Title: 1707 Undecipherable Word
Post by: david64 on Friday 25 February 11 19:11 GMT (UK)
Evening,

I have the below inventory with an undecipherable word. My transcription is:

Impr[im]is two oxen - 06:00:00
Three {unreadable} - 06:00:00
One other cow - 01:10x:00

As usual thanks to anyone who can spare a few seconds.

I think the word is "kine", meaning cows. I don't understand why there should be another cow which is not included in "kine", though.

I have just thought that perhaps the 3 kine were each more valuable than the other cow and the barren cow, so listed separately.

Is the "other cow" valued at less than a third of the value of the 3 kine? I would expect the barren cow also to be less valuable.

Before I saw Roger's reply, I read the missing word as kine.

My interpretation, as a former cow keeper, for what it's worth ::)

two Oxen (draught cattle for pulling ploughs, carts, etc)
three Kine (any type of cattle but in this context I suspect it may mean milking cows)
one other Cow (possibly an older cow, hence lower value)
one barren Cow (neither producing milk nor carrying a calf)
three Bullocks (castrated male cattle for beef)
