trying to work out the location of 498 Edge Lane, West Derby
1891 census has a "beerhouse" at 490 and "Edge Lane Hotel" at 492
in the other direction a "beerhouse" at 522 and "Kimberlay Arms" at 532
any offers?
thanks!
;)

I you can find Douro Place on Google maps then it would be a bit to the left of that. Numbers 520 and 522 were on the corners of Douro Place.
498 was between Fletcher Grove and Derby Place which don't seem to exist anymore

thanks for that - appears to be a retail park now?

This looks like the final demolition taking place!

That's a shame plimmerian. I'm sure the old buildings would have been preferable to whatever they are constructing there now. :(
-
great to see the side by side view - didn't know you could do that - and the terrace block appears to be called "North View" on the old maps site!
Thank you.

Oh great! A car park. ::)
Yes, the side by side maps are excellent. If they line up properly (some seem to be better than others) you can even use your mouse to trace outlines of buildings, roads etc which can be very handy when buildings have been removed or extended.
Sorry I messed up the link to Old Maps in my previous post - Stan's is a better one anyway.

If you go to https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=18&lat=53.4098&lon=-2.9240&layers=168&b=1
in the bottom left you will see "Change transparency of overlay:" and a blue button, moving this to the left overlays the old map with the modern view.

thank you for the tips! ;D

The City of Liverpool Licensing Report Book, 1909, has The Edge Lane Hotel at 492, Thos Middleton, manager for owners Mounsey and Glendenning, one room licensed on ground floor for Music and Singing. Billiard room, one table, on first floor. There is more on the other addresses if you want it.

Thanks for that top tip Stan, very useful! I have used the side by side maps many times but didn't know about the overlay.
Every day's a school day on Rootschat ;D

You probably have enough to locate the building you wanted but for the record, 522 Edge Lane was Crown Vaults, and 532 was Kimberley Arms, both Peter Walker & Sons tenanted pubs.
