New at this, so be patient. Have been tracing my family tree, but come to a standstill on my fathers welsh side. Quite normal I suppose with those surnames! My father David Noir Thomas was born in tumble, llanelli and stayed there until he married and moved to Dorset. His mother was Margaret(nee Lewis born 1908 ) and married Harold Francis. Previous to that she was married to Joseph Thomas born 1908 .My grandmother margaret ( everyone called her 'mag' in Tumble) ran a shop with her 2nd husband harold in Bethester road. I know she came from a family of bakers and my grandfather joseph was from a mining family. Have his fathers name as Hugh w Thomas on his wedding certificate and my grandmothers father was called william. wouls like to know if anyone should remember the family and could help me find out their mothers names. Worth a try I suppose as it was a small village!! many thanks

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
As Margaret and Joseph were both born in 1908 - have you checked for them on the 1911 census which is pay per view only
http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

Yes, Spent £10 on Genes Reunited with no luck!
-
Margaret had a middle christian name - what was it?
Marriages June qtr 1930
Margaret A Lewis Carmarthen 11a 2460
Joseph Thomas Carmarthen 11a 2460
When she married Harold Francis in 1952 - she is again shown as Margaret A
What year did she die and was it in Llanelly Dyfed?
There is a Margaret Ann Francis death in the June qtr 1979 and her birthdate is shown as 16.11.1908
-
Her middle name was ann. She died june 9th 1979. in Carmarthen. She married on june 10th 1930. Thanks for repying. Am a member of ancestry .co.uk, and have her marriage certificate. There are no living relatives left to ask, and my mum cant remember much.
-
With a surname like Lewis in Wales - middle names can be a godsend. This is probably her birth reg
Births December qtr 1908
Margaret Anne Lewis Carmarthen 11a 1298
-
No idea what the Genes version of 1911 is like, but the one Carole gave the link to above is very adaptable if you use the advanced search. Try searching for Margaret Lewis born 1909 (she was born late in 1908) living in Carmarthenshire, registration district Llanelly with William as the first name of someone else in the household.
the birth reg in 1908 looks very likely...
-
The free 1911 index shows a Margaret Ann Lewis aged 2 living in Llanelly Carmarthenshire
It matches to a William Lewis in the same household
Follow the instructions below
USING THE FREE 1911 INDEX TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT HOUSEHOLD
http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx
Once you find a possible match - make a note of the county and district in which the person was living
Return to the index and in PERSONAL DETAILS - just put the surname of the family - nothing else
In LOCATION - Select the county and below it - type in the district
In OTHER MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD - show the full name of the person you have found on the index
Click SEARCH
You will have to buy credits to view the full entry - the above instructions will only help to possibly show others of the same name in the same household

I think the birth reg in dec qtr is likely too, so have ordered the copy. Hoping to find out her mothers maiden name so I can go a bit further ( hope its not Thomas tho! Lol!!) Thanks for the help everyone . Still stuck on Joseph! The prob with the welsh( no offfence) is they very often switched their first names around. ( I know my dad and his brother did) so sometimes you are looking for the wrong christian names!
-
Got the copy of my grandmothers birth certificate today. Mothers Surname was........Davies!! Another needle in a haystack. Never mind, I will keep searching. Lol!! ???
-
Was her mother Ann Davies?
Marriages December qtr 1907
Anne Davies Carmarthen 11a 2214
William Lewis
-
Yes it was. Blimey you are good at this. Ive been seaching all night!! Thankyou so much : :D
-
At a standstill again. Cant make out who was married before, my Greatgrandmother or Greatgrandfather! Will push on with the thomas side now, though not sure which Joseph Thomas it is. On the website where you pay to view, can you see the original document or does it just show the entry qtr etc.?

Do you mean the 1911 census?
10 credits gets you a transcription of the image which you can print and 30 credits gets you the original image completed by your ancestor which you can download to your pc and print off
-
no sorry. Didnt explain that very well. I mean on the birth certificates. Or do I need to order the original? Its just that there are quite a few Joseph Thomas' and I dont want to order the wrong one. I know his fathers name was Hugh w Thomas, but that obviously doesnt show up on the one you can look at free.
-
Members of the public do not have access to birth certificates - what you see for free online are christening entries or the reference on freebmd to enable purchase of a copy
The free 1911 index has only 3 entries for a Joseph Thomas with a father Hugh
2 had middle christian names and just one was Joseph aged 3 living in Pontypridd
There is a 1906 marriage for a Hugh Wathen Thomas in Lampeter but using the 1911 formula shown above does not show a Joseph Thomas in the same household
-
Thankyou, at least that gives me more to go on

Thanks- I did wonder if it was that one, but on the marriage cert. it states there is only 5 yrs between them?
-
ignore that last comment- just realised i was looking at William and Ann , and not John and ann!
-
What does Cilai uchaf mean, and is this a place in Llandarogg?
-
I think Cilai Uchaf is the name of the farm, in the hamlet of Cilai, Llanddarog.
Uchaf means Upper or Higher. Cilai is from "Cil" meaning 'corner, angle; retreat, recess, nook; river source'
