Title: Percy Pryke Woodbridge
Post by: ajf25 on Wednesday 09 February 11 01:29 GMT (UK)
I'm after any information on Percy Pryke Woodbridge.

I'm not sure if this should be on the USA or the Canada board as he seems to be present in both countries at various times.

He was born in 1887 Abingdon, Berkshire, England to parents Charles and Elizabeth (nee Dines).

He left Liverpool, ENG on 11 Mar 1909, bound for Saint John, NB, Canada on board the Tunisian.

I have found a couple of online snippets about him in books.

Percy P. Woodbridge is the well known efficient secretary of the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce, which position he has held since 1924.  Mr Woodbridge is a native of England.  He was born in the famous old city of Oxford on February 18, 1887.  His father, Charles Woodbridge, also a native of Oxford was a farmer, miller and grain merchant.  He died in 1904 at the age of 57 years.  The mother, Elizabeth (Dines) Woodbridge was born in......

Ref:  Historic Michigan, Land of the Great Lakes, Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society, Michigan Historical Commission 1928.

Everything in the snippet about England is true other than the Oxford birthplaces.  Both father and son were born in Abingdon, Berkshire.

He is mentioned in other snippets from books relating to Calgary, CAN and perhaps agriculture (not enough to go on)

Is anyone able to find out any more information about Percy?  Who he married (if he did), children etc.  Anything would be great.

Thanks
Alison  ;D

Two different ships confuse me a bit.  I've found Percy coming on the Tunisian and Mary coming on the Corsican with her family. My information is from FindMyPast, so perhaps there were two and one is not recorded there  ???

Uncle R J Edwards. 304 Burns Avenue. Hamilton. Ontario.

R J would be Mary's brother Richard J, who travelled with her and the rest of the family in 1908.

Thank you Sandra,
this information is wonderful,

I've just looked at a map, and Abingdon and Oxford are actually only about 10km apart!!!

Percy also appears to have a brother in Canada - Charles Edward Woodbridge

Yes also born in Abingdon, with birth registered in June qtr 1874.

It's interesting that they emigrated.  Their father seems to have been fairly successful, but the children have scattered.  Two siblings (that I know of so far) have ended up in Derby in 1891.  You'd have to wonder why.  Were things bad at home, or were they encouraged to travel?  We can only guess.

If you have'nt got this far, this may give something to work with - hope it helps.  ;)

The Woodbridge line it appears is traceable back to John Woodbridge 1645 - 1713 and Judeth Pitcher.

John Woodbridge Birth 1680 - 1738  in Towersey, Oxfordshire, England  and Mary Parker.

John Woodbridge 1702 - 1755 and Ann Pepper

Joseph Woodbridge 1729 -1795 and Elizabeth Jacob/ Sarah Frranklin/Mary Free

Jacob Woodbridge 1771 - 1819 and Elizabeth Reeves

Thomas Woodbridge 1796 - 1850 and Elizabeth Liddall

Charles W Woodbridge 1817 - 1882 and Ann Quarrell

Charles W Woodbridge 1842 - 1905 and Elizabeth Dines.

John Wilcox Edwards (father of Mary Gwendoline Edwards) was the son of Richard Edwards 1814 -1865 and  Martha Wilcox (his second wife -  (which is where the Wilcox middle name originated)   Sarah Jones was the first wife

Hi Sandra,

I hadn't gone back with the Woodbridges past Charles-Ann Quarrell.  Ann was my gg grandmother's sister.  I've no idea what that makes her to me.  I get very confused.

I'll add the Woodbridge lineage to my information and follow up later.

Thanks for adding "some flesh to the bones".

Thank you
