Hi, I am researching the Waters family who stayed in Uphall, West Lothian from 1880. Peter being the head of the family and his wife Isabelle who was origionally from Sligo , Ireland. Can anyone helpme please???

Don't have any more details. Parents Peter Waters and Isabella Walker.

Ev, I was seeing those parents also, which is why on checking on IGI, it brought up these births:

2. MARY MARGARET WALKER Birth: 22 JAN 1862 Lower Cumber, Londonderry
3. ISABELLA WALKER Birth: 04 NOV 1863 Lower Cumber, Londonderry
4. MAJOR WALKER Birth: 28 AUG 1865 Lower Cumber, Londonderry
5. ELIZA JANE WALKER Birth: 09 APR 1868 Lower Cumber, Londonderry
6. CATHERINE WALKER Birth: 14 AUG 1869 Uphall, West Lothian
7. GEORGE WALKER Birth: 11 DEC 1870 Uphall, West Lothian

The Scottish birth certficates will let you confirm place and date of parents marriage in Ireland :)

not too sure about peter waters , 1881 has his birth as blackrigg berwick

I struggled with Peter Waters also Ev. There was a possible entry for him in Berwickshire in one of the earlier censuses that I looked at last night but, as you say, nothing on IGI showing for a birth.
Perhaps miao if you decide to look at the marriage cert that Ev found for Peter and Isabella, we can be more certain of what we are looking for with his parents' names to help in the searches :)

From IGI births, I think mother Mary's maiden name looks to be Boyce which fits with the surname for the niece.

had a look at 1861 census on maxwellancestry which is as you have it but
the address might be a better transcription(maybe)

i can see this on the map and a whiterig is nearby but can't see blackrigg

Hi MonicaLesl, a Family relative told me that Isabella was born in Sligo but your info seems a little more believeable. Will be back in touch soon. Going to do a little more research on the Walker side of the family.

Hi Monica, Isabella Walker was born in Ireland in 1864 along with her twin sister Mary and her brother James Alexander Walker born 19/07/1860. She hd a sister Catherine born 14/08/1869 and a brother George born Jan 1871 in Broxburn, West Lothian, Scotland. Peter Waters was born 1870 in Berwickshire. Hope this helps.

Dates seem out here :-\ Peter, father, looks to have been born c. 1861 (although Ev and I haven't been able to find his birth entry but we do have possible census entries for him). Have you looked at the 1883 marriage? Have you managed to confirm his parents' names?
Mary and Isabella don't look to have been twins :-\ Is this from the family's 1871 entry where Mary and Isabella show as aged 9? You have the birth regs. from Ireland with Mary's birth in 1862 and Isabella's in 1863.

Hi Monica, I have had a look at the Marriage cert and con confirm that they married 4/12/1883. Peters' parents were Peter Wates and Henrietta Stewart. Thanx for your help. :)

P.S.Isabella's parents were Major Walker and Mary Devine. A family relative told me that they were twins but don't know where he got his info from.

That's great that you have able to verify :) Your relative I think probably was working from the 1871 census where both Mary and Isabella shows as aged 9, prior to finding the girls' births in Ireland.
The Walker side seems a lot more straightforward, at least in respect of her parents and siblings. It's the Waters side that is still causing problems. There are only about 4 Peter Waters in the whole of Scotland old enough to be your Peter's father in the 1861 census and with one Peter and family living in Berwickshire, you would think this would be his family. The two problems we are having:
- we cannot find his birth on SP or IGI to let you verify this details
- whilst we can potential parents Peter Waters and Ann Boyce for him, his marriage entry that you have confirmed show mother as Henrietta Stewart. Two options here, either he made a mistake with mother's name (she would have died when he was relatively young given it is likely from the census entries we have potentially found, that his father remarried by the time of the 1871 census) or, we have the wrong family for him in the Berwickshire family that later moved to West Lothian. The problem is we are not seeing anything else for him :-\

