems to be 2 big sections according to the map and I really want to find it this time so we can get it repaired and cleaned up.

Many thanks
Fiona

Fiona, my parents are in Section 20 lair no 1356  My dad died August 1967 and the person to the right of him is september 1967. I will be at the cemetery over the weekend and will have a look for you. If you look on a stone already placed there should be a number and that is the lair number you could possibly work it out from there.  You could always call the cemetery and give them the details and ask them to place a marker, I did this with my grandparents recently, I told them I had searched for months and couldn't find it (the stone had fallen over) and they called me back and told me they had  placed the stone upright and once I found it I replaced the broken headstone.  I have the cemetery managers mobile number but don;t want to put it on the public forum.

Hello Carol

if you would be able to have a quick look that would be very kind of you and much appreciated, my brother lives abroad and we have spent a good 6 hours at least searching on 2 occasions in what we thought was the area and came to the conclusion the stone was lying face down.

We really want to find it so we can look after it as there is no one else left in the family to do it and my Mum would have wanted that.

I managed to find the lair number by going through the Mitchell library with the little information I had as could not remember dates and have no death certificates and they were very helpful.

If you have any luck please let me know and if not I'll try and get that number off you to call the cemetery.

Kind regards
Fiona

Hi to all you people interested in St Kentigern's. I found this thread purely by chance.I don't know why I haven't tried to find family graves in Glasgow before, I just assumed it would be a difficult task. So I visited The Mitchell this week on a whim and within 20 minutes of using their microfilm records found four family members in two graves in St Kentigern's.
I have section 2 lair 1471 and section 6 lair 2167. The family name is McElhinney.

I asked about the lair registers and was told that they are still in Edinburgh for digitisation. I note in this thread a similar comment from four years ago! I was also advised that for a fee of about £10 I can ask for the info I'm seeking but it could take up to 8 weeks for a reply. I'll pass.

Today I visited the cemetery for the first time (I've recently moved to the Maryhill area, so I'm close by). I doubt if there will be any headstones so this visit was more to get an idea of the look of the place. I have copy of the Glasgow City Council's cemetery map from the Mitchell's Family History website. I've noticed a slight difference between this and the one originally added to this thread. The council's map shows part of section 2 next to section 13, whereas the other shows this part as section 12. Could someone check for me please?

I didn't find the grave locations and trying to find the numbers on those stones still existing was not easy. I'd be grateful for any advice otherwise I'll visit another time when there might be staff around.
Denis

Hi
I am looking for any help as to find a grave in St Kentigern's section 12. L 256 either B or C can't make it out .  Does anyone know if this section has a lot of headstones as I have no idea how to find it. I would really luv to get a headstone if not.  I have a map of the section but unsure how big it is.  Here would lay my great grandmother Rose who died in 1942 and my my uncle John at 3 days and a cousin Robert of 6 months.  With 9 siblings i think it was whoever had space and family scattered all over the place.  I would really appreciate any help or advice.  Many thanks
Joanne

The Family History section in the Mitchell Library has the burials for St Kentigern's.  Assuming you know a date of death you can visibly examine the records which are in date order and look through the days after the death.   That will give you the lair number and location.

The sections are not too large, but many headstones are missing.   You could contact the staff at the cemetery office.   They will be able to establish the exact location of the lair.   I did this myself some years ago and made an appointment to go up and a staff member took me to the lair.  Unfortunately, in my case, no headstone.

Hope this helps.

Here is a map showing the sections.   If you are their during the week you can ask cemetery staff who may be able to help locate the lair.  If not go to the section and look at some headstones where you should find a lair reference enscribed on the side or edge

Hope that helps

Following some help I received via this thread I accessed the non indexed images on line at FamilySearch.   Most records for St Kentigern's are available, but there are four films not yet uploaded online.    I have made a request via FS for these to be scanned and put online.  No guarantee it will happen tho I cannot see copyright or privacy being an issue as more recent records are already available on FS.   If they appear I will post on here.

Requested records :-
Daily interment books, 1882-July 1909, British Film 1574797
Daily interment books, July 1909-March 1926, British Film 1574798
Daily interment books, March 1926-September 1943, British Film, 1574799
Daily interment books, September 1943-July 1967, British Film, 1574805

You are very welcome.  Since I replied to your earlier post I found a lot of info for St Kentigerns on FamilySearch.   See my posts on p 16 of this thread.  If you have a date of death you should be able to find it on those records.  If you give me a name and date I can have a quick look .

Hi,
The records are not indexed so there is no search facility as such.  However, if you have a date, or even a year for a death it's actually quite easy to locate.   Simply study the description of each film in the catalog summary  here https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/1321853?availability=Family%20History%20Library and determine which film it will be on.   Some films are daily burial records and some are Lair registers that show all burials in that lair.  Start with the daily interments.   If you view the film using the "multiple image " option ( at left hand side of page ),  you will see occasional black separators, these give the contents of the following section of the film which is usually split into groups of years, so you can quickly jump through say 50 / 100 pages at a time to find the section and locate the year and the record within the year.  They are in chronological order.     Remember these are BURIAL dates, so you need to check a few days beyond the date of death or even more.  For example, I had an uncle killed in action in WW2, so it was 4 weeks later before his body was repatriated for burial.

Sorry if that seems like "teaching granny to suck eggs ".      Hope it helps, but if you get stuck PM me and I'll see if I can help.