Hi Monica, I have just found death cert for Peter Waters. He died 12/08/1932 aged 67 yrs so he must have been Born around 1865. Peter died in Broxburn, West Lothian, Scotland. His parents are named as Peter Waters (Dairyman) and Ann Waters m.s. Boyce ;D The Waters family research is, as you say, confusing :-\

Hurray ;D Confirmation we do have the right census entries for him in 1871 and his family before his birth in 1861.
As to his birth entry, who knows how this has been indexed :-\
Don't worry too much about the varying ages for him. So far we have:
1871 - aged 10, born c. 1861
1881 - aged 18, born c. 1863
1891 - aged 28, born c. 1863
1901 - aged 38, born c. 1863
And now his death with an approximate age at death giving a birth year of c. 1865.
It's there or there abouts!
Pity we cannot confirm as yet with his birth entry.

Monica, with regards to an earlier message from you about 1861 census and 1871 census. Could it be poss that Peter snr was married 3 times :o as you mentioned a Martha Galloway. We know that from Peter's marriage cert his mother is named as Henrietta Stewart and on his death cert his mother is named as Ann Boyce. :-\ :-\

Not sure what to suggest regarding the Waters side. These are the two birth showing on IGI for a Peter Waters and Ann Boyce:
1. HANNAH WATTERS Birth: 01 APR 1860 Mordington, Berwick
2. ANN WATTERS Birth: 04 FEB 1865 Cockburnspath, Berwick
Your Peter's birth would I think fit in between these dates above. You might want to check the 1865 birth for Ann as this should include date and place for parents' marriage.
I can't find a death cert for Ann Boyce/Waters on SP though to confirm dates though.
These are the children showing on IGI for a Peter Waters and Martha Gallagher:
1. WILLIAM WATERS Birth: 16 APR 1870 Livingston, West Lothian
2. THOMAS WATERS Birth: 17 OCT 1872 Livingston, West Lothian
Again, either of these birth certs would include parents' marriage details - there is a marriage showing on SP in 1869 for a Martha Gallacher and Peter Waters which might be theirs.

hi just started on this site still trying to find my way. I hope i have contacted the correct person only i noticed you had done some previous research on the waters family living in uphall? my ggggg grandfather was peter waters born approx 1820 in ireland, his son was peter waters born approx 1865 @ cockburnspath,berwickshire. I know peter senior married martha gallacher in 1869@ bathgate (his first wife, ann died in childbirth 1865 @ coldingham). Peters 2nd wife signs her mothers death certificate in 1876 and then after that they appear to vanish off the face of the earth? Would like to try to find out whereabouts in ireland peter came from (our family stories suggest waterford & peter & ann were married in may 1853 in donegal) & would love to know where they dissapeared to & why?! Family have suggested they went to america / canada ? sorry if all this info means nothing to you, i know its a bit of a long shot. Thanks

Peter jnr( ggrandfather) was born 1870 in Eaton, Berwickshire and died 12/08/1932 @ 25, Mid Street, Broxburn, Scotland. He married Isabella Walker on 04/12/1883 @ The Huts, Broxburn. They had 13 children.
Mary Waters born 03/12/1881 @ The Huts, Broxburn. Mary was illigitimate.
James Waters born 14/05/1884 @ The Huts, Broxburn.
Major Walker Waters born 09/11/1886 @ Bedlington U.S.D. Morpeth, Northumberland. Major was my husbands Grandfather.

Hi, New to this so not sure what I am doing yet. My gg grandfather was Peter Waters b 1834 in Donegal and married to Ann Boyce.
I am decended from his first child with Ann, who was Mary Waters b 1855 in Donegal. Peter and Ann came to Bastleridge farm, Ayton, Berwickshire to work about 1858 with their two children Mary and James b1857. I have a photo of the now dilapidated farm cottage that they lived in at Ayton if you are interested.
